About Samantha Guerry
After years of living near DC, we were ready to get back to the quiet of the countryside--even if it wasn't full time. We also wanted our son to know the pleasures of a country community---the immense freedom and pleasures of the woods and fields.
Samantha Guerry purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1994
Why Samantha Guerry chose Madison
We fell in love with this valley over 30 years ago when we came to Graves Mt. Lodge for a weekend. We found this property in 1992 and designed our dream house to go with it. We've created the gardens up and sense of place out of our vision of the ideal country life.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
Our home is only 90miles from DC--a short and mostly beautiful 1.75 hr drive--also only 35 miles from Charlottesville/UVA. It's just close enough to be satisfying for an overnight and just long enough to feel a LOT further away. This is a place you can really get away from it all! (BTW, cells phones don't work here--but we do have wifi for texting/email.)

This home is beautiful! My whole family said we would like to tear our house down and build a replica of your home on our lot! But the one thing that we couldn’t have is the amazing view!
We enjoy gathering eggs, Star and moon gazing while in the hot tub, preparing meals in this fantastic kitchen, gathering in the beautiful great room to read and relax after a great hike.
We loved how close white oak canyon and old rag were as well!
Thanks so much for sharing this special place with our family! We have all said this week how nice it would be to practice social distancing from your home rather than ours!
Thank you Tammy! Your note makes us so happy! It’s such a joy to share our special place with kindred spirits like you. We hope you’ll come back for more when the world gets back on its feet. Meanwhile, we wish all of you safe passage during the difficult time.
A wonderful respite from real life
This was a perfect, charming choice for our group of girlfriends for four days. We loved the setting with so many hiking trails and quiet roads nearby. The house was well-stocked with games, books and kitchen supplies - we way overdid it on our own packing. It was so quiet at night you couldn’t hear a thing (a welcome alternative for moms with young kids at home!) and the stars were beautiful. No problems with check-in, maintenance or anything else during our stay, it was all as described. One note: While the house says it sleeps 8, it really sleeps 6 adults comfortably (and that was great for us!). We would love to return.
Weekend in the Madison County Woods
Great experience and enjoyed our time in the woods at this wonderful home.
Fantastic country retreat
Beautiful house and property. Extremely well appointed. Kids thoroughly enjoyed the stay -even without a TV!
Convenient to several great hikes, fly fishing or just exploring the local area and small towns.
Excellent host and caretakers.
Relaxing and Comfortable
The interior of the home is very calming; the presence of chickens, ducks and geese make for great omelets in the morning; and the yard is nice to walk around in.
When the road ends, adventure begins! Drive, bike or ride a short way west on any road in our valley and you will be in the Shenandoah National Park. Hike Old Rag Mountain or White Oak Canyon. Cool off in local waterfalls. Fish the beautiful heritage waters of the Robinson and Rose Rivers---or take your little ones to the stocked trout pond to let them catch some dinner.
If you just want to relax, you can curl up in our hammock for that overdue nap, take a swim in our community lake (just a short walk down the hill) or just pass the day on a raft reading and counting the hawks that fly overhead.
Our valley is home to the Graves Mountain Lodge, which hosts the nationally known Annual BlueGrass Festival, the autumn Apple Festivals, and many other wonderful events. If you don't feel like cooking, just drop in at Graves for a homestyle meal served family style in their lodge overlooking the mountains.
If you love horses, you can join a ride out of their stable or board your own horses in their stable space right at the foot of our hill. There are hundreds of miles of trails through fields and forests--you can go all the way to Skyline Drive from here.
For cyclists, our backroads are some of the most beautiful and least traveled in the region and the Double Top Wilderness area has lots of great mountain bike trails to take in as well.
So much to do in every season!
