Nice, as far as you can drive from Mazama (in winter)

Riverstone Cabin in January 2018

Riverstone Cabin is about as far from Winthrop (and Mazama) as you can drive up Lost River Road. There is a somewhat steep roadway on the way down to it that a 2WD probably would not negotiate with snow on the ground - so after a snowfall you should have AWD or 4WD.

We saw very few neighbours in our winter stay. There is no WiFi or Internet connection, and we had no mobile coverage from south of Mazama. The locals told us that Verizon reaches here, but we didn't have Verizon phones. The land line telephone was working. We didn't see a radio and didn't turn on the TV.

The house is styled from the 1980s with the mix of useful but varied furniture one expects in a remote location. It was clean and the sculptured carpet was in good condition. We were able to cook whatever we could think of with the full-sized stove and fridge, and a good supply of mixed dishes and cooking utensils including a coffee grinder, coffee maker & toaster.

The house was pretty cold when we arrived in January, but the quirky electric wall heaters (with thermostats directly beside the elements), kept us warm and comfy after an hour or two. The central wood stove is not very efficient but with an ample wood supply it kept us warm too.

The driveway was plowed when we arrived after an 8" snowfall - fabulous for our skiing - but we had to dig out a bit to find the stairs. Be careful where you park in case an avalanche comes down off the roof - we were lucky to be out skiing and found a pile where our car had been.

I was glad to bring my own pillow - not a fan of memory foam. There were lots of blankets, not down comforters.

The big windows have nice views of the landscape, river and mountains nearby.

Riverstone Cabin is located at the confluence of the Methow River, where it splits around a small island. The cabin is located on an elbow of land, that curves the river around it, therefore you look up the river into the North Cascades.
