Featured in THE NEW YORK TIMES 'Escapes' section titled, 'HOUSES ON QUIET WATER: KAYAKS, CANOES AND TRANQUILITY,' we welcome you to one of the original guest houses of the Harrison G. Otis 'Beech Hill' Great Camp!
Built in the late 1920s, Camp Barkeater on Osgood Pond is a lakeside Adirondack retreat only 12 miles from Saranac Lake. The property of this former Great Camp is part of a friendly and small, year-round community. It's a perfect, old-timey setting for a romantic couple, outdoorsy family or friends vacationing together who wish to be on a low-trafficked pond where you can fish and swim from your own dock. Camp Barkeater is an old-fashioned housekeeping rental for those who choose to be on their own in the true Adirondack 'camp' tradition while enjoying some modern comforts.
Situated less than 100 ft. from the lake, the feeling of this lovely camp is airy and open. The lake view surrounds you while eating breakfast or reading on the screened porch. It follows you inside while you're preparing meals on a large kitchen island with family and friends under an old bead board cathedral ceiling. You're in a cook's kitchen, equipped with a full-size refrigerator, stove and oven and filled with all the extras needed for anything from baking and pizza making to BBQ.
Share an afternoon picnic by the water's edge, relax in comfortable Adirondack chairs, read in a hammock or paddle around in camp's complimentary canoes or kayak. When night falls, gather down by the lake for the celestial spectacle of the milky way and a star-filled sky unblemished by city light. Or, warm yourself by the fire burning in the living room's cobblestone fireplace and listen to the loon calls. Enjoy a wide selection of books, puzzles and games or pamper yourself with a warm bath in a large, claw foot tub before retiring to a queen-size, antique brass bed. On a rainy day, watch an old gem from a large, classic video collection. And, for your convenience, Camp Barkeater comes equipped with bedding, towels and beginning paper products for your stay.
Historic Osgood Pond, located near the St. Regis Canoe Area, is a soft-bottomed and shallow pond ideal for swimming. Osgood Pond is 16 feet deep making it warmer and more conducive to swimming than deeper, colder ponds. Go fishing from your dock -- especially nice for kids and beginner fisher persons -- or paddle your canoe and catch some warm-water fish (northern pike, large & small mouth bass, perch, sunfish and bullhead). You'll find easy access into Jones Pond or, more adventurously, into the legendary 'hand-dug' canals which flow into Little Osgood Pond and Church Pond. These canals were traveled by Osgood residents at the turn of the century to attend church on Sundays. Osgood Pond stretches almost 2 miles long and another 3 miles down the Osgood River where much of the shoreline is undeveloped state land.
If the woodlands call to you, walk the various trails or visit the Butterfly House at the Adirondack Visitors Center ('The VIC') just across the road. Nearby hikes include Jenkins, Debar, Floodwood, Azure and Blue Hill Mountains, all located within relative proximity to Osgood Pond. The trail head for St. Regis Mountain is roughly 3-1/2 miles down Keese Mill Road which is located just north of the entrance to Paul Smiths College. Closer to home, discover the secluded paths of the Red Dot Trail, walk the footpaths over the canals and join up with the Jack Rabbit Trail.
At the end of the day, head over to our neighborhood pub, The Shamrock, for a home-cooked meal and a Wednesday night music jam. At Paul Smiths College, choose lunch at the St. Regis Cafe or dinner at The Palm Restaurant where students in the Culinary and Hospitality program serve gourmet fare.
We hope you'll choose Camp Barkeater on Osgood Pond...it's everything you'll need to enjoy an Adirondack vacation you'll always remember!
Relocated to the Adirondack Mountains 24 years ago when I chose hiking, paddling and snow shoeing as part of my daily life.
Osgood Pond is a truly pristine Adirondack lake and restoring this historic old camp has been a labor I've loved!
Many local folks treasure this special Pond and happily cooperate with our Pond Stewards and volunteer to keep it free of invasive water species, a rarity in most bodies of water these days. We hope you'll join in our tradition of keeping Osgood "hitchhiker-free" from your watercraft!
