About Mike and Holly DeHerrera

My wife, five kids and I love Colorado and especially enjoy hiking and exploring new places.

Mike and Holly DeHerrera purchased this house in 2002

Why Mike and Holly DeHerrera chose Florissant

I grew up coming to this part of Colorado. I spent many summer nights camping in 11 mile canyon, about 15 minutes from Silent Creek. I've always loved coming to the mountains to enjoy the outdoors. Then, eleven years ago, my wife and I decided to move up to this beautiful area, making it our home year-round. Now we're excited to turn it in to a vacation rental for others to enjoy.

What makes this house unique

One of the things we fell in love with was the wildlife. We have had up to 20 deer grazing on the property and have even listened to the howls of animals at night or seen a black bear lumbering through the trees below our home. We also love the peaceful, star-filled nights as we sit out on our deck talking. When the sun goes down, often the only things we hear are the wind and an occassional fox looking for food. Not only did we fall in love with the nature up here, but we love our home. We're far enough out that it really feels like a Colorado mountain escape, but close enough to fun outdoor activities.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just spent a few days at this perfectly located home! It was a birthday celebration for my husband. Great home, great amenities, comfortable, clean and quiet! Plenty of wildlife too! You will love it!

"Functional" VRBO...NOT luxury - good location!

  • 3 of 5

Easy to find and a great 'staging area' to visit the local attractions in nearby towns. A few things re: this property:

1) While is does have 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms it only has 1 bathroom with a functioning shower (which is upstairs). So unless you are ok with a bath for your bathing needs then book accordingly (this was a bit of a challenge with 6 adults + 1 child).

2) The mattresses in the bunk beds received "thumbs down" from the teenagers that slept in them for the week (not supportive enough).

3) While TV and electronics are secondary in priority (for most of us anyway), the PS2 worked just fine (for teens) but the DVD player did not...again, ot that big of a deal but again it may be for some.

4) The kitchen eating area was problematic - there was not enough seating for the # of bedrooms. In other words, you could sleep 8, but there was seating only for 6 people and the table/chairs configuration actually blocked the opening and closing of the refrigerator door.

5) While the glass coffee table was very prettty, it took up a lot of the available living space in the living room. It was difficult to get around in the living room as a result.

6) The neighborhood roads (in this mountain subdivision) are NOT paved. We happened to visit during the summer "rainy season" (1st week of August - wherein it does rain pretty much every afternoon - so get your outdoor stuff done EARLY!). The roads have major erosion issues particularly on the sides wherein you might "walk", so not really any 'safe' places to walk around (if you are so inclined to walk to start / end your day). And no sidewalks and considerable drop off areas after the bigger rains...

Note - this is NOT a negative review. There are just a lot of "little things "that make this an average versus exceptional property IMO. Thus the 3-star rating.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your feedback. We appreciate your thoughts so we are able to make things better in the future. Your comments on the bunkbed mattress comfort has been noted--we've been systematically updating and replacing things as we're able (like the mattresses, etc.) to make things nicer. Also, we didn't realize the DVD player was damaged and have replaced that with a working one now. Thanks again! Holly and Mike

quiet mountain home

  • 3 of 5

Enjoyed the house. There was enough room for all of us. But with 3 children we needed a washer and dryer. I do not go on vacation to spend any time at a laundromat. Had I realized we could not use the washer and dryer when I booked the house I would not have booked it. Also the DVD player disk would never open so could not watch any of the movies. But the kids loved spending time in the fenced yard! And we enjoyed the mama deer and fawn that would come to visit every day.

Nice ....comfortable..........everything you need.

  • 4 of 5

Stayed 7-1 to 7-6-2017. Very nice and kitchen has everything you need. The only thing is the living room furniture is a little soft and needs to be more firm especially for an older person. Saw deer off the deck every day and a bear tipped over the secured trash barrels our last evening there. Major attractions only 10-15 miles away. Temps in the 70's during the days and 50's at night. When we left the morning 7-6 temp was in the low 50' back to Salina, KS. ....temp was 100..... major shock.... Will stay again.

Relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

This house is clean, had plenty of bedrooms, and even wi-fi. The owners gave great directions and tips. We saw many deer and a red fox. It was very close to the state park and close enough to Pikes Peak and Cave of the Winds. It was exactly what we needed for a relaxing stay. We recommend this cabin to everyone.

Great get away location

  • 4 of 5

The pictures don't do it justice. Rustic outside, modern inside. Very clean and comfortable and plenty of space. Loved sitting on the deck and looking at the stars each night. There were deer in the yard every day and they would come right up to us! We also saw a fox walk right by the lower patio door. The location is far enough out that you feel secluded but close enough to the attractions and necessities. We had a great experience at the cabin.
