Great family, summer cottage well stocked with family games, great books to read and lots of spots to relax in. We are third generation owners, so we have been in the Indian Neck neighborhood since the beginning and love to share the beauty of this area with others. The house is located just one block from Long Island Sound with private association rights to three separate beaches, all with a view of the Thimble Islands. The house is 1424 sq feet and has four bedrooms. Two bedrooms have two sets of twin beds; one bedroom has a king bed and a first floor bedroom has a queen size bed. The screened in porch is facing southeast offering a morning porch for sunrises. You can see the water from the porch between houses. The surrounding area is great for long walks, rollerblading and biking. Outside shower to rinse off when you come up from activities down at the beach. It is a very casual home, a quintessential beach cottage where you can enjoy a relaxing, stress free, summer atmosphere.
Within a short drive or a mile walk away are Lenny's Seafood restaurant, Indian Neck Pizza, and Bud's Seafood market. A great local farm stand market offers fresh fruit and vegetables. Also only a mile walk up the road is the Owenego Inn. Here you can sit on the patio, enjoy dinner and watch the sunset over the water. Branford Harbor is within paddling distance.
Available beginning May 2013
The owner has a beautiful beach property -- we did not want to leave. It was meticulous (gorgeous bedrooms and hardwood throughout) and stocked with amenities. We had access to the charcoal grill and indoor/outdoor games for our two boys. We were also surprised as it appears to be the owner's personal decor (versus just rental decor). We felt like we were in our home and thus treated it as such. For future Yale reunions I look forward to staying at this summer cottage!
I would rather not share this review as I would like to keep this rental to myself! We stayed here while attending Yale Commencement. It was quiet and peaceful. The walks along the shore were wonderful. The house itself is well taken care of and well stocked. There are ample serving dishes, spices and cookware. A basket of goodies including coffee and chocolate was left for us. Instructions were clear in terms of entry. The screened in porch was a favorite, as was the hammock. There are beach supplies and beach towels, a picnic table and a grill. We enjoyed the supply of books for all ages. I would highly recommend this property. It is even more lovely than depicted by the photos.
We're so glad that we stumbled upon this property rental for our vacation with family. The pictures don't come close to doing it justice. It's a charming, casual beach cottage that's appropriately decorated, in a fabulous neighborhood called Pawson Park.
The cottage itself is very comfortable with a well-appointed kitchen, large screened-in sun-room, living room with a flat screen tv and DVD player, and a front yard with a huge picnic table and lawn chairs---all only feet from the shore line.
We cooked, played games, entertained, walked the beach, swam (even in late Sept), star-gazed, and enjoyed many of the area restaurants (King's lobster pound is just a short walk away, and in our opinion has the best lobster ever). At first, we were a little leery of the steep stairs that lead to the upstairs bedrooms, but my 80 year old parents negotiated the climb with no problems at all. The master bedroom (huge king bed) and 1/2 bath next door was perfect for them. They had their own big flat screen tv to watch when they needed a little privacy and a half bath next door.
We'd all stay at this cottage again in a heart beat. Thanks Mary and John!
My family was in search of a rental on the CT shore and luck brought us to this lovely, comfortable, perfectly appointed home near relaxing private beaches. My husband, daughter, son, and mother loved every moment we spent in this historic yet beautifully maintained "summer cottage."
The four bedrooms provided the perfect breakdown of beds for our group, and every one of us slept peacefully in our respective havens. The kitchen is well-equipped and we were able to complement our dinners out (at Lenny's!) and take-out pizza (from Pacileo's!) with home-cooked meals of soup and grilled fish (which my husband caught, just steps from the house). The full bathroom has a nice large shower, much appreciated by my tall family, and the outdoor shower was a great way to rinse off after swimming.
I think the screen porch may have been my favorite spot, though. With its wide variety of comfy seating options and view of the garden and the water, it really was the place to sit with a cool drink (or hot cup of tea) and let the vacation feeling sink in...
Proximity to the beach was wonderful ~ we even went down to watch the "super moon" rise and got some great photos! My teenaged daughter, an avowed pool swimmer, braved the salty Sound waters and enjoyed herself immensely. My son, a beginning swimmer, felt secure enough to jump off the diving board and was justifiably proud of his feat.
The homeowners could not have been more pleasant or helpful, and people we met in neighboring homes were delightful and friendly as well. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our time on Indian Neck and are hoping we will be back again next summer!
We just loved our week in the Summer Cottage at 10 Maltby St. (Indian Neck)! We were there from Aug. 9 - 16. I come from NH; my daughter & family came from San Francisco. We met the owner on arrival and everyone was crazy about the house immediately. My grandson (11) loved the "Pilot's room" upstairs. The master bedroom has the largest king size bed ever, facing east, toward the water. My granddaughter (15) claimed the downstairs bedroom with queen bed and sky light. The listing was totally accurate regarding location. The photos are good but the house and environs are much more wonderful than the photos! Everything was clean and well-maintained. The owner was gracious and very helpful in every regard. I would totally recommend this property to a friend or relative. We loved watching the full-moon rise, sunrises, a sky full of stars (very little surface light on beach at night). My son-in-law spent many hours fishing off the jetty and along the coast (near property). We had dinner at Lenny's, bought fresh produce from the near-by farm stand, and fish from Bud's. I could have stayed in and around the house all week! Some of our excursions were: Mystic Aquarium, Yale University (Peabody Museum and tour of campus), Jazz concert on the Branford Green, hiking on the trail in Stony Creek (through the marsh area), and wandering around the town of Branford. My daughter, granddaughter, and I visited one of the local spas for massages and pedicures. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say, we had a very memorable week in this cottage which has so much character, in a location which offers many options for people of all ages! We really liked the multi-generational atmosphere. Everyone in the neighborhood was friendly and helpful. Thank you Mary and John!!!
If you are up for a more active day choose from Thimble Island Tours, Mystic Sea Aquarium, Gillette Castle, or Mystic Seaport! Chamard Vineyards is just 2 miles from Long Island Sound and 13 miles from Branford. Enjoy a beautiful sunset kayak tour through Thimble Islands. Bluefin Charters offers sport fishing or a lighthouse cruise. Rainy days offer a chance to explore Peabody Museum, Connecticut Childrens Museum, and the extraordinary hands on Children Science Museum.
