Overview

About the property

2 bedrooms, 1 bath, kitchen, porch, private dock steps from the river, 7 acres

The Muskegon River Retreat is a quaint, clean, 2 bedroom cabin only steps from some of the finest cold water river fishing that Michigan has to offer. The river is approximately 200 feet wide and in mid-summer is often shallow enough to wade in front of the cabin. Please see our classified ad in Spring 2014 'Trout' magazine (by Trout Unlimited).

If you are looking for some of the finest spring and fall run steelhead fishing, congratulations you have found it. Steelhead as big as 20 lbs have been caught on flyrods by our spring 2014 guests. Easy access to the river increases your precious fishing time.

Each of the 2 bedrooms have 2 twin beds allowing capacity for 4 fishermen or feel free to push them together for 2 couples. You have the amenities to cook your own meals in the well appointed kitchen or barbecue outside on the gas grill. The cabin has a nice sitting area inside with wall to wall windows where you can unwind while watching the river.

The Muskegon River in front of the cabin is an excellent place for new fly anglers to learn the sport and experience success catching rainbows and browns on dry flys. Lots of room to cast, perfect paced water and epic hatches will not disappoint. We sincerely ask that you consider hook and release fishing for the majority of your catch...after all...the fish are the resource that keeps all of us coming back.

If you have your own drift or motor boat, renters may use the dock at the cabin to get a jump on the day, and the other fishermen. If you are in need of a guide for a day or several days, we refer clients to several of the finest guides on the river. Please inquire if you have interest as they do book out their schedules sometimes months in advance. The Retreat also has room to park boat trailers. The Pine Street public boat launch is convenient for launching of your own watercraft, just upstream.

This is a great place for families with kids. Imagine your kids catching fish from the dock and chasing crayfish, frogs and turtles with a net. Your kids will build memories that will last a lifetime. As with most rivers, while wet wading, we recommend wearing river shoes and proper waders for colder days. Flotation devices are also recommended.

It's a comfortable cabin and your family or friends will love it. Even in the winter, you will be astounded at the quality of the fishing. Give the Muskegon River Retreat a try this year and you won't be disappointed.

About Mike Moldal

Our family has owned what now is called the Muskegon River Retreat for over 50 years. Bob headed the mortgage loan department for Old Kent Bank and Jeanne was an elementary school teacher. Bob has been well known in the Grand Rapids area as an avid steelheader and has fished the river all of his life. Over the years, Bob has made several significant improvements, but the Retreat retains its charm, simplicity and wonderful river frontage. We've taken pride in the property and hope you enjoy it as much as we have.

Mike Moldal purchased this cabin in 1964

Why Mike Moldal chose West Central

Why would you choose this property over others? Two reasons come to mind immediately. #1 is the prime river front location. This cabin isn't on a bluff isolated from the river, it has access to the river around the clock. Steelhead and chinhook salmon from Lake Michigan return in the Spring and Fall to spawn. Just upstream, Croton Dam is the first barrier to the spawning run, so the mile or so below the dam (our location) becomes loaded with big fish. The spawning fish produce eggs, smolt and flesh that steelhead, rainbows, browns, and walleyes eat. The location provides a great starting point to float, row or motor. Reason #2...Fish are plentiful and often can be large in size. Don't be surpised to catch 3 - 5 species of fish in one day. If you haven't held on to a 15+ lb steelhead on a fly rod or spey rod, you need to experience it. And if you like to dry fly fish (of course you do), one of our epic caddis or mayfly hatches will make you shake your head in disbelief.

What makes this cabin unique

What we love most about the Muskegon River Retreat is the tranquility of the river. In this day of constant distractions, it is nice to put it all away for a few days and focus on you, your friends, your family and a lazy river. Late afternoons and evenings are a favorite time when the tubers have gone and the river is quiet and peaceful. Because of the convenient access to this upper stretch of river, you'll feel like you have your own private beat for the evening hatch. There's nothing like finding your casting rhythm while sharing memories with those closest to you.

Shuttle services can be hired to move your vehicle to the take out while you fish.

Beautiful property, locale and accommodations! Highly Recommended!

  • 4 of 5

The Muskegon River Retreat is a great getaway on the Muskegon River! The cabin is very well appointed, comfortable, and has many nice amenities. It has many personal touches reflecting many seasons of family enjoyment of the outdoors and the river. Early mornings are the best with fog rolling across the river and bald eagles high in the trees. We will be back!

