Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Sunny, 3 Bedroom, Close To The Lake, Seashore, Trails, And Town

Our home is a newly renovated, old house. It is cozy, sunny, clean, and has a huge kitchen, making it a perfect vacation home for a family or small group of vacationers. This is our home in which we live for most of the year, but the nature of our work means that we have weeks and weekends during which we are gone and it is available. We always have it professionally cleaned, and try to clean out some of our personal belongings to make it as comfortable for our guests. But please note that it is a home, not just a rental house. There are three bedrooms and one bath with shower and claw foot tub. The house is on a beautiful property of meadow on a hill with a beautiful view. It is right down the road from a lakefront beach, and the rails-to-trails. The cove in Chester Basin has a sweet restaurant right on the water where you can get local fresh fish. It is located within 5 minutes of the beautiful town of Chester, which has bakery's, restaurants, summer farmer's market, golfing, beachfront, theatre, pubs, a skate park. We are also close to Mahone Bay and Lunenburg - both beautiful towns with farmers markets, shops, restaurants, cafes, museums, etc. We are also in close proximity to perfect day trips to many beautiful beaches all along the South Shore. Our property is a perfect getaway to enjoy all the South Shore has to offer, all through the four seasons!

About Elizabeth

We are both originally from the US - New York City and Connecticut and are citizens of Canada as well. We've lived in Nova Scotia since 2008. Nick is a musician - drums and percussion, and a choral conductor. I'm a landscape designer. Nick has been vacationing on the South Shore of Nova Scotia since he was a child. We spend as much time as we can sailing through the islands of the South Shore (when we're not working, of course!).

Elizabeth purchased this house in 2012

Why Elizabeth chose Chester

This house was built about 100 years ago and has had a lot of work done to it before we bought it. The land was a huge attraction. We love the South Shore and work in Halifax, so it is just out of town enough to feel like we're in the country but still have a fairly easy commute into the city. We love to be close to Chester, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg. We love to sail, so being close to the ocean is essential.

What makes this house unique

The kitchen is huge, the sun shines on the front porch and through the front windows in the morning and brightens our back yard, meadow, and kitchen with the most beautiful light all afternoon into the evening. The meadow is full of lupins, fruit trees, and other wildflowers, and has pathways up to the top of the hill that looks out over the basin and nearly 360 degrees around. There is a beautiful old willow in the backyard.

Family Fun Time

  • 5 of 5

6 adults and 3 kids piled in for a great weekend. Very homey - elegant, old-school, Maritime feel. Kitchen was well-stocked with tools and spices, etc. Beautiful property - we had a magnificent sunset supper at the picnic table on Saturday night. Also an easy walk to a little lake nearby - the kids swam and the adults paddle-boarded. Short drive to Chester for fish and chips and a walk around town. Elizabeth was exceptionally easy to work with when it came to organizing our stay. All in all an awesome little spot!

The village of Chester Basin has a post office, grocery store, and a local restaurant called the Seaside Shanty (open seasonally). It's conveniently located one mile from the ocean and the town of Chester Basin, a 5 minute walk to a lakefront community beach, a 6 minute drive to the Village of Chester, 15 Minutes from the town of Mahone Bay, 25min from historic Lunenburg, 45 minutes from the city of Halifax, under an hour from Annapolis Royal in the Valley. It is right on the rails-to-trails that connects to Chester and Mahone bay, which is said to be one of the more beautiful parts of the trail.

There are beautiful beaches nearby, tons of sailing, multiple farmers markets throughout the week, restaurants, theatre, hikes, fishing, surfing - we would be more than happy to give anyone advise on what to do around the area. Our house is also a great place to just relax in the sunny yard, cook, go on walks, or sit at the lakeside beach.
