Let the robins usher in the new day! Smell the ripe moss and fern forest that envelope this eco-hip, smartly refurbished 70's A-frame. We took a perfectly good four bedroom cabin and ripped all the interior walls out to construct this diamond in the wilderness.
The Jim Jack Shack is the more grown up, citified version of The Mt Baker Birdhouse (vrbo 348877) and is located within throwing distance, making them the perfect compliment to each other. Rent the lower house for the kids!
The Jim Jack Shack has been an outlet for our artistic side. Everything here is the culmination of hard work, ingenuity and long weekends by both of us. It has all new appliances, the kitchen is fully stocked with all your cooking needs. There is a nice coffee maker and blade grinder onsite.
Built for utilitarian comfort out of as much reclaimed and recycled material as possible, the Jim Jack Shack is also super insulated. You will be amazed at the quiet. Try it! You will like it!
My wife and I live in Bellingam, Wa. with our young daughter and two ornery dogs. We like to spend our time looking for cool, eclectic homes to rent around the world! Although mostly we just stay home and try to raise our daughter the best we can.

The Jim Jack Shack is the second vacation cabin to be rebuilt by us. Seven long years in the making, we are proud of what we have created, and hope that others enjoy them as much as we certainly do. Located on the edge of the Mt. Baker National Forest, the view out the back entrances. Towering cedars and hemlocks, enormous ferns and moss covered boulders, the serenity is un-equaled.
This is not your run-of-the-mill cabin. We site-built everything possible and re-used old material when aesthetically permittable. The views are completely private and territorial. Look out the window, any window, and your eyes will feast upon delights of the North Cascades. Sword ferns, Western Red Cedar trees, moss galore, Maples and mushrooms. Come for the cabin, you will return for the view (and the cabin). Need some peace and quiet? This is the place. The roof and walls are crazy-insulated, hardly a peep can be heard of what little traffic there is. Stare out the window. It is like Planet Earth on mute. Create your own sound track.
your home with us! We've been living in Seattle for three years, but had never visited this area before. We've been missing out and certainly plan to be back. Thanks!
We stayed at the Jim Jack shack over New Years and it was the perfect spot for us to head up to the mountain the next couple days. It only took us 30-35 minutes to get to Mt Baker and coming home after a day of skiing to soak in the hot tub was perfect. As others have mentioned the light switches are a little odd but definitely nothing to worry about. The cabin is a little quirky which we liked. Also be prepared for some steep stairs if you want to go into the loft, might not be ideal for small children or elderly adults due to the stairs. The only suggestion I would give to the owners is to make sure the salt bucket is full in the winter. When we got there it only had a very small amount left. I would highly recommend this cabin to couples wanting to stay close to Mt. Baker or those looking for a relaxing getaway.
Everything was great. Place is amazing, quiet, surrounded by tall fir trees. The house was even more spacious than we expected. Everything worked as promised (i.e. hot tub, fire place) and hosts were easy to reach in case of concerns. I've rented a different cabin in this area, as well as considered another one for this season, but this particular one is actually a way better deal than others.
The stay here was fantastic. The house was beautiful--even better than the photos could have shown. They have taken great care in making an excellent home here. All of my communication with the hosts was prompt and kind. I look forward to staying here again (which is quite rare for me as I like to find new places.) I just loved it so much! Also, there is a trail just about across the street that crosses streams and ends with the most beautiful view of a glacier! (Heliotrope trail). I recommend this place very highly!
My wife and I went here in August and wanted to get away from everything. The Jim Jack Shack fit the bill to a T. The pictures don't quite do the cabin justice; it's stunning. The furniture is all very comfortable, showers have good pressure and heat, heated floors in the entryway and bathroom are nice. The bed upstairs is amazing. We slept like a rock. The back porch looks out into the forest. The community itself is pretty nice...very family oriented with a community pool, tennis and basketball courts, and a playground. It's also right on the edge of the national forest, which has loads of hiking opportunities.
Be advised the closest big city is Bellingham, which is maybe 45 minutes away. If you're flying into SeaTac, it's a 2.5 hour drive to the cabin. Also, if you like to cook, as we do, the pantry items are very limited. In addition to our meal stuffs, we had to get olive oil, pepper, and a few other "essentials" (foil, plastic bags...). That being said, the kitchen is nice and has a dishwasher. The one other minor quibble is playing the guessing game with the light switches. Some work, others don't. Some you flip up to turn the lights on, others down. Make sure you follow the directions sent to you. The town of Glacier is super tiny (~200 residents), and the nearest gas station is maybe 15 minutes away.
If you're looking to getaway, this is it. My wife and I are already looking forward to coming back.
The house has the most amazing hot tub in the trees. Bathroom fixtures awesome along with heated floors. The most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. Lots of comfy places to sit. Excellent summer location for lots of great hiking on the west side of the cascades. We wished the eating table had been on the first floor, and stairs to third level were hard to navigate. It's really a couple's house-- one couple. With a small child would be ok but with stairs a toddler would be challenging. Very romantic for a couple. Kitchen could use a few more bowls and utensils. Appliances generally great. Wifi worked perfectly. Bottom line is that with all the little quirks I just listed, this is one of the best VRBO houses we've ever stayed at.
My boyfriend and I stayed here for a weekend in March while we went snowboarding at Mt. Baker. It is overall a wonderful cabin for a romantic 2 person stay. Beth and Eli provide clear directions for getting there, check in, and check out, so the process is easy.
The cabin is quickly warmed by the fireplace heater, which is easy to use with a remote. We loved the heated floors in the bathrooms, of course, along with the big windows looking out into the trees. We didn't have any concerns about people seeing us with the lack of window coverings, and it was lovely to wake up each morning to the view out into the woods. There is no cell service or internet, but that is nice for an escape from city life. The hot tub is wonderful as well. Our only concern was finding that shampoo and body wash were not provided, so it is important to note that you should bring these with you or buy them at the local store as we did.
Finally, we would like to heartily recommend eating at Milano's if you want to eat out one night. We expected pretty average Italian food in a casual setting. While it was a casual setting (which is great coming back from time adventuring outside), the food was excellent, not merely average. It was not very pricey but 5-star quality, with a great beer and wine selection.
The Jim Jack Shack is an attraction in and of itself. But if you must leave the cabin, there are plenty of things to do, year round. Some of the favorites of our family include, but are not limited to: Skiing, hiking, picking mushrooms, riding bikes, picking blueberries, sitting at the bar at Grahams, disc golf, jogging on logging roads, bragging about our ski day, watching baby splash in the pool, watching baby do anything.

Priority is given to longer rentals; we take two night rental reservations for only the next thirty days. Exceptions may be made, and are done so only by the owners! Likely reasons for exceptions: 1. If your check-in date is the same as the check-out date of the previous guest. 2. If your check-out date is the same as the next guest. 3. If you want a mid-week rental, and it is the slow season. One can view all our reservations by clicking the "flexible dates" box.
All major holidays also require a three night stay. Please, just come for three nights.
Once we have received your payment, you will be sent directions and check-in information. If you have any questions, never fear, we will answer them promptly, and in exacting detail. Just don't call before coffee.
