About Dan Simmons

My name is Dan Simmons, I built this home in 2012. New beautiful home with a beautiful view of the ocean. We love visiting Hawaii and fell in love with the quiet town of Na'alehu and Discovery Harboure. We live one the mainland for now but home to live in Hawaii full time someday. We enjoy this home very much and enjoy the quite and relaxing atmosphere

we hope you will also.

Dan Simmons purchased this house in 2012

Why Dan Simmons chose Naalehu

We chose this location because it is not touristy but a quite rural community, a place to relax and get to know the real Hawaiian culture and community. We enjoy all the local activities. Local farmers markets on Wednesday and Saturday mornings and quiet secluded beaches.

What makes this house unique

Located on Hawaii's South Point are sites that are a little off the beaten path, but not far from many destinations that are well worth having a look like Volcano Park, South Point Cliffs, Punalu'u Black Sand beach

Beautiful new home

  • 3 of 5

Location is great view is great.

Beds were awful. I have not slept in a full size bed since Highschool.

Air flow in the home was horrible and hot we noticed black mold growing on the walls everywhere.

Windows in the bedroom were screwed shut would have not need so bad if they had a couple of room fans. One ceiling fan was not enough.

Never been a fan of round bowl toilets I find them too small.

Shower heads were a joke like grandmas old water bucket. Spend $12.00 and get a shower head with a removable hose.

It was nice to have washer and dryer but running up and down stairs with laundry was a pain

Owner's Response: There is no black mold anywhere in this rental. I wonder why this vacationer did not contact me if he suspected this. If there is an issue, my caretaker is quick to respond to anything. This is a newer home and I have never seen any black mold. There are two small windows that do not open in the master bedroom but there is also a very large window that does, I am confused on this point and why it would even be mentioned. Every room has windows that do open. Every room has a ceiling fan that operates. There are two French doors that open to the living room. Air circulation should not be an issue. Most of the guests have been pleased with the accommodations. I am always willing to make your stay a pleasant one. Mahalo Dan

Great place

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at Dan's place in Discovery Harbour. We love the quiet, laid back, more rural feel of this area of the island, and Dan's house is perfect for an extended stay if you want to be away from the 'touristy' areas. It's comfortable, clean, well-equipped and well-maintained, and the local caretaker is close by and very accessible should you have any questions or need assistance during your stay.

We loved having morning coffee on the deck, enjoying the expansive view of the ocean and the peaceful green of the golf course adjacent. Day trips to Volcano National Park are easy (a reasonable drive at about 1 hr each way) - we went hiking there multiple times with the convenient proximity. We opted to stay in Puna area one night when we biked out to see the lava-hose, near Kalapana, so we could stay after it got dark; driving back would make for a long day but is doable (friends of ours staying in the same subdivision did this as a day-trip). Other places worth exploring nearby include the Kahuku Unit of VNP, South Point, Punalu'u (Black Sands), Whittington - the longer you stay, the more you'll discover!

This vacation rental is a great place for those looking for something other than a 'beach vacation'!

Great property. Lots of space for the price. Super quiet and peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

This property worked out great for us. We wanted to spend time on both East and West sides of the island , and more towards the south end than the north. So a property near the south end made a lot of sense. Also meant we could pick a property in a very nice, very quiet and peaceful spot. Finally, also allowed us to get way more house for the money than other locations nearer Kailua-Kona on West side or Hilo on the East. Just keep in mind that if you want to spend most of your time either in Hilo or in Kona or Kohala coast, then you'll have long drive every day you want to be there.

We had a fantastic time, and enjoyed south-western beaches as well as south eastern coast (tidepools and warm water pool). Swam with some spinner dolphins too, when we were snorkeling one afternoon off south-west coast. A group of 5 or 6 spinner dolphins came into the same bay and started showing off to all the snorkelers (there were many). This was amazing!

Dan was very quick to respond and coordinating our trip was a breeze. Missy, who manages and takes care of the property was very friendly and helpful. If you want to be on the south side of the island, you can't go wrong with this property.

South point paradise

  • 5 of 5

The house had a great view of the ocean, it felt very secluded and was quiet. Close to the black beach where the turtles sun and the green beach (which is a windy hike). The volcano park is only an hour away. Hilo and Kona are both only 11/2 hours away. Great central location.

Big place, great views!

  • 5 of 5

The four of us greatly enjoyed our stay here. It was clean and the place was very large! Everything was clean and the kitchen was amazing. The view of the ocean in the morning was beautiful. The town of Naalehu was very nice and had a good bakery. You definitely need a car as it is a bit of a drive to get anywhere, but that seems to be the way it is on the big island. The location is about halfway between Hilo and Kona, so a good compromise to explore the whole island. Laundry facilities would have been nice, but the laundromat in Naalehu is only about 5-10 minutes away. All in all, a great vacation spot!

And the Green sand beach, requires a four wheel drive to access or you can walk it is a 1.5 mile hike. It is well worth the the trip. Don't miss the Punalu'u Bakery in the hamlet of Na'alehu There is a Farmers Market on Wed. and Sat. lots of fresh organic veggies and fruit and beautiful hand made crafts. Stop in at the Shaka bar for a cool one or home cooked meals at the Hana Hou restaurant. Don't miss Punalu'u Black Sand Beach and the giant green sea turtles that sun themselves on the beach this is also a great place to snorkel and see squid flashing colors. Just down the road is Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, this is a must see Kilauea Volcano and walk through the ancient lava tubes stop in at Volcano house to peak in the Kilauea Caldera. On to the Town of Volcano where you can resupply and get some great food after hiking the volcano park. Just down the road is Hilo Town, make sure you see the Hawai'i Tropical Botanical Garden
