Why Steve and Joy Powell - owner/manager/builder/cleaning crew chose Mars Hill
We experience 4 seasons that offer an array of activities all year round. Guest will be in close proximity to skiing, golfing, rafting, tubing, zip-lines, National Forest, orchards, horseback riding, The Biltmore Estate, Western NC Nature Center, Dollywood, Gray Fossil Museum, Christmas tree farms, natural hot springs, gem mining as well as every luxury a city offers; shopping, dining, theaters. The lodges are well planned to allow privacy and safety. There is plenty of driveway parking and there are no steep drops or stilts like most mountain cabins.
What makes this Lodge unique
The owners, Steve and Joy Powell, live on Memory Mountain and offer tours of their farm to interested guest, however appointments must be made in advance. Their farm features rabbits, range chickens, pheasants, quail, egg gathering, black berries, raspberries, strawberries, apple/peach/pear trees. Their Antique Museum has the largest arrowhead collection in the Southeast. You may view depression glass, farm equipment and neat historical mountain finds. Arrowhead hunts may also be coordinated with your scheduled visit.

Perfect mountain retreat
Nice mountain retreat. Quiet. Away from the civilization, but still drivable if you want to.
Nice House-Isolated location
Overall the experience was ok. Loved the property and setting. If you are looking to be isolated this is a great place. We were out and about doing things everyday. The location may be great in the winter as it is close to skiing areas, but exploring Western NC and the Asheville area is it isolated. About 1-2 hours from most outdoor sites for summer tourism. While you are only 20+ minutes from Asheville itself is ok. Several lights and fans did not work in the house (at least we could not determine how they worked). The bathroom upstairs leaked into the bathroom downstairs from the shower. We could not use the upstairs bathroom shower after the 2nd night. Called the owner who said they were going to stop by and take a look. The information in the house said we had to take the trash to some local dump ourselves on a nearby road. I could not figure out where this was and the owner said just to leave it. I found this a little annoying that we had to remove the garbage ourselves. I understand we make the garbage, but what is the $150 cleaning fee for then. I had a truck so it was not a big deal to take it if I could have found the place, but others may have had to put it in their car. The driveways are steep and rocky. We did not have many issues since it was summer time, but knowing this in advance may help some people (to be fair I may have missed it in the overview of the house). I can see in the wintertime a 4x4 being a requirement if ice or snow are present. My father required a recliner to sleep in and the owner was great to set that up for him. We really appreciated it as they certainly did not have to do this. I would recommend this place if it fits your vacation needs. We went to Mt. Mitchell (1.5 hours away), Pisgah National Forest Ranger Station (sliding rock, looking glass, and Moore Cove waterfalls about 1.5 hours away), Great Smokey Mountains Visitor Center (each one between 1.5 to 2 hours away) None of this is the house or owners responsibility. I just wanted to share this with people who are unfamiliar with the area when looking for rentals.
Fantastic accommodations and a super host!
Had a wonderful getaway family vacation. Booking was easy, check in a breeze, no problems. Had all we needed. Host was very personable and helpful. Enjoyed meeting him and hearing his story. Lots of attention paid to details. Will definitely book with him again.
Our family of 8 had a wonderful time at the Timberwolf Lodge. We loved sitting on the porch in the rocking chairs listening to the water from the nearby stream. Had a great time fishing as well. We will definitely be back.
Memory Mountain did not disappoint! The area was beautiful and the cabin was cozy and comfortable, perfect for our Christmas away from home. Great location close to everything we needed. Kids loved the snow-tubing nearby, we hiked the Appalachian Trail just 10 minutes from the cabin, and found a beautiful flat trail (Laurel Creek Trail) near Hot Springs about 30 minutes away. Not to mention Asheville was just 30 minutes from the cabin as well. The most memorable part of our vacation though was getting to know Steve. He truly cares about families creating lasting memories and enjoying themselves. He took time out of his day to give us a tour of his antique collections and share stories about his life. My 10 and 11 year old were truly inspired by him and his kindness towards others, as were we. This was a vacation we will never forget. We hope to visit again in the near future.
This house not only felt like home but was such a great time and was absolutely beautiful on the outside. The owners definitely know what they're doing and make sure everything is taking care of before arrival. Had an absolutely wonderful time, and can't thank Mr. & Mrs. Powell enough for letting us stay in their gorgeous home!
It is easy to get to Memory Mountain. Memory Mountain resort is located just north of Asheville, NC less than 3 miles off of Interstate 26 which connects directly to 1-95 and 1-81.
There are also 2 airports nearby - Asheville, NC (35 miles) or Tri-Cities, TN (50 miles). Both airports have great rates flying with Allegiant Air as well as other major airlines.
