About Fred or Elizabeth Avett
This house has been in the Avett Family since 1959. It has been a gathering place for all of our family all of these years. Thank goodness 'walls can't talk!' When our Aunt Martha wanted to lessen her responsibilities, we were thrilled to continue the family ownership and take it under our care. Family gatherings in the summer and fall continue and we , obviously, share the house with others when we can't be there. We have vacationers who now are our long distance friends who have been coming to the house every summer for 20 to 33 years! REALLY!! We hope you will find it to be the perfect retreat from the 'real world' as we all do!
Fred or Elizabeth Avett purchased this House in 1979
Why Fred or Elizabeth Avett chose Lake Junaluska
You will enjoy the charm of a house that was built in 1917 with its stone fireplaces, warm woodwork, clawfoot tubs, high ceilings, eclectic furnishings and sturdiness of construction. We have worked to provide modern comforts and conveniences while preserving its' past. (We even have a brand new washer/dryer and sparkling new refrigerator!) We think your group will find it comfortable and intriguing! The children love to play hide and seek in all of its' nooks and crannies. It is the perfect family reunion space as well as being ideal for any gathering of friends who want to renew friendships. There's plenty of room to gather OR spread out for privacy. Our rental history underscores this! Downstairs bath is completely remodeled and you will be connected to Wifi everywhere!!
What makes this House unique
You will be in the middle of all of Lake Junaluska activities should you wish to take advantage of those. Day trips to traditional Western NC sites are easily done. If you don't want to cook, there are tons of restaurants close, close by. Childcare is available at the Children's center until Labor Day. Swimming, putt-putt, tennis, shuffleboard, paddleboats, canoes, walking path around the lake, golfing, even a basketball court...all available 'on the grounds' of the Lake. Defintely a wonderful secret to discover for your vacation!!
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Historic House Was Perfect
We returned to Lake Junaluska after 18 years and the Avett House had always caught our eye in past visits because of its proximity to activities at the Assembly. The home has a historic charm that has held up well through the years and nicely accommodated our 19 member family group of 10 adults and 9 children. We used it as a base for our various activities in the area such as rafting, tubing and exploring the nearby national forests. The kitchen has been modernized as well as the baths, but not to the point of taking away from the home's overall appearance. We hardly noticed that there was no A/C as the days were moderate and the nights were cool. We opened windows and used the many available fans. The most used and attractive part of the house was the front porch where we could always find a family member relaxing and taking in the view. We even had a skunk visit us on the porch one evening which cleared everyone out very quickly. Luckily we made it to safety just fine and the critter wandered off into the night a few minutes later. We had excellent communication with the Avetts from our initial booking in summer of 2018. They answered our questions and even provided us with pre-arrival information about the various upcoming activities at Lake Junaluska. We would highly recommend the Avett House.
The View from the Porch
The owners, the Avetts, did an excellent job communicating with us on the payments for, the use of , and questions about the property. The view from the front porch was super, and we did see the eagle(s) flying across the lake on several occasions. The location of the property is great, right between the aquatic activities and the bookstore/Stuart auditorium. The pool was great for the young children, and the older kids really enjoyed the paddle boards, kayaks and canoes and also corn hole games on the side lawn. We especially enjoyed the 2.3 mile walk around the lake and the location of Lake Junaluska to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, especially the Cataloochee Valley and Big Creek areas. But the best part was sitting in the front porch reading or talking with family members.
Thank you for your kind review! The best part of it is knowing that your family had a wonderful week of memory-making! Working with you to prepare for the week was most enjoyable. We send thanks to you for selecting our house, for being kind to it and for enjoying it as "home" for the week! We hope you rock on our porch again!
Best wishes for a good remainder of the summer! The Avetts
Best Vacation with the Family
My family and I have been going to Lake Junaluska since 1981. I wanted to celebrate our parents 50 years of marriage, so my brothers, their families, my parents and my family, all 17 of us, wanted to stay at the Avett house. My parents had always said that one day they would stay there. It is in the perfect location!
Communication with the owners was quick and easy.
Mrs. Avett answered all my questions, which helped me prepare for the vacation.
Some of the family was worried about the house not having AC but, I promise it was not an issue! There are plenty of fans and an attic fan, We would all talk in the morning about getting cold during the night.
There was plenty of room for all of us to spread out. The kids, ages 20, 18, 16, 10, 9, and 8, never once said they were bored.
Overall, I give this vacation a 10!
Thank you so much for your kind words! We are delighted that we could provide a suitable, happy place for your family gathering!
Working with you was a pleasure. Now that you are all official "527 Porchers," we hope you will gather your family again under our roof!
Good wishes sent your way,
We enjoyed the historical home. It was clean.
The property was on a hill with 36 steps. The view was beautiful. There was a great breeze the weather was great. The owners were good about getting back to us with our questions via email.
How kind of you to share your thoughts about your stay in our house. Thank you!
For those future guests who may not want to get the exercise that those 36 steps provide(!), the driveway leads to a parking area that puts you only two steps to climb to be in the house!! The parking lot has room for 4-5 cars.
We do try our best to be accessible to anyone enjoying our house. Always want our phone number and email to be available!
Thanks again for your review that we know will be helpful to others. So glad your extended stay was enjoyable!!
Amazing week in paradise.
Our family of 13 spent a wonderful week in the Avett house at Lake Junaluska June 5-11, 2016. The location was out of this world overlooking beautiful lake Junaluska right across the street from the rose path. Our family has attended Holston annual conference for over 30 years at Lake Junaluska and have many wonderful memories. This house was ideal for our entire family to be together to make new memories and remember the years we had spent in this lovely retreat area. The house is a huge old rustic home full of room and history. The temperature in the home was always comfortable even tho it had no air-conditioning. All rooms have ceiling fans and we also had an attic fan available. If your looking for a modern fancy hotel this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for a beautiful rustic home full of room and history then this is the place for you and your family. The owners went out of their way to accommodate our every need. Thanks again to Fred and Elizabeth for sharing your home with our family for this very special week. God bless.
We were honored to be the place you selected to spend that most precious time together. That families or other groups can enjoy the atmosphere we have created and make lasting happy memories here, makes our preparation worthwhile! Thank you for sharing your kind thoughts for future guests to read.
Spacious, sturdy home with a wonderful atmosphere
Our large family tumbled into this roomy, airy place and instantly felt at home. The house is about as old the camp, so it felt like we were living in a bit history. The location is perfect-- lake view, easy walk to the pool, to ice cream cones, and the path around the lake, which is just outside the door. The new washer and dryer were very convenient. We were there during a particularly hot spell, but most of us didn't feel the need for A/C. The fresh air blowing through the charming screened-in windows and doors was a pleasure. The WiFi was fast and we're all better off without a TV. No one missed it. How could you, with enough porch rocking chairs for everyone?
Thank you for your kind words! We are delighted that you had a good stay and, obviously, captured the spirit of Lake Junaluska! We hope your visit here will bring you back to the area in the vacations ahead for your family!

Gatlinburg with all of its' attractions could be an easy day trip.
