About Samantha Guerry
After years of living near DC, we were ready to get back to the quiet of the countryside--even if it wasn't full time. We also wanted our son to know the pleasures of a country community---the immense freedom and pleasures of the woods and fields.
Samantha Guerry purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1994
Why Samantha Guerry chose Syria
We fell in love with this valley over 23 years ago when we came to Graves Mt. Lodge for a weekend. We found this property in 1992 and designed our dream house to go with it. We've created the gardens up and sense of place out of our vision of the ideal country life.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
Our home is only 90miles from DC--a short and mostly beautiful 1.75 hr drive--also only 35 miles from Charlottesville/UVA. It's just close enough to be satisfying for an overnight and just long enough to feel a LOT further away. This is a place you can really get away from it all! (BTW, cells phones don't work here--but we do have wifi for texting/email.)

Comfortable Lodge Away From It All
My sons and I had an unforgettable holiday at the lodge that was so much more than expected. We enjoyed all the comforts of home and visited with the chickens daily and enjoyed fresh egg breakfasts. We spent time walking to the pond and local store and also had day trips to nearby National Park and Charlottesville. There’s also a wonderful pizza place in nearby Madison. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.
Great escape to the country
This home in Syria was the retreat away from the city my friends and I were looking for. We spent a half day doing a day hike around Syria and saw some waterfalls. We spent a full day doing the more difficult hike up Old Rag Mountain. Old Rag Mountain was better than expected, amazing views and great bouldering.
This lodge was a perfect retreat after a long day of hiking. Between the nice appointments, great music and sound system, outdoor space, hot tub, and fresh eggs we were refreshed.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful home with us.
This property and hospitality exceeded our expectations.
The photos do not do into justice. The decking and atmosphere are charming, and the kitchen was well equipped. We were sad that the hot tub wasn’t working but enjoyed our stay immensely. We felt like family at this property and hope to visit again soon.
A wonderful weekend away!
What a great place to stay! We took a long weekend at Samantha's home and enjoyed every minute of it! It had a very warm and welcoming feeling right when we stepped in the door! The "operating instructions" and recommendations for the area that Samantha provided were very helpful during packing/planning and once we got there. Our group had 4 adults and 3 children (5 & under) and the house was a great space for playing and hanging out. We had all four seasons in one weekend so we took advantage of a variety of opportunities. Connie was very kind - she called to check and make sure we arrived and to see if we needed anything while we were there. We took advantage of the opportunity to use the certificate they gave us and visit the winery at the bottom of the hill (the kids were welcome) when we weren't snuggled up in the house or hanging out on the porch. The kitchen was large with tons of supplies and the seating area had plenty of space for all of us. The Great Room was beautiful and we loved having fires (firewood was provided), looking out the huge windows and relaxing (note: there is no TV here). It was very convenient that I was able to take the mattress from the "window bed" in the kids' room and put it on the floor so that my 2.5 year old could sleep safely with the other two kids. The kitchen, bathrooms and common area were all very well stocked. They were apologetic that the hot tub was not working when we were there (due to recent extreme cold weather). However, we were able to use the grill (no need to bring your own supplies) and collect the chicken eggs for meals which was fun. The large grassy area in front of the house was great for the kids to kick a ball around when it was sunny and collect snow for snowballs after the snow! Overall, we had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend staying at this Mountain gem! Thanks Samantha!
So happy you had a great stay! It's rare to get snow, so that was special. Hope you'll come back to stay with us again. Thank you for letting us know about your stay. We appreciate it! (PS For future renters, hot tub is up and running! The severe cold in February just got the better of it.)
Absolutly lovely weekend
This is a beautiful home in a great location. We (a group of 5 adults and an infant) had a fantastic time. The kitchen was so well stocked, we didn’t want for a thing - the fresh eggs were an additional bonus! We visited the local vineyards as well as James Madison's Montpelier – I would definitely come back. I can only imagine how great this house would be in the warmer weather.
So glad you had a wonderful time! Hope you'll come back in the warm weather and enjoy all the things our valley and mountains offer. Thanks for coming!
Lovely, wooded, peaceful setting for our group to do winery touring.
Our group of 6 adults enjoyed this peaceful setting in the woods after each day of touring local wineries! We had one in the group in a motorized wheelchair and the downstairs bedroom and bath were set up to be accessible. Was really handicapped! Lots of places say they are but not to the extent of the needs for a person confined to a wheelchair.
Connie, the caretaker, was a great help if we had any issues.
When the road ends, adventure begins! Drive, bike or ride a short way west on any road in our valley and you will be in the Shenandoah National Park. Hike Old Rag Mountain or White Oak Canyon. Cool off in local waterfalls. Fish the beautiful heritage waters of the Robinson and Rose Rivers---or take your little ones to the stocked trout pond to let them catch some dinner.
If you just want to relax, you can curl up in our hammock for that overdue nap, take a swim in our community lake (just a short walk down the hill) or just pass the day on a raft reading and counting the hawks that fly overhead.
Our valley is home to the Graves Mountain Lodge, which hosts the nationally known Annual BlueGrass Festival, the autumn Apple Festivals, and many other wonderful events. If you don't feel like cooking, just drop in at Graves for a homestyle meal served family style in their lodge overlooking the mountains.
If you love horses, you can join a ride out of their stable or board your own horses in their stable space right at the foot of our hill. There are hundreds of miles of trails through fields and forests--you can go all the way to Skyline Drive from here.
For cyclists, our backroads are some of the most beautiful and least traveled in the region and the Double Top Wilderness area has lots of great mountain bike trails to take in as well.
So much to do in every season!
