Designer Studio In The Heart Of Little Italy/Downtown San Diego

Bedrooms Studio
Space 350 sq ft
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Apartment, Studio, 1 Bathroom (Sleeps 2), Cozy Luxury Studio

Urbana is the perfect get away, right in the middle of it all. It’s located in the heart of San Diego's most thriving cultural, business and leisure districts but when you step inside the gate, you leave it all behind. The house was built in 1889 and charms visitors with original architecture that’s been completely re-imagined and designed to accommodate guests with a taste for modern amenities and a contemporary aesthetic.

When you come to the flat from a day exploring the beaches, parks, and charming districts of San Diego, you step into an adult playground all your own. Use the gas BBQ and outdoor dining table while you enjoy the lush landscapes, raised bed gardens, bamboo fences and curving hard-scapes around you. Dine on the patio as you watch the sun set over downtown San Diego's skyline. Look down into the garden for a more secluded, peaceful view.

The kitchen offers everything you need with fully stocked cookware, new stainless steel appliances, BBQ tools, dish and glassware, silverware, a full set of chef’s cookware, graters, strainers, steamers and much more. The television and iPod doc are both there to entertain you while you whip up culinary creations as well.

The living space offers a flat screen and DVD player, Wifi board games and books to help you unwind and let your mind play.

Use it as a work, sleep or play space. It has a custom built Murphy bed with luxurious bedding to lounge on in the evening. During the day, the Murphy bed tucks away and a rolling designer cushioned bench pushes against it to serve as a sitting area. Custom designed and built floating shelves hold the Blu-ray player and IHome speaker/charger/alarm clock. Lounge and read a book or catch up on emails under the reading lamp in a designer nail rimmed sitting chair.

The bathroom has been completely remodeled with shower and fixtures. All linens, toilet paper and paper towels included.

Use the two person dining table at meals, and convert it to a work-desk when you need to. When the weather is nice (95% of the time in San Diego!) enjoy the outdoor sitting table and BBQ.

The studio has black out blinds, double paned windows that shut out the city sounds, high ceilings, hardwood floors, a ceiling fan, heater, and all new cabinetry, tile, and fixtures. We love staying here, and hope you will too!

The studio also has soundproofed double doors that can be opened up to a neighboring rental. If you're interested in a larger space, or in vacationing with another couple or with kids, this a great way to share lodging with the option of privacy. Please let us know if you're interested in a double studio stay!

About Marie

Our family has lived in Ramona since the 1960s, and works to refurbish homes in San Diego, hoping to breath new life into their communities. We worked together to transform this 1889 historic home into a contemporary playground for vacationers and a respite for business people. Rob is a green designer and builder who has innovated energy efficient homes in San Diego for 40 years. Deborah, his wife, has worked to design the landscape, raised bed gardens, and hard-scapes surrounding the house. I worked together with my parents to design the interiors, furnish the cottage, and make prints of my original paintings for the interiors. I have a masters degree in painting and lived in the bay area for the past ten years working with kids.

We're a family of four generations of San Diego musicians, builders and artists who hope to host visitors and show them the best of what our home town has to offer. We love to travel, meet new people, and create. We hope that this flat feels like home to you.

Marie purchased this apartment in 2001

Absolutely charming... AND LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!

  • 5 of 5

First of all, the location is absolutely fabulous! We traveled all over San Diego and it is perfectly situated.

This place has so much's been completely renovated and what a great use of space! We loved it! It was cozy and charming and exactly what we were looking for. There was even a small issue with the t.v. and I called the owner and he immediatly helped us with the problem.

My husband and I will be returning to San Diego and already look forward to returning to this place.

Lovely stay in a lovely place

  • 5 of 5

We had a very nice stay in the Urbana Studio. Marie was a very responsive, kind hostess who quickly answered any questions we had, and getting (in)to the apartment was very smooth and simple. We were able to stow our luggage, despite arriving before the usual check-in time, which also made our experience that much nicer. The use of a numeric code for the gate and door removed any fears of having to keep track of keys, and was a nice touch.

The studio itself, which is on the second floor and has a balcony overlooking a very pretty shared garden, is very nicely appointed, and we were both pleasantly surprised with the comfort of the murphy bed and how spacious it felt for a studio. The kitchen is a very good size and comes with all the necessities you’d need during your stay (we enjoyed cooking our meals here) – there is even a BBQ outside, if desired! There is a spacious closet with an iron and small ironing board, which was appreciated, as well as extra towels if needed. The bathroom is also of good size for a studio. The shower has great water pressure and the showerhead was high enough that even our > 6’ tall selves could comfortably wash our hair.

Urbana is conveniently accessible by bus and only a short trip from the airport. You are also within very easy walking distance of all the tasty delights Little Italy has to offer, and only about a 15min walk from the core of Balboa Park. There is some ambient noise, both from the freeway as well as from the airplanes aiming for the airport (which are ubiquitous throughout Little Italy, Banker’s Hill, etc.), but we were able to sleep with the windows open without problems (even though I’m typically a light sleeper). Otherwise, the location was quiet; we heard no noise from others staying in the building and felt very comfortable walking about the neighbourhood both day and night.

The studio was very clean and we did not lack for anything. It is a great place - especially for the value it is offered at - and we would happily stay there again.

Thank you!

Cute but quirky

  • 3 of 5

This is a cute place. The location is good. Street parking wasn’t a problem. Bed is comfortable and the kitchen is well supplied. The quirky part is the bathroom... the shower is tiny. And the bathroom light is on a motion senser which shuts itself off while you’re in the shower. The bathroom door squeaks loudly (woke up the second person when using the bathroom at night). The traffic and plane noise is loud but didn’t bother us too much. Much more bothersome was the party that went on all night in the unit below us. I would have given the place 4 stars until the party. We’ll stay somewhere else next time.

Owner's Response: Mali, Thank you so much for your response. It is very important for us to know about noise complaints at the time of the issue so we can take care of it. We have very strict rules with our full time tenants about noise, and the issue can be easily resolved. We will certainly be following up after your review to get everybody on the same page.

Great space in a wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

We are looking for an excuse to come back. The studio is very clean, comfortable, has exactly what you need and close to such a cute area. The neighbors can be easily heard through the walls but it never bothered us.
