About Nancy Essig

I grew up and have lived my entire life in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. I visited the cabin the first time when I was 3 months old. In those days there were no highways and it took 2 days with an overnite to make the 600 plus miles. After my parents bought the cottage from my father's parents in the 1950's we children were able to spend most of the summer with mom. Dad would go home and work a couple weeks then return again. It was great! After I graduated high school I worked several jobs and fell in love with travel. So in 1967 I began my career with Eastern Airlines and worked there for 21 years till our office was closed in 1988. 6 weeks later I began my business with Mary Kay cosmetics as a Sales Director and am celebrating 27 years. I enjoy having flexibility to have time to spend with my family. It's great to be retired but working and spending so much time with my granddaughter Mia who is 6 years old!

Nancy Essig purchased this cabin in 1945

Why Nancy Essig chose Menahga

Mia, my granddaughter is 8 years old now and the 5th generation to vacation and enjoy time at the cottage. It's peaceful and beautiful here and you can get close to nature and your family.

You can kick back and do nothing or keep yourself busy everyday if you like. The area and town of Park Rapids

are quaint with so much to see and do.

What makes this cabin unique

There are so many reasons why I love our cottage. One reason is the wonderful memories of the entire family being together. Grandfather making pancakes for breakfast and ringing the bell for us to come and get it! Fishing expeditions with the family and sitting around the table at night playing scrabble or canasta.

The house looks like something out of a storybook and the view of the lake and birds is relaxing.

The lake is right out your front door so perfect for playing in the sand, swimming, sunning, fishing or having a picnic!

There are two theatres close by with live performances throughout the summer, plus a movie theatre in town. There are many festivals and celebrations in Park Rapids and the neighboring towns throughout the Summer and Fall season. Each week in the summer, there is a musical concert in town with dancing in the street. There are things for the kids to do there also. There's a family pizza parlor with video games for kids, an old fashioned soda shop, a couple candy stores, several grocery stores, great bike rentals and path. During the summer, there will be a county fair at the fairgrounds, the rodeo, stock car races, parades and logging days. Mini Golf and go cart racing is available close by. It's really great to visit the headwaters of the mississippi (20 mins) and walk across the mississippi. Fantastic golf courses everywhere! We love having a campfire at night with someone playing the guitar and roasting marshmellows and hotdogs discussing the days events.

Wonderful cabin for relaxation and spending time with family

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at the cozy cottage for one week with my husband, two daughters and grandchildren. The cabin has everything you need in the kitchen, and sleeping accommodations are very good. I personally slept in the porch bedroom and loved waking up to a lake view and bird sounds. There are various bird feeders and bird houses on the property, if you are a bird enthusiast, you will love this.

Nancy was very attentive and it was very easy to communicate with her. I would definitely stay here again.

Felt like going to grandma's house!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our family stay at the cozy cottage! We did a family get-together at the cabin, and all of my siblings and I agreed that the cabin felt like "going to grandma's house" and truly did have a very cozy, family feel. We appreciated the small touches, such as the hammocks facing the lake, beautiful flowers outside and the fire pit close to the water. The lake is small and quiet, which we also appreciated. It may be helpful to note that two of the bedrooms have doors, while one bedroom has a curtain for a door covering. The house had everything we needed, and the kids caught a lot of sunfish from the dock! The cabin is close to park rapids, which was also handy! Overall, we loved the experience, and would like to return again, although our family may be too large at that point for the cabin.

We enjoyed the roomy, homey cabin and the nice yard and beach. Nancy was very easy to work with throughout our booking and stay. We had some issues with the boat launch and she did her best to help us out. Overall we had a nice time. We really enjoyed watching the birds!

Wonderful family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had an amazing week at the cozy cottage. The beach was perfect for our granddaughters! The location is close to many other activities, but we enjoyed the cabin and lake so much that we didn't venture too far. Fishing was great! We also enjoyed biking on the roads right around the cabin.

The owner, Nancy, was wonderful to work with and was very responsive and helpful during our stay. We are already planning our stay for next summer.

Cozy and Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was very comfortable and had everything we needed for our 9 night stay. There were condiments in the fridge and spices in the cabinet, so take note before you go grocery shopping. We were there partly for business and part pleasure. The cabin was conveniently located for my husbands job, and for me to take the car into the quaint little town. Fishing was good from the dock. and there was a fish cleaning table just outside the garage. We cooked on the gas grill every night. I enjoyed sitting in front of the bay window overlooking the lake and watching the Hummingbirds and other birds enjoy the numerous feeders. The window boxes were full of bright red blooming geraniums, which I watered twice while I was there. I have lots of flowers so it made me feel right at home. There were games, books, magazines, toys for children, Direct TV and Wireless Internet. We would definitely stay here on future visits, if available. The only things that would have made our stay better, would be the use a small boat/trolling motor and washing machine.

Nancy was so nice to work with, answered all our questions, and did her best to accommodate all our requests. Thank you Nancy for sharing your cozy cottage.

Owner's Response: Hi Cathy and Bob, Thanks for staying at our cozy cottage and for your nice comments. I've been thinking about where I can squeeze in a washing machine in the garage and will definitely be working on that!! Will check out the electric trolling motor as well for one of the fishing boats, great idea! Hope you will come again! Nancy

Best cabin ever!

  • 5 of 5

We cannot say enough about how wonderful our stay at Nancy's cabin was! The quiet and serene lake was gorgeous and full of fish! We are a newly married couple and it couldn't have been more relaxing..when we needed to get some food to throw on the grill Park Rapids was so close (Downtown was fun and we got a free caricature drawing and made sure we bought some chocolates!) Nancy was amazing and made sure we had anything and everything..she also emailed to update us and made sure we were settled. This place is the best! Unbelievable fireplace next to the water and so much to do. But so peaceful and relaxing! Thank you so much Nancy for opening up your cabin to us..we absolutely loved it! We can see the love you have for this place and are excited you are willing to share it with others.

Highly recommend this cabin and we would definitely stay here again if it's available!

Golfer's and fisherman's paradise!

!! We are just 200 miles North of the twin cities, 90 miles from Fargo, North Dakota, and 50 miles from Bemidji, Minnesota. You will love the small town of Park Rapids, Minnesota, just 5 miles away with shopping, restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores and a movie theatre. Our cottage is on a quiet lake, in the woods. You'll enjoy watching the purple martins, hummingbirds, yellow finches, orioles and more! The lake is perfect for swimming, relaxing, fishing or boating. You will enjoy all the activites available in Park Rapids which is 5 miles away. There are bike rentals in town with an awesome paved bike path that goes on for miles and miles. Why not bike to Dorset, have lunch or ice cream while there. Check out the antiques and have your pictures taken in the old west costumes. Fun! Park Rapids is a great town with pizza and other restaurants. You may want to have ice cream or a float at the ice cream shop on main street or visit Bella cafe for a great coffee, internet and delicious food. Or you may enjoy visiting the headwaters of the Mississippi, just 20 minutes away. Golf courses are nearby and plentiful, it's a golfers paradise! Strawberry and blueberry picking at the local farms in season is something the kids enjoy. There's so much to see and do. After fishing or boating in the evening, it's fun to gather around the campfire and roast some hot dogs and smores and discuss the days adventures and what's on for tomorrow. I know you will feel relaxed, comfortable and happy here!
