Second Wind sits on a south facing lot on the very edge of the National Park in Reef Bay, on the south coast of St. John. Reef Bay and Second Wind remain a largely undeveloped and naturalist’s hideaway, off the roads traveled by most St. John guests. From your villa it is about a 1-2 minute walk to the Reef Bay path and then a 5-minute hike down to Reef Bay Beach - one of the most private National Park beaches on St John. For hikers, a scenic 1-mile hike along the Reef Bay shoreline brings you to another white sand beach at the head of Reef Bay. There is also an old sugar mill here with a self-guided interpretative tour. Another 1.6 mile National Park trail leads you to the turquoise waters, white sands and colorful snorkeling at Lameshure Bay. Along the way, you can visit the petroglyphs and a partially restored old manor house. You can also take a more challenging 1.2 mile hike to the top of scenic Bordeaux Mountain. For restaurants, bars and shopping, it's a 4-mile drive into Cruz Bay, but Reef Bay is well off the beaten path, so few tourists explore this relatively unknown area of St John.
Second Wind is a one level villa that consists of a great house, with a private and romantic one-bedroom cabana on the left and on the right of the great house. The great house contains the living/dining/kitchen areas plus one bedroom/bath. The second and third bedroom/baths are in the two cabanas and are similar in size and appointments.
All the bedrooms (2 kings, 2 twins-convert to a king) are air conditioned and all have pillow views of the Caribbean Sea. Each bedroom also has a tiled bath with a shower with a view. The twins/king bedroom is accessed from the great room or the deck, and the cabana bedrooms each have exterior private access. The three bedrooms all enjoy romantic water views through screened sliding glass doors.
The living room includes a 32’ flat screen TV/DVD, a stereo/cassette/CD and an iPod hookup, wireless Internet and books and games. Lots of south facing windows provide peaceful ocean views and create a bright interior that is accented by rose tiled floors, Caribbean artwork and rattan furniture that creates a comfortable and relaxing tropical island home.
The dining room seats six around a wooden table or you can dine on the deck at a table for 4-6.
The handsome kitchen is fully tiled and well appointed with a 4-burner gas stove and oven, microwave, toaster, blender, coffee maker, telephone and a washer/dryer. A BBQ gas grill is on the deck.
Second Wind faces southeast and gets lots of sun on the spacious sun deck and the pool, but there is also a large covered deck for relaxing in the shade, with plenty of deck furniture for both the sun deck or the shade deck.
Second Wind is one of a handful of homes on St. John that is built on one level, making this villa ideal for young children or anyone adverse to climbing stairs. The real draw of this home is its location, 25 feet from the boundary of the National Park, you're in a peaceful, tranquil, naturalist zone where the only sounds you hear are surf breaking on the beach and the wind rustling through the palm fronds. This is a very stress free living environment, but you're only a 15-minute drive from great tropical bars and restaurants in Cruz Bay
Our family was one of the first families to build a villa overlooking Reef Bay, and we chose this location for its uncommon natural beauty and its gorgeous views of the National Park. We also like the calm and restful atmosphere on this part of the island, which is the quiet, less visited side of St. John. We do like tourists, most have come to St. John to visit the National Park and we share their love for its grandeur. But we don’t necessarily love tourists in our neighborhood, and that’s why we chose to build our home in Reef Bay. The south shore road that takes you to Reef Bay is not a through road, and unlike St. John’s other primary roads, this road dead ends at Reef Bay. We’re off the beaten path of the day-trippers and tourists that visit St. John, and that’s one of the features that we love most about Reef Bay. The foremost feature that we love is, of course, the spectacular beauty of the jagged south coast of the National Park. You can’t drive along the south coast of the national park, but you can hike it, and it’s a beautiful hike along the turquoise shoreline and through lush tropical forests. For most of the time you’re hiking, swimming, snorkeling, or relaxing in your villa, you’re in that Walden Pond - Caribbean style, state of being alone and at peace with yourself and your environment. We can’t say enough good things about St. John’s National Park, and about Reef Bay, which is definitely one of the park’s hidden jewels.
The two of us were just at Second Wind for a perfect week of hiking, swimming and lounging. Anywhere we settled ourselves on the generous deck that spans the full length of this house, there was a soothing breeze and a beautiful view of the horizon. This is such a peaceful place. (I work in Times Square, NYC!) Even though it is a short drive to town we truly felt "away from it all". The pool is very refreshing any time of day but the most delicious times to be in it are morning and late afternoon. Each night we fell asleep to the lulling sound of the waves and needed no A/C. I enjoyed hiking down to the beach in the morning to sketch and paint with my watercolors. Days were spent on the numerous hiking trails available on the island and we ended each hike with a luxurious swim at the beaches. Each beach was more stunning than the one before. Thank you Caribbean Villas, We will be back, Julie and Roger
We just got back from a week's vacation in St. John, at Second Wind overlooking Reef Bay. Everything about the villa was perfect for us. We were three couples- our sons and daughters in law were with us-and the set up of the villa is perfect for that, as each had a separate bedroom and bathroom area. We all commented on the comfortable beds, and loved our private outdoor garden showers. The middle building included the living area, kitchen and had more than enough seating and cool breezes. We spent most of the day out of the villa, snorkeling and relaxing at the beautiful beaches, but it was great to come back in the late afternoon to spend time outside on the large deck area that accommodated a nice hot tub, pool, plenty of seating and an outdoor table. The morning hikes we took down to Reef Bay were enjoyable too, after soaking up that gorgeous morning view with a cup of coffee on the deck. The remote location makes Second Wind very relaxing and secluded, but we never felt like we were far from the restaurants and beaches. We hope to be back soon, and have enjoyed all three of our experiences renting from Caribbean Villa-everyone there is wonderful to work with and very accommodating!
My wife and I recently stayed at Second Wind in St. John Jan 23 - 30th and had an incredible time, in one word it was "paradise." And it was extremely affordable! The place had spectacular views of the ocean / beach front below from all rooms, including the bedrooms, you have your own pool / jacuzzi / hot tub / family room / huge porch for morning and dinner meals looking at the ocean ... it was perfect, and secluded! This truly was the get away we needed. There were only 2 of us, but the place has 3 separate bedrooms, all VERY well kept with comfy mattresses, all the towels / bedding you could need, and I have to mention the "extras" ... forget a flashlight? they have it. Forget salt / pepper? ... already there. All the creature comforts are available to you, here in paradise, and C. Villas did a great job of getting us off on the right foot, circling must see snorkeling coves / beaches / restaurants on the map at check-in, even picking us up from the pier. This is the vacation you deserve, and so reward yourself by staying at this villa ... I have no personal / financial interest in this organization aside from passing along credit where credit is due. You won't be disappointed, and can thank me later. Stay here, you'll love it!
I stayed at Second Wind this past November and loved it! The home is all on one level, which was important to my family since we have a family member that has problems with a lot of stairs. The main house has a great kitchen, well stocked, cable/tv - which is important to my kids - but not so much for me! Plently of seating indoors and out - The bedrooms are all quite spacious - views, beds are comfortable. - there is a/c in the bedrooms but we did not use it as the breezes kept the villa quite comfortable. The best feature - the outdoor garden showers - what an experience - loved them! The home is about a 15 minute drive from Cruz Bay - so you feel away from things but still close enough to go out to dinner etc. Reef Bay beach is a walk down the road and then a hike down the trail. Not all of the family was able to do this but the ones that did really enjoyed it. Would stay here again - Caribbean Villas were nice to work with - very helpful!
