I am a writer and designer for whom Fire Island has been my Holyland since childhood. Even though I now live in San Francisco, it remains my place of peace and comfort. Prior to purchasing 'SandPauper' in 2004, it had been in the same family since it was built in the early 1900s.
Linda Taylor purchased this cottage in 2004
'SandPauper' is one of the few remaining original (unspoiled!) cottages in Ocean Beach. Although comfortable and welcoming, it retains the true character and spirit of 'Old Fire Island.' We have worked hard to preserve its intrinsic quaint charm while also providing all the amenities which allow it to be enjoyed by our seasonal guests.
...will give you a quite accurate impression of SandPauper cottage. But to truly appreciate just how special and satisfying SandPauper is, you'll have to actually stay there for some time. My wife & I -- neither of us has ever been called inattentive! -- were still, after nine happy days, noticing particular decorative & functional details only moments before departing. Linda may not have (to my knowledge) formally named any of the rooms, as we jocularly did -- the bird room, for instance, or the fish room, or the sailing ships room, or the mermaids room (where, when you "go to the bathroom," you'll do so in the company of a bunch of frisky and frolicking mermaids) -- but without question each room of the cottage is a small work of art in itself, meticulously and perspicaciously decorated and provisioned. Put it all together, as Linda has done over the years, and you indeed have one of the most unique, comfortable, and satisfying houses on the island. Given the chance, we will not hesitate to stay here again and of course we heartily recommend it to one and all.
Our 2nd. visit to "SandPauper" and will not be the last! We love this little cottage and it's wonderful warmth & comfortable atmosphere...We love sitting on front porch while sipping coffee. Short walk to town and short walk to beach, perfect location. It's so easy for us to get there and yet it feels a million miles away from the city..There is nothing you could want or need, it's all there..The love, time and effort put into the home is apparent at every turn.. We adore this charming little cottage....Tks. Linda.
This is our second stay at Sandpauper, and once you've been there you'll know why you'd want to come back.
This kind of special place is a rare find. I think it is the gem of Ocean Beach. Linda's place is comfortable and
beautifully decorated, and well cared for, and all is with the utmost taste. There is nothing like sitting on the
sweet screened in porch with a good book, or having a peaceful dinner out there with a cricket symphony and
the breeze gently tickling the wind chimes. The house has everything you might need. There is a great outdoor
shower! We made use of the bikes, which is fun, especially when the sun is at it's hottest on the beach. And of
course you are just strides from the beach! More than anything, it is of note what a gracious host Linda is, and
how many little things she has thought of ahead of time to make your time easy and delightful. All the details are so
appreciated, from the kleenex boxes to the lovely blue willow china, the spices, the books and art works, and the
thoughtful recommendations from Linda...The cottage itself is a real treasure, great layout, gorgeous wood flooring, high
ceilings with handsome old beams, and a giant hearth that is the center piece of the living room, which quickly transports
you to your own beach fairy tale, complete with mermaids, birds, clipper ships, and lighthouses. Linda is very easy to work
with, and she is a lovely and gracious person. We love it there so much, and it's all because of what Linda has created there.
We are grateful to have experienced it, for there truly aren't many antique cottages so preserved and kept up as this one.
Perfect writers retreat! Great for couples! Great for solitude! Romantic... The best!
This is now my 4th stay at the charming SandPauper cottage and each visit has been wonderful with new experiences.
It is always spotless upon arrival and it's beginning to feel like a welcoming grandparent wrapping their arms around you. I just feel that much at home here..
I was with two dear friends who had never been to Fire Island I and I was thrilled that they fell in love with it and also felt so at home at Linda's beach cottage.
They described it as inviting, warm and cozy and felt that everywhere you looked there was another "vignette" to feast your eyes on. Linda has gone the extra mile to
make this so charming from the mermaid and lighthouse pictures to stocking the kitchen with your every need.
This trip we took advantage of the bikes and did more land touring rather than beaching as the month of June was perfect for this.
We biked to the Sunken Forest and all the neighboring towns and along the way we discussed which houses we were going to buy if we all won the lotto!
We would eat our breakfast at home sitting on the screened in porch wrapped in our big wool shawls early in the morning and loving that the deer came to visit us every day.
Late afternoon we would walk to the beach and enjoy the sunset and then if we did not cook at the cottage e we would head into town for a meal at the Albatross which was our favorite place and
we highly recommend.
This past year I had the great privilege of meeting Linda in person as I took a cruise that stopped in San Francisco and I made a point to call her. She dropped what she was doing and came and met me and it turned into a fantastic day of chatting and wine tasting and snacking at the Ferry Building.
That's what I call going out of your way!
I will continue to book SandPauper and hope to share the joy of this magical place with many other friends.
My family of 5 enjoyed our stay at Linda's SandPauper. The house has all the amenities advertised, and we wanted for nothing. Loads of beach towels, chairs, bath towels, etc. The kids (3 teens) loved the bikes and the WiFi. We especially enjoyed making s'mores in the fabulous fireplace--loads of wood and kindling available. We ate most meals on the back porch-quiet and peaceful. Lots of nice touches like dish soap, TP and bounty upon arrival--even shells for decorating (a Fire Island tradition) are provided! Linda is very personable and easy to work with. We had a lovely time.
My family and I stayed at this lovely home-away-from-home celebrating my 21st birthday. There was plenty of room for my mom, dad, and two older brothers to each have our own space in this cozy cottage. When we weren't out exploring the darling surrounding town and beaches on the bikes provided (our favorite, we loved the bikes!!), we were curled up reading and chatting by the fireplace or porch. Every inch of the house is just absolutely fascinating. When we walked in, we all walked around and talked about our favorite little knick-knacks and pieces of artwork. Linda was so easy and gracious to work with. She anticipates every need that might come up when vacationing in a beach town, and we felt very well taken care of. It was such a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Thanks so much Linda!
Enjoy a day at the beach or take a short walk to the village, which faces Great South Bay. There you will find bay-side swimming with lifeguard, bay-front bars & restaurants, grocery stores, ice cream & candy shops, clothing boutiques, hardware stores, nurseries, bicycle rentals, and more.
The town of Ocean Beach has a post office, playground, children's day camp, tennis and basketball courts, softball field, library, cinema, water taxis, and lateral ferries to other Fire Island communities. Catholic and Protestant churches and a Synagogue nearby. Hike to SUNKEN FOREST - a 300+ year-old primeval holly forest east of Ocean Beach and below sea level. An enchanting and magical experience!
