Open Floor Plan with Spectacular Ocean Views
Refugio de las Mariposas is a beautiful & spacious 2,400 sq. ft. beach home with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean from every room. Designed with physical comfort and visual delight in mind, and constructed of native materials, tropical hardwoods and rock, the house exudes an air of tranquility and communicates seamlessly with its natural environs. Refugio is a rustic, yet fully functional retreat!
An open 'Great Room' area, with three king-size sleeper couches and a fully equipped kitchen, leads onto a terrace where a dipping pool flows over the infinity edge waterfall down to a lower pool.
An upper deck, accessed by a spiral staircase from the pool terrace, provides breathtaking panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean to the south and the local mountains to the north. This deck, lovingly referred to as "Tortuga Terrace" is an excellent spot for viewing the monthly arrivals of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtles on Playa Ostional below. Seated at the wooden bar, one might also spy whales, dolphins, and surfers....or just enjoy gazing at sky, sea, and jungle while sipping morning coffee and feeling like you are "on top of the world!"
Master bedrooms are roomy and located on opposite sides of the house. Each has a canopy bed draped with tropical mosquito netting, a private terrace, and a bathroom with grotto-like shower which also faces the ocean view. You feel like you are taking a shower in a waterfall!
Four shady terraces and a 'Sunbathing Stargazing' lower deck with white water views are designed for relaxing in a rocking chair, swinging in a hammock, reading, or observing tropical birds and monkeys in the natural jungle setting.
Lovingly decorated with comfortable, tropical decor, this home is a short walk down to the beach for surfing, strolling the shoreline, or watching the monthly cycle of nesting and hatching of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtles.
Other amenities include weekly maid service, on-site laundry room, ceiling fans, alarm, a safe, night guard, gated community entrance, a land line phone, and WiFi.
Great for families, surfers, and perfect for you if you are looking for a quiet spot, great surf, ocean views and a walk to the beach in a gorgeous setting!

About Nosara Travel
I am a retired kindergarten teacher who loves to travel and discovered this precious spot some time ago. My family and I have put a lot of love and care into making this a magical retreat.
Nosara Travel purchased this House in 2006
Why Nosara Travel chose Cantón Santa Cruz
My son was working at a surf school in Playa Guiones and on a lark I found this hilltop property. I was a part of the design and construction from the very beginning. For me, being away from the hustle and bustle of Guiones, nestled in the jungle with this amazing view, fills my soul.
What makes this House unique
This property is not a club-med experience. The views are truly spectacular. The beach is close. There are other great beaches nearby (San Juanillo and Guiones). You can explore many neat locales around every corner and come back to the comforts of our 'Refugio'.

We spent a little longer than a week and the only problem we encountered was the fact that we didn't know about this place before.
The house has a million dollar view, refreshing, with plenty of room in which you can choose to see the sunset at the pool, deck, room or balcony.
The house is well equipped with everything as needed (Maybe a portable fan would make a trick) location is astonishing, very close to Nosara and near beaches.
Raquel's assistance was amazing, very kind and supportive. Always looking to enhance our experience.
We will definitely come back
It was such a pleasure to read your review and our family is delighted that you enjoyed your vacation at our "Refugio de las Mariposas" beach home.
Thanks for mentioning how much you valued Raquel's assistance. We agree that she is a treasure!
We appreciate you for taking the time to write and tell us about your holiday experience. =^>
Incredible views & Great location!
This is a wonderful house with incredible views of the ocean and close enough you can listen to the waves all day & night. The living space is very comfortable and open. We really enjoyed the moon/roof deck- where you can star gaze at night or just be mesmerized by the view all day long.
The kitchen is well stocked! We truly enjoyed cooking meals and of course mixing up some pina coladas. There was plenty of space for all 4 of us adults to be in there cooking and cleaning up.
The windows and doors all open so you can enjoy the breezes and sounds of nature surrounding the house. It was plenty cool at night with the breezes and fans going and stayed comfortable during the day as well.
This house is close to wonderful beaches including Playa Ostional. We enjoyed going to town for food at Los Tortugas or driving into Nosora to eat at Rancho Tico. There's great grocery shopping in Nosora as well.
We visited Playa Guiones several times to shop, eat and swim at the beach. My husband and I both took surfing lessons at Cacho's- ask for Steve- he was wonderful to learn from! While there you should definitely eat at Al Chile and order the passion fruit mojito!
I highly recommend this house for your vacation to Costa Rica!
Thanks a million for your charming review! We, the owners, agree that our beach home has a special "vibe" of comfortable seclusion with spectacular ocean views! As you say, the rooftop "Tortuga Terrace" is unique and a totally cool spot to hang out, day or night. We appreciate you for taking the time to write such a kind endorsement.
Amazing Location and Beautiful Views!
Four of us stayed here for a week starting November 11, 2016 and could not be happier with the house, views, Raquel (who helped every step of the way, even had pizza delivered to the house by speaking with the local restaurant staff who normally don't deliver on the night we arrived) and the beautiful surroundings that we got to enjoy day and night!