Muskegon fishing retreat

  • 4 of 5

We had a absolutely wonderful time renting this cabin on the river. It was in a fishing location that I knew well and the access to the river was very good. The accommodations were perfect and slept four big guys without any problem and included all the comforts of home. The kitchen provisions were very helpful, with everything we needed. The owner's instruction for arriving and leaving explained everything clearly.

I would recommend this place to anyone, but I would also prefer to selfishly keep it a hidden gem. :)

The only downside was that we were there during beautifully cool evenings that would have been ideal for campfires at the adjacent fire pit, however, previous renters were irresponsible and made it so campfires were no longer allowed.

Owner's Response: Hi Jason, Thank you for your kind review. I am so glad our cabin provided enough space for even 4 good sized guys. It is unfortunately true that we are no longer allowing campfires. The seclusion of our location and absence of fire hydrants unfortunately makes for higher risk. Although most renters (but not all) are responsible, we have to respect our remote river neighbors and reduce the potential risk of a campfire becoming a wildfire. We hope this won't dissuade you from returning, it's just smart practice. Thank you again for being our guests. Mike

What you see is what you get. The pictures are perfect. Just what I imagine and more.

I can say enough how relaxing it was to sit on the porch in the morning with a cup of coffee looking at the river and hearing the birds in the background. Sitting on the dock watching the fish, wishing we would have brought a pole... We road motorcycles so we had limited room. It was priceless.... Couldn't have had a more relaxing time. Would definitely go back again.

Owner's Response: Diane, Thank you for your kind words. I'm so glad you liked the seclusion of our location and proximity of that amazing river. It is definitely a soul cleansing place. I like your suggestion, we will try to add some "community fishing rods" to the cabin next year, as long as guests take care of them. We hope to have you back soon.

Clean, comfortable and homey cabin, on a beautiful river was a perfect place for our 3 day get away!

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our get away at this clean and comfortable cabin. The driveway leading to the cabin was a great indicator of the nature and seclusion we would enjoy. Was fun watching the fish and crayfish in the river, and hearing the variety of birds (I even saw an eagle a couple times). We did not have a fishing license or gear, but would definitely recommend them to anyone considering this rental. Also, I wish we had taken time to do a canoe or tube trip. Most of the area activities that we found revolved around the river and the woods. If this is what you are looking for, this place is for you. We were also looking to do some sightseeing, as this was our first trip to Michigan, but found it to be quite a drive to see the sights we wanted to see. I believe our trip could have been even better if we had taken more time to relax and enjoy nature, rather than doing so much driving. We were there on the hottest week of the year, all the days were in the 90's, so an air conditioner would have been nice, but being on the river, and under trees, it wasn't that bad. Mike-the owner, was very friendly and helpful.

Florida Fisherman

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was very clean and extremely well equipped. Lots of good quality pans, which is unusual. We went salmon fishing with a guide and caught some trout flyfishing as well. The view from the couch through the windows of the Muskegon River trees was wonderful. We'll be back.

Perfect weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

Three friends and I wanted to get away from it all and found this great little cabin on the Muskegon River. It was very peaceful and while there were a few neighbors on both sides (100 yards away), it felt like we were all alone and that is exactly what we were looking for. The cabin had everything you need to make it very comfortable: well stocked kitchen (pots, pans, spices, coffee, oven, microwave, dish soap), bathroom: (soap, shampoo, toilet paper, etc.) and outdoor area (propane grill, picnic table, benches and two very nice wooden chairs! We really couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. It's also very conveniently located between downtown Newaygo and Croton-Hardy Dam (5-10 minutes). Highly recommended!!!

About 10 miles upstream from Newaygo you will find the quiet river town of Croton, Michigan. Croton is a small town on the banks of one of the Muskegon River impoundments. Lake fishing and boating is available on Croton Pond. The town of Croton has available ammenities year-round including a grocery store, restaurants, ice cream shop, a bar and grill and a gas station. The major draw for the area is the Muskegon River and Croton Dam is the furthest upstream that steelhead and salmon can migrate. Fly hatches, spawning fish and small smolt are in abundance so the trout fishing is excellent. The Muskegon River Retreat is about 1.5 miles downstream from Croton Dam near the Pine Street access point (free boat launch access).
