About the property

1 large bedroom, 1 small bedroom w/twinbed, 1 bath, close to everything in Marfa

This adobe home is 1300 sq.feet. It has one master bedroom, a room with a single bed and one big bathroom.. The home sits on two lots, has covered parking and a giant fenced in backyard. The kitchen and dining areas are spacious, beautifully lit with natural light. and very well furnished with modern appliances and a big dining table. it's set up for serious cooking. it's in a nice quiet neighborhood and a great place to look at the stars on a clear night.

It is an active residence for me, so it definitely has some personality.

There's a lot of music, books, a piano, a telescope and all kinds of odds and

It's always equipped with clean linens, towels, dishes and vacuumed floors.

There is a caretaker who looks after the place and the cleaning.

About Jud

I am a guitar player who lives in Austin and Marfa. I've been lucky to play with a lot of great songwriters and bands over the past few decades. I've spent a lot of years touring and on the move.

Jud purchased this house in 2013

Why Jud chose Big Bend Country

Over the years I've realized that the far west region of Texas is where I hope to live full time. This home came into my life through some good friends and it's one of the happiest places i know. This area is one of the most inspiring places I have ever been. I hope you find as much peace and rejuvenation here as I have.

What makes this house unique

I loved this place the minute I walked in it. The adobe walls, the morning light coming through the dining room windows, the cool fresh air and the quiet. It's also a twenty minute walk to downtown Marfa.

The property is an adobe-type structure with low ceilings and small rooms. The house itself is okay but we were very disappointed in the general cleanliness and upkeep of the place. Several light bulbs were out (and we could not find any replacement bulbs), the stereo was broken - but the biggest thing was the overall cleanliness of the place. It was dirty, with lots of cobwebs in the windows and corners. It did not look like the place had had a thorough cleaning in a very long time. The bedding had old flannel sheets and a weird assortment of foam pillows; and there were only 2 (again, old) bath towels in the bathroom. There was no soap in the bathroom sink. We found a large bar of soap in the bathroom closet that had been partially eaten by a rodent of some kind. The back yard is completely unusable. It is an overgrown mass of weeds, and a note in the house left by the owner warns not to go out there because of an infestation of "goat heads" that have spiny, prickly burs. One of the reasons we picked this property was so we could bring our dog, and the yard was completely unusable. In fact, we were so disappointed we cut our stay short and left after the second night. I hate to have to write a review like this. The owner was responsive to my emails prior to our arrival and seemed like a nice guy. And with the proper amount of cleaning and upkeep, this place could be okay. But I felt compelled to write this as I wish we had known these things before spending as much money as we did.

great base for Marfa stay

  • 5 of 5

We spent four night's at Jud's comfortable and convenient house, and would happily return. For evenings in, Jud has a wonderfully eclectic collection of music on vinyl and CD, and we were delighted to find some of our favorite books of poetry on his shelves. His video collection is great, too, especially for people with Marxist leanings (Groucho, that is).

Good location, great price, nice record and dvd collections

  • 4 of 5

We had a great visit to West Texas. The house was cozy and served all of our needs. We enjoyed listening to some records, and were pleased to see the dvd collection included all of the same Marx Bros. movies our 10-year-old son had brought on our trip for the car ride (not to mention the impressive number of Woody Allen films). The bathroom door was a little tricky for the kids and we could have done with a couple more towels, but otherwise we were pleased with the house. Thanks for having us!

Car: recommended

Marfa is a one of a kind town. It's a peaceful West Texas getaway, with a high desert climate. There are numerous art galleries, fantastic restaurants and food trailers, great bars, one of the best book stores in the state and it's all easily experienced by walking or biking from this location. On a clear night there's a good chance you will see more stars than you ever have.
