About Fred or Elizabeth Avett

This house has been in the Avett Family since 1959. It has been a gathering place for all of our family all of these years. Thank goodness 'walls can't talk!' When our Aunt Martha wanted to lessen her responsibilities, we were thrilled to continue the family ownership and take it under our care. Family gatherings in the summer and fall continue and we , obviously, share the house with others when we can't be there. We have vacationers who now are our long distance friends who have been coming to the house every summer for 20 to 33 years! REALLY!!

We hope you will find it to be the perfect retreat from the 'real world' as we all do!

Fred or Elizabeth Avett purchased this house in 1979

Why Fred or Elizabeth Avett chose Lake Junaluska

You will enjoy the charm of a house that was built in 1917 with its stone fireplaces, warm woodwork, clawfoot tubs, high ceilings, eclectic furnishings and sturdiness of construction. We have worked to provide modern comforts and conveniences while preserving its' past. (We even have a brand new washer/dryer and sparkling new refrigerator!) We think your group will find it comfortable and intriguing! The children love to play hide and seek in all of its' nooks and crannies.

It is the perfect family reunion space as well as being ideal for any gathering of friends who want to renew friendships. There's plenty of room to gather OR spread out for privacy. Our rental history underscores this! Downstairs bath is completely remodeled and you will be connected to Wifi everywhere!!

What makes this house unique

You will be in the middle of all of Lake Junaluska activities should you wish to take advantage of those.

Day trips to traditional Western NC sites are easily done. If you don't want to cook, there are tons of restaurants close, close by. Childcare is available at the Children's center until Labor Day. Swimming, putt-putt, tennis, shuffleboard, paddleboats, canoes, walking path around the lake, golfing, even a basketball court...all available 'on the grounds' of the Lake.

Defintely a wonderful secret to discover for your vacation!!

Owner's Response: How kind of you to share your thoughts about your stay in our house. Thank you! For those future guests who may not want to get the exercise that those 36 steps provide(!), the driveway leads to a parking area that puts you only two steps to climb to be in the house!! The parking lot has room for 4-5 cars. We do try our best to be accessible to anyone enjoying our house. Always want our phone number and email to be available! Thanks again for your review that we know will be helpful to others. So glad your extended stay was enjoyable!!

Amazing week in paradise.

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 13 spent a wonderful week in the Avett house at Lake Junaluska June 5-11, 2016. The location was out of this world overlooking beautiful lake Junaluska right across the street from the rose path. Our family has attended Holston annual conference for over 30 years at Lake Junaluska and have many wonderful memories. This house was ideal for our entire family to be together to make new memories and remember the years we had spent in this lovely retreat area. The house is a huge old rustic home full of room and history. The temperature in the home was always comfortable even tho it had no air-conditioning. All rooms have ceiling fans and we also had an attic fan available. If your looking for a modern fancy hotel this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for a beautiful rustic home full of room and history then this is the place for you and your family. The owners went out of their way to accommodate our every need. Thanks again to Fred and Elizabeth for sharing your home with our family for this very special week. God bless.

Spacious, sturdy home with a wonderful atmosphere

  • 5 of 5

Our large family tumbled into this roomy, airy place and instantly felt at home. The house is about as old the camp, so it felt like we were living in a bit history. The location is perfect-- lake view, easy walk to the pool, to ice cream cones, and the path around the lake, which is just outside the door. The new washer and dryer were very convenient. We were there during a particularly hot spell, but most of us didn't feel the need for A/C. The fresh air blowing through the charming screened-in windows and doors was a pleasure. The WiFi was fast and we're all better off without a TV. No one missed it. How could you, with enough porch rocking chairs for everyone?

Great Family Getaway Home!

  • 5 of 5

Our extended family stayed for the week and loved the home! We head to Junaluska every year, but this was our first year staying at this home. The home itself was comfy and inviting. The furniture and layout of the space was great for a big family as we were all able to fit around the large dining table while the kids dined on the spacious front porch. All of the beds were comfy and we slept well with the windows open and box fans provided for each room.

The only downside to this home was that it lacked some of the "modern amenities" such as air conditioning, washer/dryer and a dishwasher. However, with the cool breezes from off the lake, we didn't actually need the air conditioning! Then again, if you are looking for a modern vacation with all of the bells and whistles of luxury living, Lake Junaluska may not quite be up to speed. (That's the appeal!!)

The best part was being able to spend hours on the front porch reading and talking with family. We also had the best seat ever for watching the fireworks, parade and the ski show!

Rock on!

  • 5 of 5

Remember visiting your favorite cousin in the summertime? You walked in and felt right at home. It’s about like that at the Avett House at Junaluska.

Casual. Roomy. Tasteful but not fussy. Lots of communal spaces downstairs, but privacy not a problem. Kitchen is small enough for early risers, and launching the not-always-quiet kids with cereal, but capable of family sized production for the big dinner table.

Basic support retail nearby. Waynesville shopping and dinner options are many. Gotta love the dedicated lake loopers who emerge as early as sunrise for the 45 minute circuit. Pick your calendar right and you can watch them still going as the moon rises over the quiet lake.

Be prepared to sharpen your rocking chair skills!

Just Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We have spent time at this lovely home on several occasions, and it is without a doubt one of the most restful vacations of the year! Early Fall is our favorite time. Hiking opportunities are abundant, and the fall colors are beautiful. The Waynesville Farmers Market is also something we look forward to. Everything needed is there, with the most important being peace and quiet. Sitting on the front porch is just incomparable. Perfect place for reading, rocking and snoozing. We'll definitely be back.
