About Derek and Jennifer Patterson
We have been in the vacation home business since 2007. We have recently made the move to the Clearwater/Dunedin area and are loving it! Derek is a former ICU nurse and Jennifer is a former science teacher. Derek now maintains an online international insurance brokerage and is in the process of starting up a charter business in the area! We feel we have truly discovered what makes our renters happy in our homes and love it when guests fall in love with the area and feel at home at the Cottage. Our oldest daughter has started college in the area and our two younger daughters are attending school and highly involved in volleyball. We are both originally from the Joplin/Springfield, Missouri area and lived there until May 2017. Our oldest daughter is attending college in the Tampa area and our two youngest continue to keep us busy with school and volleyball!
Derek and Jennifer Patterson purchased this House in 2013
Why Derek and Jennifer Patterson chose Clearwater
We ABSOLUTELY adore the Clearwater/Dunedin area. We searched for years to find just the right places that we would feel comfortable calling our home away from home. We knew the Cottage was 'the one' when we saw it in January 2013. The quiet, historic neighborhood and the huge, beautiful trees make this a place unlike any other in the area!
What makes this House unique
We fell in love with the little purple house under the oak trees at first sight. We love being just minutes to the beach and boating; however, we're not so crazy about being stuck in the hustle and bustle of big cities! We enjoy peace and quiet and not having to deal with noise outside our windows, especially on vacation!

Amazing and so accommodating:)
The cottage was adorable and SO clean! Full kitchen- we had it all. & We had a blast. Our kids had sand toys to bring to the beach, we had beach towels and chairs available. So much better than being crammed in a hotel. We explored the beautiful neighborhoods nearby on foot and had use of the darling yard. My favorite is the screened in porch, I had coffee and ate breakfast there every day. Everything we needed was there and The Patterson’s were super quick to respond with any questions I had via text or email. I would recommend the cottage highly and I would much rather give my money to nice people who keep an amazing home than big corporate cookie cutter hotels :)
I can’t say enough nice things !!! Thanks for the memories
Thanks so much for the kind words, Tonia! Totally agree on vacation homes being SO much better than a hotel; especially down on CLW Beach where it can get crazy sometimes. We would love to have you back any time!
Needs deep cleaning from dust and grease. It smells and has too much air fresheners to cover up. Better to invest in some ventilation and deep cleaning.
As others can see, you are the first out of over 50 reviews to give us 3 stars.
A couple of things: first of all, it is not a new home or hotel; the house is 104 years old with original hardwood floors etc. That being said, in the four years we have owned the Cottage there has not been a single complaint about smell. During your stay, we did have to ask you to close the doors you were leaving open. It is Florida....bringing high humidity into the house probably did not help your perceived "smell". The Cottage is on a smart system, we are alerted when doors are left open while the air conditioning is on, humidity levels etc. The air will always shut off when the doors are left open for more than 15 minutes. Despite my husband explaining this to you by phone, this continued to happen. Air conditioning/dehumidifier will keep the house at around 50% humidity if allowed to work properly.
Secondly, air fresheners we provide are simply for the use of guests as desired. The room spray I have is a nice lavender/vanilla; never thought a guest would perceive that as our attempt to cover up smell, as you stated.
As far as a deep cleaning, we will look into that ourselves this week and address it with our cleaner if necessary. Luiza has always done a great job for us. Once again....we've never had a single complaint about cleanliness in the past.
We do appreciate your criticism and will absolutely look into these items immediately. Our goal is for our guests to love the Cottage and the area, so we find it very disappointing that you did not enjoy your stay.
Cottage is absolutely beautiful
We loved our stay here in Clearwater, the cottage was amazing we felt right at home. We spent the majority of our time at the beach. Of course we had to go see Winter and Hope at the Marina. One of our family favorites was sailing on Captain Memos pirate ship. After a long day out in the sun it was so nice to come back to the cottage and enjoy playing games or watching movies, thank you again for opening up your home to us! We can't wait to come back.
The Buckels Family
Cozy and quiet.
Very nice little house that's close to downtown Clearwater yet far enough away to be quiet and serene. Stayed for a glorious relaxing week of Phillies spring baseball. 2 bedrooms, 1&1/2 baths, nice shower, the beds are great, HD cable TV, WiFi, Roku, washer & dryer, dishwasher. Very little local traffic. The Clearwater ferry is just a short walk away. Or drive there, the parking is free! The ferry crews were friendly and informative. There are 2 golf courses close by. The Aquarium is nice. We loved the house and will stay here again! Jennifer was lovely to talk to and accessible. We called her once and she returned our call within minutes!
This beautiful house had almost everything we needed!
We really enjoyed our time at the house. The weather wasn't the best during our stay, so we spent a lot of time there. We were within walking distance of everything we needed, and even walked over to get our nails done. The house itself was very clean! We used the microwave and oven to cook with and the coffee pot in the morning. We used the washer and dryer quite a bit. The shower was great and it helped having 2 toilets with the 4 of us. I think the only thing I wish there had been was a few collapsible chairs to take to the beach. They may have been there, but I couldn't find them. The beds were very comfortable as well, we never had a bad nights sleep. We used the cable and the roku a little bit, the roku remote needs replaced soon because it is missing the middle enter button. It still worked for us though. The location of the house is ideal, we were able to get everywhere we wanted to go within 10-15 minutes. I will defininetly stay here again if I come back to the area!
Thanks so much! We will have to get that Roku remote replaced....noticed it had lots of use the last time we were down! :) There should have been beach chairs inside the lanai locker/container? Hopefully they're still there, but if not, we will definitely get a few more of those. We would love to have you back, so glad you enjoyed the Cottage as much as we do!
Excellent place to stay for a small family
Conveniently located near Clear Water Beach with local shops and stores. We loved it. Sure beat a four star hotel when it comes to privacy and freedom like your own home. One suggestion we have is to have an exhaust fan for the kitchen. People like us visiting a beach town will definitely mean lots of sea food, but along with it comes the aroma which we enjoy while eating, but not on our clothes.
So glad you enjoyed your stay. It definitely beats a hotel; we absolutely dread hearing other guests when we are trying to sleep! Thanks for the suggestion on the vent, we will definitely check into adding that!
Our home is located in a beautiful, historic area of downtown Clearwater. Easy walk to top-rated restaurants and shopping. Only a 5 minute drive to famous Clearwater Beach and only a 2 block walk to pier over Clearwater Harbor where you can sit and enjoy the scenery or fish. Gorgeous high end, mossy oak lined neighborhoods are perfect for evening walks. Enjoy peace and quiet, but yet only minutes away from everything you want in a Florida vacation!
