Playa Chiquita is nestled between the more know town of Puerto Viejo and the Nation Refuge of Manzanillo. It's know for its great restaurants, yoga center and massage therapists but the hidden jewel is its beach. Playa Chiquita is all about relaxing, slowing down and enjoying what's around you. If you stay more then two days you'll be know by name and everywhere you go people say hello.
Walking is the #1 mode of transportation, bicycle is #2, bus is #3 (very reliable safe and cheap), and of course the old fashion way #4 hitching. You will be surprised how many can get on a bicycle!!!!!
The town itself has about 20+ businesses and they come from many different countries & cultures in addition to Costa Rica: Africa, Argentina, Britain, Canada, Cuba, France, Germany, Japan, Nicaragua, Portugal, Switzerland, United States and Venezuela but most everyone knows English or enough to help you.
There is live entertainment at Labiela our place for dancing to calypso/reggae or listening to classic rock, jazz, Latin, and the good old rhythm and blues. They have different singers & entertainers most every night so it always makes for an interesting walk into town. In the morning if you don't want to stay and have breakfast at home walk down to a great breakfast and good cup of coffee at La Organica Botanica (wifi available and good music too) 8am-3pm closed on Mon.
Within an hour of town you can see a lot of things on your own, walk or bike down to the organic cocoa plantation and watch how chocolate is made and sample some real hot coco, go further to Punta Uva and snorkel or kayak in the coral reefs or even further to Manzanillo and Monkey Point to explore Punta Mona an 85 acre permaculture farm and learn how to live off the grid. (If you're lucky enough to be there in the green season July to Oct that's when the leatherback, loggerhead, and green sea turtles are nesting on the beach)
North from Playa Chiquita you can walk or bike to the Jaguar Rescue Center then on and rent a surfboard and try surfing at Coclé's beach then to Puerto Viejo and shop at the market's enjoying the day just being in a bigger town. You'll find some good restaurants in Puerto Viejo too.
Places further then that you will need a car but certainly worth the time: the town of Cahuita has a wonderful national park and swimming cove, it also has the sloth sanctuary (lovely day drive) and on your way back turn at HoneCreek and head toward Bri Bri about 5-10 minutes and you will see a little sign in front of a house on the right in the middle of nowhere, she makes chocolate and coconut products. Trust me you will not be disappointed. I buy them as gift's and they never make it back. She has about 20 different flavors (need I say more). Venture even further toward Bri Bri and you will find the waterfalls.
You can go on and on with the things you can do: zip line, canopy tours, the volcano; there's plenty to do if that's what you want............then there's our beach, swimming in its warm coves or taking a hike down the sand and over the palms to Punta Uva or jump on a horse and ride. Then come home and grab the best pizza ever from Jungle Love and have dinner in your own pool while you watch the Howlers settle in for the night. One day busy one day slow, of course you can always do it the Costa Rican way and just say manyana ........
When you're there give a little rub to my Florida baby Mr. Boots or he likes to be called Bootsie, his girlfriend Tiger that followed him home out of the jungle four years ago and recently an unwelcome visitor that won't leave Mr. Tommy Cat that has now become part of our Casa Madera family.......
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: I looked for many years for a place in the Caribbean where I could get away and forget about my business. A second home that was private where no one knew me or cared. I could dress like a bum, sleep all day and swim however I wanted. It was my paradise a dream come true, but times have changed and life with it. I still enjoy my time there and it is always difficult when it is time to go. I have learned a lot from the people and lifestyle of Costa Rica, mostly to live with less and to enjoy life more....
Why the Owner Chose Limón Province, Costa Rica:
Casa Madera embraced me and I embraced it the minute I set foot on it. I knew while I was walking down the overgrown covered path to the house it was the place for me, there was something spiritual about it to me and I have always felt protected there. When I get to Casa Madera it still takes my breath away and when I wake up in the morning and sit out on the deck I realize this is what I needed even more then the R & R....
The Unique Benefits at this House:
You will sleep with the sloths and wake up with the monkeys and wish you could stay forever. The jungle is not always quite but it is peaceful and a wonderful place to rest and recover ......
