Our great room soars 33' with a stone fireplace and looks out on the mountains. Wrap around porches with rocking chairs and a hammock await you. Curl up with a book, watch hummingbirds feed in our extensive gardens, or visit with friends and family. From every angle, you'll enjoy great views of sunrises, sunsets, and starry-skies.

The first floor is handicap accessible via a ramp from the driveway--not ADA compliant.
After years of living near DC, we were ready to get back to the quiet of the countryside--even if it wasn't full time. We also wanted our son to know the pleasures of a country community---the immense freedom and pleasures of the woods and fields.
Samantha Guerry purchased this chateau / country house in 1994
We fell in love with this valley over 23 years ago when we came to Graves Mt. Lodge for a weekend. We found this property in 1992 and designed our dream house to go with it. We've created the gardens up and sense of place out of our vision of the ideal country life.
Our home is only 90miles from DC--a short and mostly beautiful 1.75 hr drive--also only 35 miles from Charlottesville/UVA.
It's just close enough to be satisfying for an overnight and just long enough to feel a LOT further away. This is a place you can really get away from it all! (BTW, cells phones don't work here--but we do have wifi for texting/email.)
Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Old Rag Mt Lodge over the Thanksgiving weekend! The home is beautiful, clean, well-stocked, and we enjoyed the added bonus of being able to go collect eggs every morning which led to great breakfasts. The local caretaker was extremely helpful throughout our stay, even calling to check on us when the power went out and home switched over for a brief period to generator.
The home is very close to many hiking options and we hiked White Oak Canyon and Old Rag. We also took a walk down to the community pond and up the road to the top for local walks. Some of our group also did the horseback riding half day trail ride offered nearby at Graves Mountain Lodge and it was a beautiful ride, crossing a few streams and going up along ridges with amazing views.
We hope to book a return trip to this special place! Everything from booking the house through our departure was easily handled.
I surprised my husband with a 40th bday boys' weekend near his favorite hike, Old Rag. My husband and his friends LOVED the place. They loved sitting by the fire, hanging out and listening to music. They enjoyed getting fresh eggs and grilling out. And they really enjoyed hiking! It was so easy to reserve and get into the place and we knew exactly what to do with great welcome directions. Thanks again!
Oh my goodness....what a great vacation! The house is every bit as beautiful as it looks in the pictures (even more so)! We hosted a family reunion while there, and the layout was just perfect for socializing...There are great decks, a huge porch and lots of outdoor seating areas. And then there is Connie....She was our welcome committee, our concierge and just a tremendous help overall. THANK YOU for a fantastic time!
I loved every second! It was so nice, quite and relaxing!! The perfect stress free getaway. I will be staying here again. The owners and caretaker are absolutely wonderful.
The experience was wonderful - very quiet and peaceful. Loved the Chickens and the Ducks that ran around the grounds. Was great to be able to go and check the chickens for eggs which made a great breakfast. Even though cell services was not existent and Internet was spotty it was probably for the best as you leave the outside world just relax. The amenities were exceptional and the care taker was great checking in from time to time to make sure that everything was ok or if had any needs.
They did have a pond but its not kept up very well, said we can fish but did not try and define toy can not swim.
Overall a Wonderful trip.
This is our 3rd time staying at Old Rag Mt Lodge. It is always a relaxing and fun weekend, and this time was no different. Hiking, biking, swimming, cooking, and even getting our own fresh eggs from the hen house. So fun! Can't wait to return!
When the road ends, adventure begins! Drive, bike or ride a short way west on any road in our valley and you will be in the Shenandoah National Park. Hike Old Rag Mountain or White Oak Canyon. Cool off in local waterfalls. Fish the beautiful heritage waters of the Robinson and Rose Rivers---or take your little ones to the stocked trout pond to let them catch some dinner.
If you just want to relax, you can curl up in our hammock for that overdue nap, take a swim in our community lake (just a short walk down the hill) or just pass the day on a raft reading and counting the hawks that fly overhead.
Our valley is home to the Graves Mountain Lodge, which hosts the nationally known Annual BlueGrass Festival, the autumn Apple Festivals, and many other wonderful events. If you don't feel like cooking, just drop in at Graves for a homestyle meal served family style in their lodge overlooking the mountains.
If you love horses, you can join a ride out of their stable or board your own horses in their stable space right at the foot of our hill. There are hundreds of miles of trails through fields and forests--you can go all the way to Skyline Drive from here.
For cyclists, our backroads are some of the most beautiful and least traveled in the region and the Double Top Wilderness area has lots of great mountain bike trails to take in as well.
So much to do in every season!