This place is the perfect spot to kick back and relax. The cabin is clean and well maintained, The kitchen has everything you need to cook and eat in if you want or a short drive will get you to some good eats in Saranac Lake. Osgood Pond is only 100 ft away so its easy to take a swim or launch your kayak or canoe...or use the ones provided with your rental. And its a very quiet lake as no jet skis are allowed. Miles of terrific well maintained hiking trails are 5 minutes from camp at the VIC which is run by Paul Smith's College. Eagles and loons are present every year we visit so bring your camera. The only issue we've faced is that the single bath has a footed tub w/ shower that requires a step up to get into. Some people may find that a bit difficult people to negotiate. This is just a wonderful spot to stay and get away from it all and I would recommend it to anyone
We were looking for the perfect place to plan a Girls Week Adirondack Get Away. As a native of the area I was put in charge of finding the perfect place. I did with Camp Barkeater. The camp is very cozy, comfortable, yet roomy enough for the five of us. The kitchen is better to stocked than most of our homes! Sunny days were spent in the water, and cooler days in front of the wood-burning fireplace. However the highlight of the day was morning coffee on the dock listening to the loons and watching the eagles, or evening cocktails doing the same. The location is ideal for many great activities and sights, however I warn you, you may not be able to pull yourself away from the dock.
We were lucky enough to have met Angela on her way out when we arrived. She's a thoughtful and amiable host. She left us a welcoming pie in the freezer, which I thought was a very nice gesture. Additionally, she gave us wonderful insights about the local hikes and where to paddle. The house was adorable and well decorated. We enjoyed having dinner every night on the enclosed veranda with the lakeview in the backdrop. During the first few days, we went canoeing, swam, sunbathed, and enjoyed a mini picnic with wine on the dock. It was just a wonderful and peaceful time we had at Camp Barkeater. Thank you so much, Angela!
On our arrival a loon welcomed us as we viewed the waning sunset above the hills across the lake. We were pleasantly surprised at how the camp's decor realistically depicted an earlier era down to the smallest detail. We came for the photographic opportunities and were rewarded with a beautiful setting: the yellow Adirondack chair shining through the morning mist and the multi-colored trees as we paddled around Osgood Pond. In the evening our fireplace blazed as we shared a romantic dinner. As we departed on a crystal clear morning a loon swam up to the dock. What a perfect first visit to New York; we look forward to coming back!
Camp Barkeater was exactly what my wife and I were looking for. This is a camp with all the necessary amenities. We went canoeing, hiking and fishing all within 5 minutes of the cabin. We hiked St. Regis which is right next to Paul Smiths College. The canoe trip into Jones Pond was wonderful and we'll have to come back for the trip into Church Pond. The camp is wonderfully located about 10 minutes from Saranac Lake right in the middle of everything "Adirondack"
Angela’s Camp Barkeater is one of those rare rental places, (and I, with my life partner John have rented many). From the moment I arrived I felt very much at home. It is clearly a labor of love for Angela: furnished, decorated and supplied in a caring, personal, and appropriately “camp” way. Not too fancy, not too basic, just right. From the gardens outside to every kitchen accoutrement to plenty of historic decorative artifacts and books, it all speaks to the time when camps were getaways and focused on simply reconnecting and hanging out - with nature, your family and friends, yourself. It is located in a terrific part of the Adirondacks with incredible outdoor options right at hand like paddling and hiking, and with access to Saranac Lake and Lake Placid for a good level of services without a lot of driving. I loved it so much I am coming back with John later this fall. Thanks, Angela for sharing your wonderful camp.
There's also numerous activities in our little neighborhood: Easy walking and history tours can be enjoyed at White Pine Camp where President Coolidge vacationed. Paul Smiths College one mile away offers 24 hour, high-speed WiFi service, a Library, a Post Office, a Bookstore and a Restaurant run by the culinary students. And, a local Farmer's Market is held every Friday afternoon at The Vic where you'll also find art exhibits, a gift shop and seasonal concerts.
Osgood Pond is only 15 minutes from historic Saranac Lake (voted one of 12 Distinctive Destinations in the US by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2006), 30 minutes from Lake Placid restaurants, shopping and Olympic venues and 2 hours from both Burlington, VT and Montreal, Canada.
