Fantastic Cottage, great for Families!
What a great week. With room for everyone in the family, grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren. Well equipped and something for everyone. The space suits family accommodation so well, with the loft for the younger kids, 3 separate rooms for adults and the little mini guest area above the garage was perfect for those with little ones.
There are so many much desired vacations wants, such as relaxing in the hammock or on the front screen porch, the sitting in the sun on the dock or swimming to the swim platform, to wadding in the water in the walk in beach area with the little ones. The kayaks are great and we enjoyed them very much and got great use of them. We also had our own canoe and motor boat which were easy to accommodate on the dock with the mooring for use if needed for any stormy weather which is typical of Maine summers.
It turned out to be a good thing having no internet as it kept the younger generation from doing what they usually do and instead they found lots of great ways to spend their time.
The road is a bit tough if you have a low vehicle so be sure to keep slow as the road is long, narrow but the destination is great and so peaceful, quiet and private.
We all look forward to spending vacation time here again next summer.
Thank you for sharing this lovely place with our family!
Location is ideal for two family or extended family old fashioned vacation no INTERNET yeah
We stepped back in time, swam, boated, read, cooked, enjoyed meals together, yet everyone was able to do their own activities in small groups or alone-- a sandy beach for boat launching and for the littles to swim, a lovely dock for jumping off and a floating dock-- we swam to and from nearby islands with kayak accompaniment, read on the dock or under the trees. I felt no need to leave-- peaceful, lovely and beautiful with the right people, a time out of time experience. Rustic in all the right ways, but a good kitchen and a firepit outdoors, lots of room. We did go for a hike at Black Cap Mountain off Hurricane Mountain Road one day, when we needed to get out for groceries anyway. We had ages 9-23 along with two sets of parents and everyone was happy, in fact, loved it. But they are young people who read, play games, love nature, love boating, swimming and being engaged in the world. For us it was a plus that there was no Internet for our older teen who was married to his computer before the vacation--he loved the break and the face to face fun. Long driveway could be challenging in bad weather, but appealing in that you don't really want to leave.
Combines Classic Camp with Modern Luxuries
Truly a special and unique property. It had all the beauty of a rustic lakefront lodge combined with amenities (dishwasher, washer, dryer) that make for a comfortable and relaxing vacation. We went with six children ranging in age from 6-12 and it was a perfect for our needs. You could not be any closer to the water without having wet feet. If you like swimming, sunning, camp fires, walking in the woods, the call of the loons and total privacy this is the place for you. The owners obviously have a lot of love for their home and the area and it shows in all the details of the house.
Couldn't have been nicer!
Our week on Highland Lake at this lovely lakeside lodge couldn't have been any nicer! This is a wonderful property. The location is private and quiet, situated on a point with gorgeous water views from all angles of the house. The carriage house has a great space with a bathroom and kitchen area that worked perfectly for our family with a new baby. There is something for everyone including a shallow sandy area for our two little grandsons and their parents to a great raft and tubes and kayaks for more experienced swimmers.
We loved the house itself from it's great fieldstone fireplace and comfortable family space, and bedrooms and well equipped kitchen to the outdoor hammock, dock and patio with night time music around the fire pit.
We watched the elegant eagle circle around the lake scouting for breakfast and talked with the loons and ducks that regularly visited. We swam like fish, fished for fish, hiked at nearby Shawnee Peak, painted, did a 1,000 piece puzzle in 24 hours and cooked lobster and steak on the grill.
Did a little shopping in quaint Bridgton and discovered some good restaurants in town, Beth's Kitchen (http://www.bethskitchencafe.com) for breakfast and lunch, and in nearby Naples, Brays Brewing (http://braysbrewpub.com) for dinner.
Our memories of this lovely vacation spot are still vibrant and beautiful and we can't help but dream about our next family vacation on Highland Lake!
