Bill has always loved small towns and thinks White Salmon is one of the best. He's a city councilman and has been actively engaged in a range of city improvement projects. He's perhaps most proud of his work to bring a wildly successful summer concert series to the area, livening up the town and bringing neighbors and tourists together. When he's not busy with city business Bill is dancing, playing piano, gardening, doing magic, telling jokes, or reading a good book. He'll take the time to help you get to know the area and help you find whatever suits your fancy - and there's a lot to offer inside or within a stone's throw of this great little town.
Bill Werst purchased this house in 2003
This property is located on the east end of downtown, an easy stroll to all shops and amenities. All restaurants are within 4 blocks, and grocery store and library are 1 block away. The river is just down the road, the mountains up, and a garden, patio and hot tub just steps outside the door. Main highways are a mile or two away, and will get you to the beach and snow ski resorts.
The New York Times listed White Salmon in their top 40 places to visit in 2013. With a dam recently removed, the White Salmon river now offers unprecedented white water experiences. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast or an arts and antiques aficionado, there's something for everyone here. If you've got a month or just a weekend, White Salmon is a wonderful place to rest and recreate.
Thank you for you very positive comments.
I very much enjoyed hosting you.
Bill was an amazing host-funny, kind, accommodating, helpful, just a darn nice guy! The beds were very comfy, the hot tub felt great after hiking, and the house has good energy. Thanks so much Bill, we greatly appreciate your hospitality and thoughtfulness!
Thank you, Bill, for your generosity! You are one of the kindest men I know. We miss you !!!
To the rest of you ; we stayed in the downstairs apartment for six weeks and got to know our host very well. Bill will give you space if that is what you desire, but he is also available and willing to provide whatever it is you may need. The location is absolutely perfect and the little town is charming, with some of the friendliest folk you will ever meet.
We really enjoyed our stay at this lovely place....Bill was an excellent host, the house had everything we needed for cooking, extra towels, nice hot tub. With two young children, the use of the laundry machines was very helpful! He even went the extra mile and mailed us some clothes that we left in the dryer! Excellent location, in downtown White Salmon, but quiet and private.
The house was in great shape; clean and comfortable with everything we needed during our stay (e.g., cook wear, utensils, extra towels). Our arrival time was somewhat uncertain because we were driving up from southern Oregon and Bill was very accommodating and flexible.
In addition, the house is well located. We were able to walk to a near by grocery store and coffee stand and were only minutes away from Hood River and within easy driving distance of Mt Hood and Columbia Gorge attractions. And the view of Mt Hood from the porch was incredible. After a day of hiking and sightseeing it was nice to sit comfortably outside and watch the sunset on the mountain.
My family travels to the gorge regularly and we'd happily stay here again. Thanks for a great stay, Bill.
Bill is a wonderful host, very generous, helpful and hospitable. We were welcomed and told to make ourselves at home and use anything in the house. Great beds plenty of fans and large thick towels. We especially loved sitting on the large front porch and sitting in the hot tub with the view of Mt Hood was a plus.
I would recommend this house and host to anyone and be happy to visit there again.
Our group rented the whole house for several days in July. It was a great place to stay, walking distance to White Salmon restaurants and shops. Short drive to kiteboarding, wind surfing and mountain bike trails. Bill couldn't have been a better host, he made our stay comfortable and made us feel welcome. Our kids loved the keyboards he let them "practice" on and also the hot tub and cherry trees. The house is large and charming, our favorite feature is the large front porch where we could enjoy coffee mornings and wine in the evenings. Bill was a fun person to visit with as well. We will stay again.
We're 5 - 15 minutes from the best sailing in the Gorge: the Hatchery, Swell City, Doug’s Beach. Downtown White Salmon is a 5 minute walk, where you'll find groceries, tennis courts, swimming, library, restaurants, pubs & trails. We're 4 blocks from 15 art galleries, with discounts in several.
