Romantic, Restored 1945, Bass Lake Cottage amid Flowering Gardens and Fountain

Bedrooms 1
Space 800 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Small cottage for 2 adults only. 1 mile to Bass Lake & 23 miles to Yosemite.

Relax and reconnect with your sweetheart! Stay in a restored, 1945, cottage that sits on 9 acres of forest. Sleep in a luxurious, king-size bed and wake to sounds of birds singing in a bubbling fountain. Sip coffee and view distant, granite peaks from a deck surrounded by flowering gardens. See deer and wild turkey stroll by. Spend your days exploring Yosemite & Bass Lake. Post pictures or stream movies with dedicated Wifi and Apple TV. Feel comfy with a new Fujitsu, HVAC unit. Sit on a moonlit deck while frogs serenade you. Share stories and plan tomorrow's adventures. Make life-long memories here. Here in my beloved, childhood home.

Cottage interior: This 800-square-foot cottage was hand-built in 1945 by the previous owner who worked at the North Fork Mill. My parents spent many years upgrading it. Interior walls were removed so the sleeping area, sitting area, and kitchenette are in one, large open space. French doors open to a small deck with Woodard patio furniture. It feels especially cozy on winter nights when the woods fill with snow. There is a newly, installed Fujitsu unit that provides heating and air-conditioning, so you'll feel comfortable. Kitchenette has a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and toaster oven. It is designed to prepare light meals only --like you would in a hotel suite. I love the box windows and polished, copper sink from Mexico. A carved, teak armoire houses the Apple TV and Blu-Ray, DVD player. There are all kinds of small touches that make this feel like a place that is well-cared for and loved. The king-size bed is very supportive and has nice linens. The second room in the cottage is large. It contains a full-size bed, laundry area, and bathroom. The bathroom is unusual as the shower is small and the toilet sits in a large closet --think of an indoor, outhouse, in light, yellow paint :-)! Both are super tidy as the toilet is new and the shower is freshly tiled.

Interaction with Guests: I sincerely wish I could greet you and thank you for choosing my family home for your trip. I could never keep this place without your kindness and support. However, I live in Southern California, so my onsite hosts (who live 1/4 mile away) are available if you need anything!

Forest Setting: Nine-acre property backs to open forest and has no neighbors. Cottage feels secluded and is located with another, larger cabin. That larger cabin may be rented by another guest during your stay. You are looking at the cottage.

Location: The cottage is one mile from the Bass Lake Boat Launch; 1.5 miles from Miller's Landing Resort; and 23 miles from the entrance to Yosemite National Park and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.

About Leah

I am a mother of eight-year-old twins and an economics professor. I enjoy learning new things and meeting new people. I love hiking in the Sierras with my friends and family. Just looking at maps of Bass Lake, Yosemite, and the Eastern Sierra makes me smile. My favorite poet is Robert Frost. I listen to alternative and classic rock. Watching Vikings is my guilty pleasure.

I went to school at UC Santa Cruz and UW Madison. I work at Cal State Northridge and live near Agoura Hills in Southern California.

Leah purchased this cottage in 1966

Why Leah chose Wishon

This is my childhood home. It has been in my family for the past 50 years. The property has only been sold once. The original owner worked at the North Fork Mill and hand-built these two houses in the 1940s. He lived in the cottage while building the cabin. My parents spent many years upgrading the cabins and landscaping the property. I miss them and wish they could see how much their grandchildren enjoy this place. I love the home and this area. It has been an incredible blessing to take my children to the same places where I played, hiked, and swam as a child! I owe a debt of gratitude to my guests as they help me keep this place.

What makes this cottage unique

The cabins really have their own personality. The wood walls are so warm and inviting. Sitting on the deck is a perfect way to start or end your day. I love to watch birds singing and bathing in the fountain; to look at the Peckinpah Mountain range at sunset; and to see the Milky Way framed by towering ponderosa pines at night. The property is so quiet and peaceful --allowing you to really relax and sleep soundly at night.

Beautiful and homey cabin😊

  • 5 of 5

We loved this cabin, very private and clean. The beds were comfortable and the layout of the cabin was perfect. Loved having coffee on the deck, enjoyed the peaceful setting. The deer visited twice in 1 week. Would love to come back, hopefully I will. The helpful list of things to do was an added benefit. Thanks soo much😊

Surpassed expectations. The small cottage was not small at all. It was extremely comfortable and quiet. Clean inside and out. Plenty of amenities. Beautiful landscaping and scenic view off the front deck. Will definitely return and recommend to others.

Cute, quaint, comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I spent a week in this cottage and it was the perfect home away from home for us! It was extremely cozy and had a ton of amenities as listed- TV, washer, dryer, electric skillet (we used this almost every morning and night!), shower, etc. Leah responded quickly and the neighbors were super friendly but not at all intrusive. It is a quite of a bit of a drive to get out of the lake (15-20 minute drive to the closest town, Oakhurst) and Yosemite but granted, we were there when a major road was closed which would have saved us about an hour to the National Park. If we find our way back into the area again, we will definitely be coming back to stay in this cottage :)

Yosemite Trip

  • 4 of 5

Very clean and just as described. The drive to Yosemite was a bit loner than expected (about 1.5-2 hours to the valley) but given the costs and crowds to stay in the park the drive was well worth it!

Totally unexpected

  • 5 of 5

The cottage, its owner, and the nearby hosts provided a perfect blend of welcoming warmth and attention to detail. I decided to take a break on short notice prior to going backpacking in the mountains above Bass Lake. The booking was easy and immediate. The property is large with a feeling of remoteness from traffic and crowds. All the small stuff I forgot to bring was on hand at the cottage, adding to a homey feeling. It says "no kitchen" but I found a beautifully appointed area for meal preparation, down to a hot water appliance for tea. The market close by in North Fork sells fresh produce and a little of everything. I will definitely plan ahead for a longer stay next time.

Sunset Magazine named Bass Lake as one of 'The West's Best Lakes.' It is a wonderful lake for swimming, boating, fishing, and water skiing. Yosemite has world-class waterfalls, granite domes, and hiking. The Sierra Scenic Byway is a beautiful and rugged wilderness area to explore, especially if you have a four-wheel drive vehicle.