First off, this was our first time to Costa Rica, and are we glad we did not do an all inclusive resort! There was so much to be seen in the area surrounding the house, as well as having a rental car to take us up to Tamarindo (1 hour and 30 minute drive) and Playa Guiones (about 30-35 minute drive). We enjoyed spending the majority of our days hanging out at the pool and taking in the breathtaking views the house provides! We were woken up pretty much every morning by the howler monkeys (who sound completely terrifying not knowing exactly what it is making the noise lol).
The house itself is beautiful! Tons of space! The landscaping around the house is beautiful and lush! We did meet the cleaner and the gardener one day before we left to go out, both were very pleasant!
The only negative thing I would have to say about staying here is the army ants. We read through all the information provided and knew that they may come and visit while we were there and that they may stay about an hour or so, which would have been fine. Unfortunately, they stayed for more than 5 hours. I understand they are there to do a job and they help clean out the bugs and whatnot from the floors and walls, but it was a little overwhelming as we did expect them to leave after 1 hour. Again, it's the only negative thing I could speak to for the entire 7 days we were there! ** They only came once the entire time we were there.
Also, Albin (the driver who picked us up from the airport and took us to the house the day we arrived) returned my partner's sunglasses which we had left accidentally in the van when switching vehicles. It was much appreciated!
All in all, we had an AMAZING vacation! We could not be happier with where we stayed and again, all the help provided by Raquel! Such a great experience! We would definitely love to come back again sometime and explore even more of this beautiful country!
Our family is so pleased you had such a great vacation at our beach home! Thank you for your kind words, and especially your compliments for Raquel,...who so ably assisted you! We think she's pretty special too!
Refugio de las Mariposas was everything we expected! Our group was made up of three couples, and there was plenty of room for us to have private space. The view is gorgeous, and the showers being outdoors made it easy to see and hear the ocean at all times! This house is off the beating path, so be prepared for bumpy roads and keep close tabs on directions. The staff and locals were very friendly and helpful. This vacation was one that will be hard to beat. Thank you!
I KNOW...... I couldn't agree more that the white-water ocean view from our family beach retreat is absolutely "breathtaking." Thank you for your highly complimentary review! It is delightful to learn that your group enjoyed yourselves and were comfortable and happy during your stay.
A Wonderful Vacation Retreat!
We had the most wonderful and relaxing stay in this little piece of paradise just outside of Nosara. We had the most amazing time walking down to see hundreds to near thousands of turtles laying their eggs on the beach down the hill (no more than a ten minute walk!), hanging out in the infinite pool (even during a torrential downpour), and watching the sunset from the balcony. We loved waking up to the sound of birds and monkeys (a mommy and baby even visited us one morning), and falling asleep to the sound of the waves (you can even see the ocean in BED!). We loved making meals in the fully stocked kitchen, and the house is well looked after with two visits during our nine day stay by the pool guy, maid and gardener. This home is VERY private with really no neighbors around and the area is gated. I have traveled to over 60 countries and this villa is in the top five places I have ever visited. We will definitely be coming back when we make it back to Costa RIca.
Thank you for your splendid review! it is particularly impressive to note your comment that our family's beach retreat is among the top five places you have visited in your travels around the globe. Your detailed description of your vacation is most heartwarming and your recommendation is much appreciated!
The new year is here and on this wintry morning I'm blessed to write of my cherished memories of our trip of a lifetime while staying at the refuge of the butterflies. We arrived to our friends waving warmly from the porch while just across the driveway howler monkeys also enthusiastically greeted us. The end of the rainy season showcased the lush and blooming gardens that make this retreat a refuge for more than just the butterflies. Early morning songs from parakeets flashed by in green-feathered flocks. Kiskadees sipped from the deck's infinity pool. Lizards and geckos wandered nearby. The warm evenings were beyond beautiful. Sometimes storms mixed sea and air into a wet curtain display of grey grandeur. Sunsets spanned the horizon for hours in a palette of impossible hues. Insect eating bats and pulsing lightening bugs filled the darkening skies. Then the full moon and so many stars would accompany us to bed, where the surf's lullabies softly sang us to sleep. All of this amazing natural beauty is so comfortably enjoyed from within or from the decks of this incredible casa. A gracious communal kitchen and living space sits in between two lovely bedrooms, both with outdoor showers, and there is a view of the tropical forest, descending to the sandy beach and 180' view of the westward horizon from anywhere in the house. Other natural wonders that graced our trip was witnessing the olive ridley turtle's simultaneous laying and hatching of their eggs, and two sightings of the blue morpho butterfly. Our adventures included snorkeling, a zip line tour and delicious dinners at both Treetops and Luna Azul. I truly hope we may visit this refuge again one day.
Thank you for your beautifully expressed and poetic description of your Thanksgiving vacation at our family beach home! Pura Vida! "0)
