About the property

5 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom, a couple of blocks from town

Become a part of the Saugatuck community in this spacious home. The convenient in-town location is a great place to gather after a fun day spent exploring the area. Located just two blocks from the main downtown of Saugatuck and across the street from Willow Park and the Kalamazoo River, it’s easy for everyone in your group to branch out on their own.

Two separate wings of the house divide the five bedrooms, offering lots of privacy for various group arrangements. The east wing accommodates the master bedroom which has a Queen Bed. The second and third bedrooms each have a Double Bed. The full bath on this wing offers a tub/shower combination. The west wing has one bedroom with two Twin Beds and another with a Double Bed. The spacious full bath on this side has a Jacuzzi tub and separate stall shower.

The colorful vaulted living room with a gas fireplace and flat screen TV/DVD provides plenty of space to relax after a long day. A separate dining area and game room offers comfortable seating for six with room to squeeze in a few more.

Not quite ready to come inside? The multi-level large wrap-around deck offers extra seating and two additional outdoor dining areas. Drop the blinds for some extra privacy and you have your own outdoor oasis.

The galley kitchen offers all your modern conveniences for preparing a meal to fuel your group for the day. The Weber gas grill on the deck is a welcome addition when dining al fresco.

Forget about your car at the end of the day as all shopping and dining is just a short stroll away. A short 5-7 minute drive will get you to immaculate Douglas Beach and world-famous Oval Beach. For the more adventurous, hop on the Chain Ferry just down the street (feet, strollers, bikes and dogs allowed). Climb the steps at Mount Baldhead for amazing views of the harbor or Lake Michigan. Continue on just a bit and you’re at the beach!

About Barry Chesterman

We're a family of six (plus one golden retriever) with deep roots in Michigan. We live in the Detroit metropolitan area, and break away to the beaches of Michigan every chance we get.

Barry Chesterman purchased this house in 2011

Why Barry Chesterman chose Southwest

We bought this vacation home because we love the west side of the state - and Saugatuck in particular, having visited many times over the years. An added bonus to Saugatuck is its location, equidistant to Detroit (where most of the family lives) and Chicago (where our oldest son now resides).

We have spent the past two years updating the house, creating a real family home. We love spending time there and hope you will too!

What makes this house unique

Blue-By-You is in a perfect location; town is just a short stroll - yet just far enough that you still have privacy at the height of the summer season. The blinds on the front deck allow for complete privacy as you relax on the spacious outdoor sitting area. Don't forget your camping hammock - you can hang it between the two large trees on the front lawn.

Five bedrooms, what a luxury - no more than two to a bedroom and you have plenty of room for 10.

Located just around the corner, the Chain Ferry is a great way to cross the river and get to the beach by foot -if you don't mind climbing a couple hundred steps and running down the sand dunes. If you prefer to drive, Douglas Beach and Oval Beach are only minutes away.

We love our house, and are thrilled to be able to share it with you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This house is in a great location and has everything a [large] family needs. We were able to enjoy walks into town. Great dinners on the grill. Relaxing and gathering in the family room.

Looking forward to visiting again.

Nice location, comfortable bedrooms, but small kitchen and deck in poor shape

  • 4 of 5

The 5 comfortable bedrooms and 2 baths were fine for our family. The kitchen is very compact (think galley of a boat) so the nice outdoor grill came in handy. And the second hangout space with TV is the dining room, so we all congregated in the living room. As for electronics, there was a ROKU, but no remote so my son rigged the TV to his computer to use our account. Also, the cable channels are extremely limited (MSMBC was the only news channel and PBS the only source of children's shows for our 3 year old). Hopefully the owners will upgrade their cable package soon.

There was only one sunstantial deficiency with this property, thus a less than stellar rating. Unfortunately, the large front deck was not in great repair nor was it clean when we arrived. We had planned a party for family in town for a wedding, so with the help of a hose and sprayer (provided by the home owner), I was able to do my own power washing prior to guests arriving. I'm sure the homeowners, who had maintained the inside to very nice standards, will think about resurfacing the deck and painting the deck trim in the near future to continue those standards outside.

On a "beyond anyone's control" note, our family party coincided with the neighboring cottonwood trees raining down their cotton fluff (in great abundance!) so we were treated to cotton snow in large drifts for several days. Beautiful to look at as long as you covered your drinks and food and kept the screen s closed! Mother Nature, not the homeowners, was in charge of that spectical!!

Overall it was a very nice week with a view of the water from the front part of the deck. Unfortunately for my son who took his hammock, there was no longer a pair of trees in the front yard to string the hammock between as shown on the website. That would have been a nice place for him to hang out during the cool, dry weather --- the very best part of a Michigan vacation for us Southerners!

Owner's Response: Lynn, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay, and if you return next year you can expect some changes! We did get city permission to upgrade the deck, and will be completing it later this year. I do apologize for the cleanliness of the deck on the day of your arrival, it definitely should have been cleaned in preparation for your arrival, and we will be letting our local manager know about this. Unfortunately the cottonwood did continue to "rain" on your throughout your stay, and as you stated, we do not have control over mother nature. If the tree were on our property we would have removed it by now, since is is such a nuisance for about 1 week in the spring. Sadly one of the trees which supported the hammock got sick and had to be removed - perhaps we should remove that photo from our listing site... but we love the picture of our son from all those years ago. Regarding TV stations, it is possibly you didn't scroll-up to Channel 299 which is where HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax, all part of the cable package, start. Each also comes with on-demand selections. That may have provided more entertainment for your toddler. I will double check that this information is in the renter Welcome Package. It was a pleasure having you, and we hope you'll come back to Saugatuck soon. Best regards Barry

Extremely pleasant experience, perfect for girl's weekend

  • 5 of 5

4 friends and I had a great weekend in Saugatuck. The property was perfect for our needs with 5 separate bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 2 common areas for conversation and activities. Relaxing in the afternoons/evenings with wine & cheese, and quick morning breakfasts with coffee & bagels were possible and easy with full kitchen amenities. Very clean and welcoming; within walking distance to lovely downtown shopping and dining. We will definitely consider this property again for future weekends. Consistent communication provided by owner made checkin/checkout easy. Highly recommended.

Comfy Family Vacation House

  • 4 of 5

We were very pleased with this house. It was clean and comfortable and we enjoyed the BBQ and the easy access to town. For others who visit here I would recommend taking the paddleboat ferry out onto the lake. It was one of the best things we did. What we didn't bargain on were the mosquitos! Bring repellant : ) especially if you like to sit outside to enjoy your meals. The outside dining area was really delightful. The hosts were very sweet and I highly recommend them and their home.

PRIME LOCATION!!

  • 5 of 5

This house was impeccably clean. Very quaint with all the amenities. Barry really has an attention for detail from specifics about the house to dining and activities around Saugatuck. The house is tucked away on a street with beautiful views. It's a minute walk to the water, boat and jet ski rentals and a two minute walk from shops and restaurants...this really is a prime location! There was ample room for eight adults and every bed was comfortable. Love this place!!
