We came here for our anniversary. Great little place. We loved the hot tub and the cabin like feel. We thought it was really nice how the owners included a huge album of dvd's for us to watch. We enjoyed cooking together in the kitchen, which was fully stocked with all the pots, pans and utensils we needed, as well as some basic spices and such. The only problem we had was with the jacuzzi, which was missing a piece on the stopper, so my husband jerry rigged one and made it work. The management company said theyd have someone come out and look at it right away. The owners were very nice to work with, always got back to us quickly and returned our security deposit quickly.we also loved walking down to the river and watching for wildlife. Even saw a bald eagle!
The place was clean and easy for a "novice" renter to enjoy
The home was very clean and well maintained, but not what I was expecting. Neighbors were very close and the river is not in sight of the cabin. My husband and I really enjoyed a long soak in the hot tub every morning where we would watch severel deer in the meadow beyond the trees. The cabin is well appointed and the bed was comfortable. Everything worked like a charm.
We came out of DC for a long relaxing weekend. Knowing the weather at this time of year can be unpredictable, we booked Bear Timber because of the hot tub on the deck, if nothing else we could relax in it if the weather was cold and rainy.
Pre-arrival communication was good and the GPS in our car took us right to the door. Lockbox was where they said it would be and the code was correct. Upon opening the front door we thought we had made the right choice. The kitchen was clean and well stocked. Previous reviews had mentioned that it looked as if it could use a deep clean and it looked as if this had been done.
When we returned from dinner Friday evening it was cool and raining so we decided to get in the hot tub on the deck. The instructions for the cabin say it is set to 95. We opened it up and the water temp was 78. We turned it on and tried to get in but the water temp never got out of the 80's. We tried to increase the temperature with the controls but there was an error message on the display stating the filters needed to be cleaned and there was a problem with the low flow water system. Being cold from this my wife decided to warm up in the jacuzzi in the master bath. Upon filling and turning on the jets she was greeted with the most disgusting display of slime and dirt we had ever seen. Clearly the tub had not been cleaned in a long time. After this we decided to do a closer inspection of the bathrooms. We found urine stains running down the front of both toilets and the amount of dirt, dust and hair on the top of the shower stall walls was unbelievable.
Saturday morning we called the property manager about the hot tub. Our call was answered right away and we were told the heating problem could be rectified by turning the breaker off and on again. We did this and left for lunch.
When we came back that afternoon the tub was still not hot so we again called the manager. She came out and after looking at the tub and trying several things she stated she could not fix it but would see if she could get a repairman out on Sunday. Ironically she also told us that the cleaners had reported having problems with the tub too. Clearly this had not been acted upon. The manager also offered to clean the tub in the master but we declined.
Tech could not fix problem Sunday, rental was a bust! No contact post rental other than asking for this review. Our advice, rent from the owner where possible, they are better if problems arise
This was the best idea ever for my husband and me plus our dog ... A weekend away from DC (but not too far away for a quick trip) to a cabin with everything we could imagine wanting - fireplace, heat/ac, wifi, tv, grill, hot tub, great kitchen, comfy bed, washer/dryer, bath/shower, with access to a wooded area, canoes and bikes included with life jackets and vests, and a fire pit with free firewood. We enjoyed every aspect of this cabin. We and our dog loved access to the river. It was clean, well decorated, with easy to follow instructions on how to work everything like the grill and hot tub. Id been a little concerned after seeing a review about the neighbors being close, but we didn't really see or hear anyone, so for us the neighbors were definitely a non-issue. It's a normal street with cabins/homes but they aren't right on top of each other. Overall it was a pricier cabin option for the area but for what it offers, it's truly more than a fair price. It was the perfect end to summer.
Only two complaints which were minor and didn't hamper our good time : 1- the grill needed cleaning.
2- there were a lot of dead bugs in the porched in area so we didn't enjoy that space. Both issues can and I'm sure will be quickly resolved.
One tip is that there isn't cell phone service in the area and the cabin is off of a gravel road, so getting in when it's dark at night was doable but tricky - make sure you have the directions saved and don't need the Internet to access them when you get close to the cabin. We did a day trip to Skyline Drive which was about 25 minutes away for the entrance we picked and the rest of the time just relaxed at and around the cabin. Note- there is a drip coffee machine and filters- just bring the coffee!
I found the managers to be extremely responsive and on top of things- and they were kind enough to give us a late check out since no one was coming the following day.
We really loved our visit to the cabin and highly recommend it.
Bottom line - it's exactly as advertised. Modern. Up-to-date. Clean!!!! Well-appointed with everything you need except groceries. Everything works and there isn't anything that makes you think, "Oh, I don't want to touch that." Even the yard is nicely landscaped!
Having been to a number of cabins in the area over the years, Bear Timbers is one of the best. Easy to access (even in a small 2-wheel drive car!) and close enough to town that you can go get groceries without it being a major trip, but well situated away from main roads so it's nice and quiet. The cabin itself is newly built (2013) with great appliances - fridge has filtered water through the door and an icemaker, stove/range is gas and works great, dishwasher is full-size. Full size washer/dryer are a little loud, but get the job done well. Even the TVs are "smart TVs" that you can use to access Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. (Not that you will really spend time watching TV.... because... hot tub!) Gas grill on the deck is connected to an LP line, so no fussing with propane tanks or running out of gas mid-bbq. Easy to use (even for a novice!) and has an automatic shut off in case you forget to turn it off - yay for safety! Gas fireplace ("wood burning stove" style, but gas) is convenient and easy to use if it's cold. Central heat/ac works great and the thermostat doesn't take an engineering degree to operate - just push the up/down arrows to make it warmer or cooler. Decor is "cabin-y" but blessedly simple - not a bunch of frilly curtains and pillows - nice (very comfy) leather sofa and love seat, wooden table, wooden blinds, and gorgeous hardwood floors. Beds are "firm" but not uncomfortable. If you prefer very soft/squishy pillows then bring one. Sheets and towels are provided and are soft/comfortable - nothing threadbare or rough like you get in hotels sometimes. There's a fully-screen porch as well as an open deck area with a hot tub that was divine. Easy to operate (push button for jets. Push button for lights. Push up/down buttons to adjust temp) and clean.
The only thing I didn't totally love was the very soft water that made it hard to rinse conditioner out of my hair. More water pressure in the shower would help that a little, but that was the only thing that was anything short of ideal.
I will definitely come back and stay here again. I brought my two dogs and they loved running around the grassy area down by the river and just lounging on the deck while I soaked in the hot tub
Bear Timbers Cabin was a perfect choice for a getaway weekend! We could not have asked for a more relaxing and comfortable location. Clean, well appointed, and convenient to many activities. Don't let the picture fool you. This is a spacious cabin with plenty of room for a large family.
