About nan richardson

My husband and I built this house just before the birth of our first child. (Her brother came along two years later.) We built it well, with the finest materials, to last for our lifetime and theirs. It was big to start with but, well, the exhilaration of our friends who came to stay and thought it so fantastic got my husband a little excited and he 'added on' in true Vermont fashion with a 1000-foot master suite a few years later. We spend every Thanksgiving and Christmas there and a chunk of summer, and during ski season vacations, and also try to get up for sugaring late March, or the opening of fishing season in April and for garden weekend in June, when we plant and weed our vegetables. In other words, any time we can! Every part of the year is special and beautiful and maybe, someday soon, we will just be there forever. The dream of Vermont keeps us happy in our urban life on the waterfront of Brooklyn!

nan richardson purchased this estate in 2001

Why nan richardson chose Vermont

The house has a special relation with the outdoors- the many large windows make you feel like you are walking into nature at all times, connected to the landscape. It has the MOST spectacular vista, 180 degree views out 80 miles over 3 ranges, and to watch a summer electric storm coming towards you from the west is one of God's great cinematic creations. It doesn't get any more beautiful than this. The inside is both comfy and elegant, filled with rather gorgeous or just cool things collected in our travels, and plenty of books and music. The sauna after a day in the snow is so healing (makes your muscles feel so pampered and relaxed) and the summer walks on all our miles of trails and swimming, kayaking or fishing in the ponds, a huge trampoline and tightrope line for the kids etc, make for endless fun.

What makes this estate unique

It's large but cosy; it is opulent but comfortable; it has all you need but a beautifully edited selection of it.

It's a very nice house, created to be livable, not stuffy. Can be combined with our farmhouse (sleeps 8 but rented through AUGUST 2017) , or coming in Fall 2016, my brother and sister-in-law's sweet one-room schoolhouse (sleeps 4), also down the road.

A luxury Vermont retreat - you may never want to leave....

We spent a long weekend at this perfectly appointed country home in rural Vermont, and absolutely LOVED it. The house is furnished with beautiful antiques in a picturesque location with gorgeous views and lots of privacy. A perfect getaway!

Large and light filled rooms with privacy for all with spacious gathering spaces.

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 15 (8 adults and 7 children) stayed a week in July. There was plenty to do with lovely views and space to just relax and read or talk. The pond is delightful for swimming and there are lots of other swimming options within 20 minutes. Canada is 15 minutes away and we made several trips to Granby, Magag and Bromont along with a visit to the Lavender Farm. The house is very comfortable and elegantly furnished. One feels immersed in natural beauty and creative art. We were together as much as we wanted and yet alone when we needed to be. I would go again! Thank you Nan!

Beautiful stay in bucolic Northern Kingdom

  • 5 of 5

This house is incredible: immaculately furnished, high ceilings, comfortable deep couches, beautiful Moroccan rugs, a sauna in the basement, and to top it off it's close to Burke Mountain Resort for skiing. We woke up to panoramic views every morning, reading books and watching movies by the fireplace(s) and then going on scenic drives of the area. Couldn't recommend this place more. I look forward to coming back later this year and possibly again next winter!

Incredible!

  • 5 of 5

A luxurious stay. We LOVE this house and didn’t want to leave. The home has three living levels, and all rooms have mountain views. Big wow factor. The central living room has floor-to-ceiling windows with vaulted ceilings and two large fans to keep heat or cool circulating. Absolutely beautiful mountain views. The couches are all down and comfy so we sat there each evening in front of a crackling fire, sipping cocktails, watching the sunset. Heaven. The decor is very sophisticated and elegant. Great books, great art, great objects, from a gorgeous carved goose decoy draped with amber beads to lacquered turtle shells, antique whirligigs and folk art, vintage posters and fine art photography. Lots to look at! Four rooms have private bathrooms and the other 5 share a bath- plenty of options. We had two elderly grandparents with some mobility issues and after consulting with the owner, they entered through the side door and stayed in one of the first floor bedrooms with private, low bath. The private wing had radiant floor hearing, which was amazing.

The basement is heaven for kids or teenagers- there is a separate twin bed room there with bath withwalk-in shower, a HUGE playroom with every toy imaginable- trains, trucks, dolls, stuffys, board games, a 5 foot high puppet theater the kids played with endlessly, full scale pro pingpong table, ice hockey game. And the sauna— impeccably clean and we used it every single night. Its great and fun. And feels totally fantastic after a day in the cold!

