3 Bedroom/2 Bath, Sleeps 7 Oceanfront
Escape the tourist crowds in this quiet, oceanfront, 3 bedroom condo on peaceful Maalaea Bay. Just off from the living room and master bedroom, the lanai (balcony) offers a stunning panoramic view of the ocean and southwest Maui. Each morning brings brilliant sunrises over Haleakala, a long-dormant 10,000 foot volcano directly across the bay. Depending on the time of year, you might also watch humpback whales or local surfers.
This unit is mere steps to the ocean where giant green sea turtles feed along the edge of the retaining wall. Adept snorkelers, divers, and surfers can enter the ocean by steps descending from the lawn. A short walk to the end of the road takes you to Sugar Beach, the longest beach on Maui—kid friendly and perfect for swimming or walking.
This spacious and quiet end-unit is well-maintained and comfortable, and each room has a beautiful view and a breeze from the tropical trade winds. Adding to your authentic island experience, the owners have maintained much of their home’s original furnishing—giving the unit a retro feel with touches of Hawaiian, Asian, and American décor in a truly Hawaiian mix of cultural elements. The unit also features beautiful wood and tile floors throughout.
Maalaea is one of the best locations on Maui – low-key and yet centrally situated for easy access to great beaches and popular day trip destinations. Maalaea’s sleepy little village features the world-class Maui Ocean Center aquarium, several great restaurants, and convenient access to the whale watching, snorkeling and fishing trips that depart daily from its picturesque boat harbor.
Enjoy this private, waterfront condo, where you can relax, play, and truly experience the tranquility of your Maui vacation.

This was our second time to Maui and loved how central Ma’alaea was compared to Ka’anapali. The actual condo had a wonderful view of the ocean and south Maui. Washer, dryer, dishwasher, towels along with cooler, beach toys, chairs and boogie boards for the beach. There was plenty of room for the six of us. It rained the majority of the time we were there so without AC everything felt damp all the time but if the wind was just right a good cross breeze would cool off the place each night
Pineapple, banana bread, jam and coffee was left for us in the fridge. However, our pineapple was rotten but we appreciated the gesture
The condo and view were wonderful! The trade winds that came through the condo kept us cool and were so refreshing. The condo was just as advertised, big enough for us and our 4 adult children. Loved eating meals on the lanai with that beautiful view. The condo had everything we needed! Thank you Barbara for the treats in the fridge and for answering all our questions!
This place is a gem!
What a perfect visit we had. Maalaea is a real gem... It's about 20 minutes away from everything but without the hordes of tourists. The view from this place is nothing short of incredible. It's all blue ocean, palm trees, and a view of the island... complete eye candy.
We love being right on the ocean, and this place was roomy enough for our group of six, so the kids had space to play and the grandparents could be comfortable too. The beach down the street is perfect for children, with lots of sand and fairly gentle surf, quick and easy to get to. Best of all it wasn’t overrun with people like the beaches recommended by travel websites. We also got a week pass to the Maui Ocean Center that's just up the street. It was amazing to see the island's fish and coral up close, and it's well worth visiting several times, especially when going at kid pace. It was also a nice way to take a break from the sun in the afternoons.
The condo itself has a Hawaiian feel to it. I especially liked the bamboo furniture and the lovely Japanese doors in the master bedroom, gave the room such a unique character. Some might think the condo is a bit dated in places, but that’s how many condos in Hawaii are, though in my experience most are not nearly as bright, clean, and charming as this one. All in all, it's a nice place and perfect location, and we hope to go back very soon.
(Sounds like other visitors had mosquito problems when they visited. We didn't. We were advised to close the lanai doors at sunset to avoid bugs, but we kept the screened windows open at night for the breeze to cool us. That worked for us.)
Annual Maintenance Complete!
We are sorry about the difficulty a few of our past guests experienced with mosquitoes during their visit. We since discovered there was a major rain storm shortly before the guests arrived. It was one of the worst storms on Maui in the last 100 years, and local residents tell us that after the September storm they saw the worst outbreak of mosquitoes in many, many years. Maui is in the tropics and when there's a freak storm the mosquitoes can come out. Ma'alaea, where our condo is located, often has enough wind activity that we're usually spared from mosquitoes.
