This two bedroom converted attic apartment with private deck sprawls the entire top floor of a nine unit building built in 1909 on the corner of Scott and Filbert in Lower Cow Hollow. It is a well loved jewel with northerly views that will take your breath away.
There is a 3 floor walk up to this quirky, low ceilinged 'penthouse' filled with colorful art and antiques. So, if you have bad knees, are a basketball player, crave beige or blank walls look elsewhere. This is not a typical rental, but our home when we are in town.
All of one's cares literally go out the window once you step into this magical world. The typical responses are 'I want to live here! 'Why don't I live here!' 'Why Didn't Daddy buy this for me!!!'
There have been many modern upgrades since 1909 that make the living experience free and easy. The kitchen is equipped to make any cook happy. There is wi-fi, a Bose CD player with iPod dock, wireless printer/copier, a 32 inch flatscreen, DVD player, Apple T.V. with streaming HBO and Netflix. Outside on the deck, there is seating for 8 and a Weber Genesis BBQ.
There are also so many restaurants nearby that do take-out and two grocery stores with sophisticated prepared menus that if one doesn't feel like cooking there are great options.
Be aware that I do NOT have a garage. There is 2 hour street parking during the week days with unlimited evenings and weekends. If I have enough notice, I can arrange for a temporary parking permit, but only for up to two months and for a modest fee.
The apartment has an open floor plan with two private bedrooms. The Master has a queen size bed and the guest room has a double. Both beds have pillow top mattresses, lovely cotton sheets and goose down comforters. It comfortably sleeps 2 to 3, however in my opinion, the apartment is best enjoyed by two... two VERY responsible, non-smoking adults without pets or small children (too much is too tempting) who enjoy ethnic eclectic and have a sense of humor.
The views and the location are spectacular. Please look at the pictures carefully.

After getting an MA in religious studies, I married and moved to California. I taught art for years in the Bay area while raising two children. My daughter now runs a sailing school in Sydney, Australia and my son is an artist living in Mexico City. I am remarried to an artist and living in Deer Isle, Maine.

I bought this property because the moment I walked up the final flight of narrow stairs I fell in love. The view, the old world feel, the safe and charming neighborhood and the warmth of the other owners made buying in easy. It is a delightful magical place.
Now that we live in Maine full time and can only visit a few weeks out of the year, I have decided to make the apartment available on VRBO.
Sitting out on the deck in the morning sun drinking coffee, listening for the wild parrots and looking out in any direction is just Heaven... Or sitting in the living room in the late afternoon watching the waning light sweep the city and then burn into the windows over in the Berkley Hills... Or just watching the weather and listening to the fog horns and all the dynamic activity on the Bay... is captivating. Sometimes it is hard to peel away from the view to go to that museum opening, but one of my favorite cities in the world is waiting right outside the door.....
Great apt in a great area of town. It's a walk-up but a very easy one, with a wide staircase down below, and fun attic garret stair for the last floor. Decorated extensively with colorful, fun art, rugs and pottery. Beds are super super comfy, with down pillow toppers and down duvets! Easy walk to restaurants, shops and the Marina Green and Chrissy Field Beach are easily walkable for anyone remotely fit. Amazing views of the GG Bridge, Sausalito and Angel Island. Great deck, been having morning coffee out there and even in the fog, it is sheltered enough to be comfortable outside.
Only thing I didn't consider is the ceiling height. Fine for me (5'8") but my husband (6'4") was worried he was going to wack the lights (he didn't) and he said it was a tad bit challenging to use the loo (standing up). Anyway, none of those issues for me or my daughter.
Kitchen was well stocked. We didn't use most of the appliances, but they looked in good condition. Shower had good water pressure, didn't try the bathtub. Washer and dryer are downstairs (communal) and worked well.
Owner was super easy to communicate with and really went the extra mile with us, letting us check in at 1am because of a late flight. I had told her we would just book a hotel room near the airport as it was so late, but she organized for someone to meet us and let us in.
Overall, if you are looking for something with a boatload of charm, fanciful art and great views... this is your place.

My wife and I were working in San Francisco for a while, and this was the perfect place. The top-floor view is north, and the big picture window gives you a stunning view of everything from the Golden Gate Bridge to past Alcatraz. It's a short walk (with a hill on the return; this is S.F., after all) to Chestnut St. for a good grocery store, a wine store, restaurants, latte parlors, a big drugstore, even an Apple Store--in short, for everything you might need. Also a short walk to Union Street, for the same. The No. 45 bus (a block and a half away) will take you to North Beach, Chinatown, Downtown, and all the way to the CalTrain terminal for trips down the Peninsula. Get a Clipper Card and you're all set. The apartment has everything you need for cooking, sleeping, bathing, etc., so all you have bring are your clothes.
The apartment is in a great location, quiet neighborhood that is easily accessible to many restaurants, stores and the waterfront. The view is spectacular where you can just sit and watch the boats on the bay and the city wake up while you drink your coffee. The beds are super comfortable and the apartment is just like being at home. The only thing you need is to stop at the store and get some food for your stay! The pictures describe the space perfectly! Walking is a must to discover the areas around you and the amazing architecture. We were continually finding new things each day all around as we explored. I recommend signing up for Zipcar and leaving the city from there. There are pickup locations just a couple of blocks away and it allows for extended adventures without taking time out of your day to pick up a rental at the airport and dealing with parking around the apartment. The owner was very helpful and answered any questions that I had and made great suggestions for places to go. I recommend this rental and would stay here again without hesitation!
I can only echo the comments regarding the location and views.......spectacular. The location is great, close to lots of good neighborhood restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The apartment building was nice and quiet and the accommodation minders couldn't be more helpful.
An ideal base to launch from if you have a car rental and plan to go explore the Northern Californian coast over the bridge.
I will definitely check if this rental is free next time I visit this beautiful neighborhood and city!
The position of this apartment is superb. To be a couple of blocks from the nicest part of Chestnut Street, and a couple of blocks from the beginning of the interesting part of Union Street is amazing.
The views are simply fantastic (both from the living room windows and the roof terrace). I have rented many times in this neighborhood, but this is the first time I have had a view over the bay. It adds another dimension....from the moment you get out of bed in the morning you know you are in wonderful San Francisco.
I would describe the apartment itself as "quirky", and in some ways it suits the city it is in. As the photos show, there is an awful lot of decoration and memorabilia. It is on every shelf and in every corner. You are left in no doubt that you are staying in somebody's home....the owners' personal possessions are everywhere (including wardrobes and drawers). My biggest single complaint would be the lack of a single comfortable seat.
I always love my time in San Francisco, and I enjoyed this apartment. Its position and views more than make up for any shortcomings.
The views of the bay, the bridge and Alcatraz are stunning. The decor is sophisticated-hippy, the facilities are extensive and the beds are ultra-comfortable. If it's sunny, take a barbecue on the deck and if it ever rains (which San Francisco prays for) you have TV, Netflix, quality radio, hundreds of books and DVDs... plus those vistas to gaze at from the picture window. Top marks for helpfulness go to the owner and the accommodation minders.
The corner of Filbert and Scott is within easy walking distance to all of the shops, bars and restaurants on Union St and Fillmore and then going across Lombard to Chestnut St where there are two cinemas, an excellent grocery and meat market, bakeries etc. etc. It is less than a 20 min walk down Scott St to the Marina Green and to the Bay. Zip Cars are nearby and buses or cabs can take you anywhere in the city or beyond. The location is perfect. I have a list of favorite restaurants and things to do. But, you may find that once perched on the deck or inside looking out the picture window at all the activity on the Bay the need to go anywhere slips away...