The TV room is soundproofed so the men can sit there with their football and we dont have to hear it. BIG flat screen LED TV, DVD and all the gear. Kitchen is fantastic, with a wonderful antique table that pulls out on either end to fit more people. ( We were a very large group so we had a second small round table set before the fire as well.)

The front of the house has panoramic views of a mountain range and a framed vista of Jay Peak, swimming ponds in the distance - really relaxing. In the upper floor bedrooms you feel like you are in the sky floating- literally above the tree tops.

Pretty great, in short. Relatives are booking it for next year after listening to us go on!

Teller Hill Farm is FANTASTIC!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

My family first decided to go with two other families for a winter holiday land were so glad we chose this house. We made memories (and everyone wanted to come back again- so we did --!) First, the views truly are breathtaking, unobstructed, panoramic vistas from almost every room. The house is a short drive to charming Burke Mountain's slopes (where our children learned to ski over four days!) Burke has great instructors, very family-friendly place….and it is not far from huge Jay Peak (where we went not to ski but to try the fabulous new waterpark (tropical 92 degrees inside!) and Olympic ice rinks one day when we took a day off skiing). In less then a mile there is a grocery, and we checked out the famous Parker Pie pizza ( yummy) . We asked the housekeeper (Melissa, who is lovely) to do a big shop for us prior to arriving (the owner very thoughtfully offered a shopping list of basics for 3 days of meals, all locally sourced, organic) so we could move right in and start having fun. We also asked for Melissa to come daily and clean for us and prepare lunches, which worked out very well. This home is large, but feels cosy. The main floor features a vast floor plan with sliding actual barn hardware so you can open up the kitchen/ dining room, living room. Lots of interesting details. All rooms have large stone fireplaces. Floor to ceiling French doors showcase those amazing views. It is very light filled and airy feeling. The art on the walls and the objects are tasteful and imaginative.

Downstairs in the carpeted finished basement our small people were VERY happy with all the toys provided- 10 baskets FULL of them…a keyboard, a ice hockey table, trains, dollhouses etc (and could yell and run around without bothering the older people in our group who were lounging with wine and conversation in the Great Room upstairs in front of the fire. After a day outdoors we could slip into the 7-person sauna …. or have a pre-dinner nightly tournament on the basement pingpong table- kids against grownups! We settled into a nice daily rhythm…

Get ready for a good night sleep. We actually asked about the mattresses as they were the best. The owner said the her sister is a top hotel designer and ordered them from her (secret) sources. They are SO comfortable. Linens are high quality, all cotton- duvets are on every bed plus a wool blanket. It was a very happy experience both times, winter and summer. We will be back.

Amazing home with 1st class hotel amenities

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at this immaculate and gorgeous home for a pre-holiday get-away with friends and family, all ages from all over the country. The home is spectacular! Incredible views across the Vermont landscape and all the comforts, tasteful decorating and luxuries of a 1st class hotel, but in a private home...stone fireplaces, the absolute best beds/mattresses, down pillows and duvets,, beautiful interior with floor to ceiling french doors, extraordinary antiques and art, high quality and comfortable furniture, tons of light and lots of options for different activities, including a sauna, games/ toys, ping pong table, cozy reading nooks and a chef's kitchen.

The owner could not have been more helpful. She had greats suggestions for antiquing, eating, drinking, sporting, touring as well as wonderful at-home masseuse and a daily housekeeper/cook upon request.

This property is stunning and comfortable and made for a magical experience. We will definitely return again and again in all seasons.

This is Vermonters Vermont: the wildest, most pristine part of the state. The land time forgot-- and thats the way we like it. It has more lakes per square mile than anywhere else in the state, and that means more fish, animals, birds, and all kinds of wildlife, moose included. It's the cheese capital of the state--more cheese made per capita that anywhere else. It's a place of dazzling sunsets, sweet-smelling air, and astonishing beauty. The farm-to-table revolution there never needed to happen- people have been treating the earth gently for generations and the local produce and food is delicious and honest. It is a place to leave the cares of the world far, far behind, to dream, to be calm and at peace. It's got a magic that comes dropping slow, and does a body good.