We take great pride in maintaining our condo so it is comfortable for visitors. We were unaware that there were problems with the screens. No one before had complained, cleaners hadn't noticed and the screens had been in perfect condition when we completed our annual maintenance 9 months earlier. We suspect any screen problems went unnoticed by most other visitors before the big rain storm because the mosquitoes weren't much of an issue before. We have replaced ALL of the damaged screens, including the ones on the lanai sliding doors. We believe it was the gussets on the lanai screens that allowed mosquitoes to enter since mosquitoes cannot crawl through tiny holes, so we had those fixed also. We just completed our yearly 7 week stay, and we had no problems with mosquitoes in the unit. Obviously the deluge of mosquitoes is over.
According to several screen companies we've spoken to, it's very hard to get a 100% perfect fit on lanai screen doors, so we always recommend to our guests that if they see any mosquitoes to close the glass doors at night, because bugs are attracted to the interior lights. Screened windows fit tighter than lanai screens so the windows can be kept open at night to keep the air flowing without the risk of attracting bugs.
We've had many guests stay in our condo over the years, and we have renters who return to our place EVERY year. Clearly none of them have ever experienced a mosquito problem like our previous guests. It truly was a perfect storm of circumstances, and we're so sorry it happened.
Bugged by this Condo...
We found the Condo very quaint. It was slightly older than expected, but everything was clean and the location in Ma'alaea was wonderful. The layout of the condo was just as pictured in the ad. Barbara even left a fresh pineapple, and some banana bread in the fridge for us when we arrived.
We realized when we opened the door there was no air conditioning. We neglected to check that out when we decided to rent this property. If we had of things might have been different. We opened the windows to air out the Condo, they had screens on them. That night some of us were bitten by mosquito's. The next night was even worse. When you have 30 plus bites per person I would say there is no excuse for that. One girl turned on her phone light and killed over 18 mosquito's that were hovering over her head. Barbara was notified and said she had not had any problems from other renters. That night she brought bug spray, wrist bands, mosquito coils and insect repellent. She even offered us a smaller Condo, but we would have to share beds so that was not acceptable. The last two nights were so bad we closed all of the windows and lit the mosquito coils. I couldn't say if they worked because we already had so many bites it was hard to tell. I talked to several other residents in the Condo and they had the same problem. The second day there we had to put everything away so they could spray. One of the girls stayed home and if they sprayed it was not on the inside. This problem could be management not really taking care of the flying bugs, but I think the real issue was the screens had small holes in them.
As nice as Barbara was this whole situation ruined our trip. We couldn't wait to get out of there. I have stayed at many places in Hawaii and have never had a problem with mosquito's. I will be sure to check to see if the rental has air conditioning in the future.
Aloha, we are so sorry these guests experienced this. Strange that the guests before or after didn't have any mosquito problem at all. We know how tempting it is to keep sliding screen doors open during the day but wondered if that was part of the problem.
That said, we take all comments seriously and the owners are there for their yearly stay and brought in a professional screen expert to check all screens for any tears or gaps in the frames. They installed tighter rubber gaskets around the sliding screen doors that go out to the lanai and told us mosquitoes can only fly in, they can't crawl.
Yes this condo is one that doesn't have a/c but it's an end unit so there are windows in every room for good ocean breezes. We are also located in an area of Maui where the trade winds blow almost constantly. And being so close to the ocean, the sound puts you to sleep!
We tried our best to try to remedy this challenge and always are responsive to our guests.
A Slice of Paradise
We rent this large condo every year and feel it is our home away from home. It is away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy places but very centrally located so you are close to everything. The condo is right on the ocean so you can fall asleep listening to the waves and wake up to vanilla macadamia nut coffee on the lanai as you watch the sun rise over the volcano. The harbour with whale watching, snorkelling and fishing boats is a four minute walk away as is the seven mile Sugar Beach and the Maui acquarium with shops and restaurants. If you feel lazy you can chill on the lanai and watch the whales teach their calves how to breech, pec and tail slap. Or you can watch the sea turtles graize on the sea wall below the lanai. When the "freight train" is running, you can watch the surfers on one of the world's fastest waves right in front of your condo.
Every year the attentive owners make upgrades: new stove and microwave, new carpet, new floors, refinished table and doors. I would recommend this condo for anyone who wants a lovely vacation in paradise.
Upon reservation previous guests great finds are shared.
