About Tanya Candia
When Xavier and Tanya Candia first saw it in 2004, the 400 year old stone house had been abandoned for more than 50 years and was in ruins. Today it has been completely rebuilt using the original materials and the finest craftsmanship. It is an oasis of peace and tranquility yet close to all of Umbria and Tuscany.
Tanya Candia purchased this Estate in 2004
Why Tanya Candia chose Perugia
We chose to rebuild this unique villa because of its historic charm and unbelievable views. After 8 years of hard work, the dream is a reality, and now our guests can spend their days basking in sunshine, swimming in the infinity pool overlooking the magnificent valley, or strolling through the orchards of this private, secluded, utterly peaceful ancient Italian villa. In the evening, they can cook up their own Italian gourmet dinners, or eat in one of the award-winning local restaurants, savoring local olive oil, truffles and wines. During the summer and autumn, they visit festas and sagras in nearby villages where they mingle with the local people and taste the best of Umbrian regional cuisine. It's a quick train ride to Florence for a day of sightseeing, or a short car trip to spend the day on the beaches of the Adriatic, yet be back in time for a leisurely dinner al fresco. Although not on an active fault zone, the house has been reconstructed to the highest international earthquake protection standards.
What makes this Estate unique
This house is one of the jewels of Umbria. Situated on a dramatic hillside, it boasts spectacular views. The Vigne Suite adjoins the Olivi Suite, and together they accommodate 10 - 12 people. Two additional bedrooms in the main house are also available for rental, for a total of 14-16 people. It's the perfect spot to relax, unwind, and still be very close to all the action. Three-foot thick walls and high ceilings plus private patio and parking make it like renting an entire house. Decorations come from our travels around the world, and a full kitchen and Weber barbecue make your stay relaxing while you enjoy the unique culinary treats of Umbria.

Wonderful place to unwind
We loved our stay here and will definitely be back. It was a little piece of heaven. Comfortable villa, stunning views and sunsets, cooling breezes and a wonderful swimming pool to relax beside. Tanya was amazing, so warm, welcoming, wonderful with our children and so incredibly generous. An amazing find for us. Location was perfect, so much to hand, beautiful villages, Rome, Florence, Perugia, Assisi all within a comfortable distance. Decent sized shops and bakeries not too far away. Our boys were so sad to leave, as were we. Definitely recommend this property.
The winding roads to Fratticola Selavatica was the start of a wonderful exciting adventure . For us being from Holland, it was a worth while treat! With the help of Anna, we found ourselves taken to a steep downward road, that led to the most breathtaking views. The converted farmhouse is beautifully restored. Tanya and Xavior very gracious hosts!
We were a group of 8, five adults and 3 teenagers . We had two suites. From the moment we came, we were enamored with the serenity and beauty of our surroundings and view. The lovely salt water infinity pool was a soothing and refreshing welcome from the hot climate. We spent much our time at the pool.
Tanya and Xavior had a vision when they restored and created this place. Of course one could nick pick a couple of the minor details that comes when renting a holiday home, however they are new to the game and with every guest they will be very seasoned with what family's with kids or teenagers needs are.
We were fortunate enough to be there for their annual barbecue for the amazing people who helped them create their home. Thank you for including us! We all had such a wonderful time.
Definatly a car is needed! The location is perfect point to explore Umbria. Cannot tell you how interesting and charming the landscape and surrounding city's are. Tanya suggested one of their favorite places to eat that is not to far from the house. It is called L' Osteria Del Bosco. What a treat!! One of the best meals we had during our two week stay. Highly recommend ! Another spot was in Spoleto, it is called Casina Dell Ippocasiano / cafe bistro. It offered one of the best menus for our vegetarian companion . Tanya and Xavior, much thanks, our hellos to Alex and Chris. We will definatly pass the word about your beautiful serene place. Susanne and I would like to extend an invitation to both. If your ever out, our way! From the whole gang/ Hauge and SF,
Thanks again, incredible two weeks!!

Wake up in truffle country
We thoroughly enjoyed our month at this villa. The views were exceptional especially around the pool at sunset with a glass of wine. The villa, although looking old, is actually brand new with all the amenities for a comfortable stay. The owners made good suggestions of places to visit, none of which were very far away. We really enjoyed visiting all the small hill towns of Umbria which have only begun to be discovered by tourists and the roadside views were spectacular. We would definitely recommend this property to friends and hope to return one day.
Christmas in Umbria
We stayed in this spacious unit over Christmas vacation. While it was a little cold and foggy in the Umbrian valley below, the hilltop units were generally above the fog and afforded incredible views. The unit had everything we could want, stove, oven, frig, silverware dishes, towels and even extra blankets. Everything was first class and high quality. Located in the tiny town of Fratticiola Salvatica, it was simply charming. The bakery, church, coffee bar and grocery store were right around the corner and the people were warm and friendly. They didn't even mind our faltering attempts at Italian and more often than not responded with perfect English. We plan to return but only when we can spend a month or more, there are so many places yet to explore.
Christmas time vacation!
Thanks for the wonderful accommodations. The vistas were incredible. This villa has it all, super modern kitchen and bath and lots of room to spread out and just kick back. Although we visited in the winter, our apartment was warm and cozy. There is lots to do, with easy drives to most major attractions. Can't wait to come back in the summer and lounge by the marvelous infinity pool!
A Gorgeous and Delicious Umbrian Getaway
Villa Candia is an exceptional property and value. The apartment was well appointed, especially for demanding American guests (like me;-). The views of the Umbrian hillside from any room in the place were magnificent at any time of day, and there was an abundance of peace and quiet to reflect, enjoy the gorgeous wine and food of the region, and/or plan for a day trip to a neighboring city. I easily traveled by train to experience Florence, and Perugia, as well as Deruda (the ceramics capital of Italy), were a short drive away. I traveled alone so the accommodations were more space than I needed, and, yes, the bed was comfortable! Actually, the entire apartment was extremely clean and stylishly decorated and included fresh flowers from the surrounding beautiful gardens. I must share, as a "picky" American, that the modern bathroom (complete with bidet, glass-enclosed shower, and a heated towel rack!) were a welcome sight after having stayed at other guest houses and apartments in the area. Even nicer than a lot of hotels in Europe!
The owners have a good pulse on what vacationers want to experience in Umbria and delivered in spades. They even allowed me to peek into the other apartment and I found it equally beautiful with lots of well-positioned windows.
The villa is about a 2 hour ride from Rome into the Umbrian hillside; the spectacular views make the trip so worthwhile!
Ciao for now, as I will return!
Villa Candia is a 400-year-old manor house with a spectacular hillside location in Umbrian truffle country. A short drive takes you to medieval villages as well as major Umbrian cities including Assisi, Perugia, Gubbio, Spoleto or Orvieto. When you tire of sitting on the terrace, soaking up the sun at the infinity pool or visiting local wineries, you can easily drive to Sienna or Florence, or the beaches of the Adriatic. The house, although not on an active fault zone, is built to the highest international earthquake protection standards.
