About Rita Spence
As past longtime yearround resident and owner of residential and commercial valuation firm, I knew the many merits and value of chosing to buy and live in the Katama section of Edgartown.
Rita Spence purchased this Cottage in 2000
Why Rita Spence chose Katama
I built this rental in 2000 with good components -- such as all wood and tile floors, modern bath and kitchen, many cabinets, private rear deck -- and all the amenities.
What makes this Cottage unique
Cannot beat the combination of excellent linkages to town with its many restaurants, shops, movie theaters, harbor, Captain's Houses; plus proximity to South Beach and the Atlantic Ocean, and direct access to bike path. At same time, you are not having to pay the typically high tariffs for this desirable locale, since this is a one-bedroom unit, and almost impossible to find. Yet, you are not giving up on a true retreat but with modern creature comforts: central and quiet air conditioning, full kitchen with dishwasher, separate sit-down dining, private outdoor deck with grill and outdoor dining, modern large bathroom, and a loft bedroom where I and many of my guests report enjoying some of their most restful sleeps.

Our favorite area to stay in. Halfway between Edgartown and South Beach. Right on the bus line. No need to add another car to the MV traffic, or search for a place to park. The place was small but adequate for two. Nice to have a washer and dryer. Lovely host! We would stay again.
Wonderful area to stay!
The area where it is located is ideal! It is right between town and south beach! It is fully disclosed in the description and Janet did call me and talk to me about her home to explain the lofted bedroom situation but it was very tight. The house was clean but I would describe it as a “little tired” considering the area. It did not make us want to have a night in and if the weather hadn’t been beautiful it would have really dampened our vacation. Don’t get me wrong for the price you can’t beat the location but was a little too small for us.
Janet, the owner was lovely and accommodating.
Lovely Hideaway in Edgartown
Great location near the beach. Lovely hideaway that is very quiet and private. Everything was in order and all places of interest are minutes away. Had a good stay and would consider again when in Edgartown.
Perfect location & perfect property for two!
Loved being just a mile outside of town and two from South Beach. The size of the unit was fine for two- the ladder up to the loft has some big steps, so it’s not suitable for children or anyone w/ physical/health challenges. The deck portion is completely private and set on backside of property away from street. There was a couple w/ a young child on other side of the shared property and we barely heard them. Great place for an affordable Edgartown getaway!
Wonderful experience. Would recommend to anyone.
Rita was absolutely wonderful. She took time out of her schedule to visit with us. She is an genuine as you will find. Ask her for breakfast recommendations - AMAZING!! Enjoy!!
My happy place
I absolutely adore this cottage in the highly desirable Katama section of Edgartown. It's compact yet includes modern, quality components (all wood and tile floors, sit-at bar plus separate conventional seating dining, dishwasher, nice closet space, AC). It has everything necessary for a fabulous getaway on the stunning, laid back island of Martha's Vineyard. We love to cook and eat in a lot so the fully stocked kitchen and outdoor grill provided all we needed to make tasty, healthy meals. The local fish market and wine shop are a quick bike ride away. The loft bedroom is accessed by a ladder which is not suitable for the elderly or persons with disabilities (which is probably why the price is so affordable). The bathroom is spacious and next to the washer and dryer, which is essential for any beach trip. The location is unbeatable as it's an easy walk into Edgartown for breakfast at Dock Street or shopping or dining in town. Head in the other direction and you can easily walk, jog or bike to South Beach. It's also an easy bike ride to Morning Glory Farms where you can pick up fresh produce and tasty baked goods. Rita is super knowledgeable about the island and was more than happy to go above and beyond to make our vacation as great as possible. I would totally recommend this cottage to a couple interested in an affordable vacation with nearby beaches and great dining. It's also great for vacationers without a car. Rita is super knowledgeable about the island and was more than happy to go above and beyond to make our vacation as great as possible.
take a left fron the driveway, short walk along bike path to downtown Edgartown just 15 minutes to shop, eat gelatto or dine at a number of great restaurants, watch the boats at the harbor, or fish for eels off the dock. Turn right from house to walk or take bike down the bike path to South Beach (about 0.9 miles). Eat breakfast outside en route at grassfield Katama Airport, one of airports Charles Lindburgh flew in and still includes bi-planes. You can take off for a casual bike ride to the beach or to town directly from the house or, If venturesome, you can bike from foot of driveway for forty miles on mix of bike paths and rural roads.
