About Lychee Chiu

A grandmother of four beautiful girls. Living in the serene Redwood region of California.

Love traveling, swimming, hiking, reading, and wondering in the redwood forest. A volunteer, an activist of healthy life style and a student of Hindu philosophy.

Lychee Chiu purchased this condo in 2007

Why Lychee Chiu chose South Oahu

LOCATION, CONVENIENCE & SPACE! Only 5 minutes walk to beautiful Waikiki Beach near Duke Kahanamoku statue. Walking distance to Kapiolani Park and zoo. PRIVATE only 4 units per floor. RARE spacious unit, open floor plan with partial view to the ocean and Diamond Head. This property has something for everyone. If you drive, a parking space is provided. If you want to leave the car behind, Oahu has excellent public transportation, giving access to all parts of the island.

What makes this condo unique

This home is simply a place to relax and enjoy outdoor activities. In my case, mainly swimming in the warm Pacific waters, and watching the magical beach sunset.

Our home is not the most modern, but it has everything you will need to relax after a busy day of fun.

Perfect for our trip

  • 5 of 5

I have no complaints about the property. The location (literally 2 blocks from the beach) was great and it is amongst a good number of hotels in Waikiki. If you've ever been to Waikiki, you know that ABC convenience stores are EVERYWHERE, and if there was anything we needed, we could get them easily. However, we didn't need anything. The condo was well stocked with basic amenities, the cable and Wi-Fi were great and there were no issues with the a/c units or water pressure. Parking was a great bonus and wasn't too tight. Like almost all of the other reviews mentioned, street noise is pretty prominent. The a/c hum definitely helped buffer that and of course double pained windows would be great, but that's not my call. The condo was clean and there were beach towels and toys provided as well as sunscreen! The unit could use a few cosmetic upgrades like bedding and couch covers, but again not my call. Again, I have no complaints about the property itself. It was an incredibly cost effective alternative to a traditional hotel and the check-in/checkout process was a breeze.

Good stay.

  • 3 of 5

Property was clean, no complaint.

Have all necessary amenities, plus some such as body surf boards and goggles.

A little bit of traffic noise but expected.

Overall a decent stay for a decent price.

Thank you!

comfortable unit though not quite as glamorous as the photos suggest

  • 4 of 5

our stay and the condo were comfortable. The area seemed safe and well-lite, and the parking spot was indeed very helpful. The photos and description present a slightly more glamorous view of the condo and immediate surrounding area. The kitchen was clean and all the appliances worked. Same for the bathrooms. There is a small balcony but we did not use it. As others have noted, noise from the outside world is readily heard throughout the night. This is, I believe, because the windows are old-style Jalousie/louvre crank-out ones that are not only single-pane but are not expected to seal perfectly. Replacing these with modern double-pain windows would help tremendously. I imagine that if the wall insulation is as old as the windows then upgrading the insulation would help much also. I ran the window AC all night so the street noise was not really a problem, however on our last night an AC unit from a condo above ours dripped condensate from a respectable height that landed on the casing of my room's AC unit, making a loud pattern of noise that repeated every 10 seconds. This was loud enough to wake me up and prevent me from getting back to sleep quickly. I believe that each AC unit is supposed to have a collection tube to prevent condensate from falling below -- our unit did -- so it is just a matter of having that other resident fix theirs.

Perhaps surprisingly, noise from within the complex was not noticeable, even though the elevator was essentially next door.

The beach and an Eggs 'N' Things restaurant facing the beach were only 2-3 blocks away, which was great. The main convention center was around 1.5 miles away which was a minor inconvenience if you have to walk there daily. There is a man-made canal/lake 2 blocks north which has a nice, safe jogging/biking path that you can take for longer jogs to and through the Waikiki park and up towards Diamondhead.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. The pictures and description of condo are of ordinary and present the condo as it is. The pictures are not professionally taken. The most important is that you have a wonderful time for your vacation and you enjoy the condo.

Great location, easy access, parking and comfort

  • 5 of 5

I have visited the Islands about 8 times in the past ten years and I have previously vacationed in this building on the second level and I can tell you that the higher location (level 7) of Papaya Inn is a game changer... With views of the mountains to the north and a glimpse of diamond head to the east and the ocean from your bedroom window was a welcome addition.

The main bedroom has a free standing clothes rack, air con, drawers and a semi ensuite (basin and toilet) with sliding g doors opening to the family/sitting room.

The lounge room has a large pull out couch and a futon (the futon was working as a seat only during our stay as the owner was awaiting a part to repair it in order for it to be used as a bed).

Nice HD TV with cable TV and super fast wifi jnternet throughout .

The kitchen is well equipped with everything you could need.... Be careful to ensure the fridge door closes and seals properly (it's a bit finniky).

Bathroom is nice with a tub and shower and basin... If you are going to stay more then a couple of days you'll need to buy additional TP....

The second bedroom has an air-conditioned unit and a TV (no cable TV ? I'm not sure because I did not use it).

Lanai is spacious and overlooks diamond head with a glimpse of the ocean.

There is a table out there and a couple of Whicker chairs. They are pretty wobbly though so be sure to be careful if you have indulged too much at Zippys or Leonards....

There is a coffee table in the lounge as well as a dining table (Bar style) with four chairs.

Plenty of space to laze and relax.

The apartment has a sloping floor which takes about a day to get used to, but then you will be fine.

Prepare yourself for locks... There are 5 on the two doors to the lanai and three more on the front door. It did make the apartment feel safe and secure though...

Noise wise it was not too bad, but if you like a breeze while you sleep, the cop cars and garbage collectors may bother you. Earplugs would help, or just close the door and let the air-conditioner hum.

The parking spot was easy to access and I never had difficulty parking a mid size SUV (rogue) there even when workmen had parked under the building to do work.

It seems like the permanent residents of the building have had some bad experiences with short term renters in the past as there is no shortage of warning signs about not bringing sand into the building and not smoking.

The owner, Lychee was super accommodating and helpful. Great.

Waikiki apartment

Great location, easy walk to beach, restaurant and Waikiki shopping. Noise mentioned in other reviews not that bad in the bedrooms as AC units have a constant drone - easy to get used too. Unit was clean and everything was as advertised in the add. Recommended stay.
