It is just a short walk, or bike ride, into town where you can tour the San Juan Bautista Historic State Park and Mission San Juan Bautista, spend time browsing in the many quaint shops and dine in the great restaurants. Take pictures of the town chickens, which are a source of much debate among the locals.
*****There are great hiking opportunities just outside the door: the De Anza Trail head, ½ mile away and Fremont Peak a little further on up the road are two favorites. Or just relax on the outdoor patio overlooking the vineyard and beautiful Pagen Hill, where the first padres placed their cross. There is also a secluded back patio where you can barbecue or picnic. Also on the property is Mansmith’s BBQ Outlet store where you can shop for gourmet seasonings and gift packs.
*****This charming home can be your homebase while exploring this beautiful, historic area.
*****Each year San Juan Bautista hosts several street festivals; arts and crafts shows, car shows, barbecue competitions and antique fairs. The Mission has its annual fiesta and the State Park celebrates with Living History Days each June.
*****El Teatro Campesino has a handful of comedies and dramas each year as well as some wonderful productions during the holiday season. There are also many musical events staged at the Old San Juan Bautista Misssion.
*****Hollister, CA in San Benito County is the earthquake capital of the world. Pick up a walking tour map of the historic downtown area. You can see evidence of earthquake movement on the some of the city streets.
*****Attend a real rodeo, the Saddle Horse Show and Parade is held each year in June. This has been a San Benito County tradition for 80 years.
*****Enjoy the Hollister Wine Trail through the Cienega Valley, 5 wineries with tasting rooms.
*****There are three golf courses in San Benito County and several more in the Gilroy area.
At the southern tip of San Benito County you can explore the newest national park, The Pinnacles. More great hiking and rock climbing.

Year Purchased: 1960
About the owner: Jon and Juanita both grew up in this area and have lived adjacent to this property since their marriage in 1966. They are involved in the local community with their long-time participation in many organizations that benefit the area. They have owned several businesses during the course of their time here. Most recently, they manufacture and distribute a fantastic line of Mansmith's Gourmet Seasonings, available online and in their Outlet Store located on the property. This is a real family effort, as their son has taken on the popular BBQ Catering business started by father and son. Jon and Juanita now keep their BBQ cooking skills sharp by participating in BBQ Competions. One of their newest interests is the small vineyard that they planted in 2009 in front of the guest house. Mission Vineyard Merlot is now a reality. BBQ and Wine, what a concept!
Why the Owner Chose San Juan Bautista, CA, USA:
Jon's parents bought this property, a former chicken ranch, in 1960 and remodeled the already 50+ year old farmhouse for their residence. Jon grew up here and has many fond memories of this wonderful area and his family home. When we inherited the property in 2002 it became a rental, however, after a few years the house was in need of extensive repair. Through the renovation process we became very attached to this wonderful old home where Jon's parents had hosted their family and friends for many years. We thought, 'wouldn't it be fun to share this home and this historic area with lots of other people.' As with any home that has been remodeled and renovated several times in its, now, 100+ years, 490 Mission Vineyard Road boasts elements of several eras. It is not stuck in any one time period, but shows its charming evolution. We have kept the warmth that Jon remembers while adding a few modern conveniences. We have used family pieces, accumulated over several years to furnish the rooms. We hope you will feel comfortable and at home here.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
This property has ideal weather no matter what the season. It is never too hot nor too cold in this San Juan Valley. You can always sit out on the front patio to enjoy the tranquill beauty of the Gabilan Mountains and the peacefulness of the vineyard with a glass of wine or a cold beer. The location is central to hundreds of nearby activities, events, historic sites and geologic phenomena. We are adjacent to the San Andreas Fault! San Andreas Fault on Mission Vineyard Road.
