The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Bocatura Bank is perfect for the individual interested in observing nature. The baby hummingbirds, 4'-5' iquana, quash... a whole tribe of quash (20+) emerges from the jungle to eat the Molly apples or bananas when in season, large birds dot the mangroves along the river edge. Small birds search the property for food.

A full time property manager maintains our properties. He visits the property frequently or contact him on the emergency cell phone provided to handle any of your concerns. Just ask!!

We also have a vacant beach front lot which you are welcome to visit and plant your toes in the sand or go for a swim... Ask Anthony about it.

Let us help you have a vacation to remember!

I am frequently asked about fishing in the river .. recently “Tim” was staying at Bocatura and contributed the following (Feb 2016).

“Fishing was good and I caught permit, barracuda, snapper, jacks and catfish just in front of the property (Bocatura)…..The water was clear and I caught on both lures and shrimp, fish and conch baits. I put in the hours to get the results but quickly learned that sunset and the first hour of darkness was the best time no matter what time the high tide was. Tony told me I was the best fisherman that had stayed but I expect I just stuck at it to find what worked and when. Fishing from the kayak was great fun.”

Bocatura is centrally located to reach many of Belize’s exciting activities.

Snorkeling trips,
 Scuba diving

The fishing is wonderful! drop fishing, trolling, river and lagoon
Fly-fishing. If fresh lobster and conch are something you are looking for, you have come to the right place!

“South Hopkins” (request our map) is home of three of the best ocean front restaurants in Belize. “South Hopkins is 2 miles from Bocatura. Or go into the village and eat at one of the local restaurants and enjoy a local cultural “Garifuna” dish.

Bocatura cabins are comfortable cabins on the Sittee River. The river flows from the watershed of the Cockscomb Basin to the west. The river area is ideally situated for mangrove growth along the banks and out to the mouth of the river where there are tall, tall black mangroves.

Bocatura Bank is tucked in off the Sittee River road- see VRBO map- it is south of the Village about 3 miles, and 2 miles from “South Hopkins” with Belizean Dream, Hamanasi, and Jaguar Reef Resorts. The area is surrounded by jungle growth, plains grasses, and cane grasses. Bocatura Bank property is a well maintained 4 acres of trimmed lawn area. It is a paradise for birders.

The owner comments: Saltwater fly fishing was the addiction that brought my family to Hopkins, Belize but it was the laid back atmosphere and warm, friendly people of Hopkins that made our decision to build a home an easy one.
Hopkins was a natural choice for me. The flats are a quick panga ride away and great local restaurants. If you are looking for a relaxed, laid back town, Hopkins fits the bill perfectly.

What makes this cabin unique

Bocatura Preserve is perfect for the individual interested in observing nature. The baby hummingbirds, 4'-5' iquana, quash... a whole tribe (30) emerges from the jungle to eat the Molly apples or bananas when in season, large birds dot the mangroves along the river edge. Small birds search the property for food.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had a fabulous time in Hopkins and at Bocatura. We ended up doing more diving than we planned, and had a really amazing time with Lucie, Declan and their crew. Because of that, we didn't spend a ton of time on the river or any time at all at the beach! We went out to South Water Caye and to Glover's Reef. Fantastic weather and beautiful diving. Saw lots of wildlife down there, turtles, rays, eels, even a blacktip reef shark!

As for the cabin, it was totally lovely. There wasn't a lot of wind and we were there right after some rainy weather, so I think the mosquitoes were in full effect, but we had a nice time hanging out on the deck, and it stayed pretty cool indoors. You've done a great job making it comfortable, and it had everything we needed. Maybe one thing that would have been nice would be a place to put a little clothesline on the patio, to hang wet things out to drip-dry? Bet the guys didn't think of that! That's my only tiny suggestion.

Tony and Anthony and co were all really friendly, great and helpful. In fact, every single person that we met in Belize, locals, ex-pats and travelers, were all totally nice and helpful. We couldn't have asked for a better trip.

Thanks again!!

We were robbed

  • 1 of 5

Our cabin was robbed, the door was kicked in. We reported to the incident to the police. When we mentioned who the onsite caretaker was--someone who was very 'friendly' with us--the police acknowledged that he was well known to them...and was surprised that the owner hired such a person. We have reached out to the owner 3 times since our return home, and he not responded to any of our messages. Another cabin was robbed 2 days before ours. The property and cabin was beautiful, but I would not recommend this property to other guests. The lack of response by the owner to our attempts to contact to tell him about our theft is very concerning. On more than 1 occasion, the onsite manager was smoking majurana in front me, my wife and my kids.

Owner's Response: I was at Bocatura about 3 days after the alleged incident. I was prepared for major damage to our glass paneled mahogany French doors given the description sent to me by the guest in an email. What we found was the bottom of the passive French door had a scuff mark where the perp pressed hard with his shoe to dislodge the slide bolt on the back side of the door from the floor. We replaced the slide bolt with a much heavier slide bolt. Each bedroom door has an exterior quality solid brass key in knob lock on it to secure the contents of the bedroom. The keys were in the locks. Each cabin has a keyed security box in the bedroom area. The key was in the unit and the unit functional. Guests have a responsibility to be smart travelers secure their belongings and not carelessly leave valuables in sight. For 6 years our mechanic provided our walk around evening “security”. He and his family lived in cabin 1. Unfortunately he succumbed to lymphoma cancer late Fall and left a wife and three kids under the age of four. Rather then kick her out we agreed to have her brother join her to keep a roof over her head and walk around Bocatura in the evenings. He has a 2 year old baby with spina bifida. Previous guests in cabin 2 were nurses and they have arranged Spine International Doctors to complete two surgeries on this baby this summer and fall. My point, in talking with this young man you will find a genuinely concerned dad who would do absolutely nothing to separate himself from this little boy and his mom at this perilous time. Other guests have learned the story from this out going young man. These guests seemed totally turned off by a local person of color. I am readily available by email, but when a guest starts the first email complaint with, “I have consulted our attorney here in Canada and he believes we can sue you for negligence”. The advice we received from our attorney is not to respond. We didn’t. Be a smart traveler; keep valuables out of sight and when possible under lock and key. Quiet and peaceful !

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Bocatura. Location is a little bit off, but is perfect for people who like to be in a quiet and peaceful environment. Lots of animals all over the garden!

Tony, Anthony and Gil is very welcoming and helpful. Only downside is the wifi, a sloth would deliver your email quicker! On the other hand who need wifi on the holiday?

I will definitely stay here again!

Sittee River Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful, serene retreat. The cabin is large and comfortable and the surrounding grounds are beautiful. This location is great for exploring the southern end of the country. It's pretty far from the town so a car is pretty much a necessity. The road in is pretty rough so an SUV would be best for frequent trips in and out. The property manager was great about sending information. This is not a place for people expecting condo-like luxuries and cleanliness. It is a cabin in the country! It was absolutely perfect for us and I will encourage all of my traveling friends to go there.
