Classic Squam Summer House with Hilltop Views, Dock, Beach, Tennis, Charm

  • 5 of 5

We loved our week at High Orchard. The house is spacious, charming and well-equipped, with big, bright rooms, many large windows overlooking expansive mountain views, a perfect screen porch. The old-fashioned summer house kitchen and baths were part of the appeal. We had great weather for outdoor living: daily hikes, swims and exploring back roads and small towns. On our one rainy day we enjoyed feeling at home in the large and well furnished living and dining rooms and the five comfortable bedrooms spread out on two floors. Later we had big views of a double rainbow, pink clouds and a rising moon. Loon calls float up from the lake and the house faces east so early risers can watch the sky turn red over the mountains. The beach and dock are a 5 minute drive away in a shared cove, with rocks and a raft to swim to and pristine Squam water. Great tennis court, pleasant walk down hill to the store and town, peaceful and scenic Old Squam summer colony neighborhood. The Desloge family, third generation owners and curators of this idyllic retreat, could not be more welcoming and helpful. We are eager to return.

Breath Taking

  • 5 of 5

We were beyond thrilled with ~the ease of booking, courteous home owners, breath taking surroundings and all the amenities this charming home has to offer. We found every thing to be just as described in listing. It was stocked with sheets, towels, and every sort of kitchen or beach accessory we could ever need. Especially appreciated a fan in each bedroom for a few humid nights.

The home's dock and boathouse is less than a 5min drive. It was quiet and peaceful. If you are like us and find it a slight challenge to be certain you are at the right one, the homeowner can send you a detailed video that was really helpful.

The location is excellent. We enjoyed going to the Science Center, Weirs Beach/ Drive In, Outlet shopping in Tilton, General Store in Ashland and Moultonbourough, antiquing in Plymouth, hiking Rattlesnake Mt, or exploring Castle in the Clouds.

While this is an older home, it has been well cared for. We wondered if we would be disappointed to not be staying directly on Squam with direct water view. However as we think back to our stay, what stands out to us are the breath taking sunrises from behind the mountains and flooding light through the entire house. The sounds of loons calling in the evenings on the screened porch. The double rainbow that spread across the mountains on a drizzly evening.

We can't wait to return and thank the homeowners for affording us a wonderful vacation week!

Historic Squam Lake Summer Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This lovely house accommodated our three generation family reunion beautifully. The view from the screened porch, large spaces for dining and many activities, and the peaceful Squam Lake dock/ swimming cove a mile away were all unique. We kept our kayaks down at the boathouse all week.

The house is well-equipped and the many beds are comfortable. The host was welcoming and responsive to our arrangements and questions. We knew Squam Lake well already, but he would be very helpful to folks who are not familiar with the area.

My family with small children and extended family rented this home for a last minute trip July 4th week. We really loved the home and the area. Every time I walked thru the living room and dining room I made sure to take in the amazing view of the mountains. The screened in porch was our favorite afternoon spot. The dining room is perfect for large family dinners with the view and sunsets you will dine for hours. We had lovely dinners out in the area, delicious upscale picnic food from the squam lake store, organic veggies every day from Owens Farm, local hikes and hikes just a short drive to the Franconia Notch area, tennis in the mornings and a couple days of peaceful boat rides. It is such a peaceful lake compared to many in the area. The homes are built back from the water to blend with the landscape. True natural beauty.

The owners were extremely helpful with all information regarding the home and area prior to the visit. The home is very special place. Not for someone looking for a modern home or one that is not free of an occasional summer bug or two.

Highly recommended!!
