Property needs TLC

  • 2 of 5

This rental is indeed just steps away from the ocean which is a great convenience. And the owner was very prompt in responding to my requests for assistance -even early, early on a Sunday morning. Thank you, Tom. Unfortunately, this rental desperately needs some TLC. There are torn screens in several places. A blind is completely missing from one of the windows in the "great" room. Blinds are damaged elsewhere. Lights have burnt out on a number of ceiling fixtures. Air conditioning doesn't sufficiently air condition the bedrooms when doors are closed (for privacy, of course). Knobs are missing on chest of drawers. Beds were most comfortable though. Forget about a trip to Redbox for a movie. There is no DVD player in this unit. The TV package with the unit is a good one and I was able to rent a movie after opening a free account on Vudu. Unfortunately, the TV continually freezes so that often the picture doesn't match the sound. We enjoyed the front porch. However, there are no side tables to set drinks on. We brought a stool in from the kitchen counter to serve as a side table. One of the porch chairs also broke while we were there. Being in the 60 and older crowd, it wasn't from rough-housing. We also loved the back deck and enjoyed breakfasts and dinners there as well as a spectacular sunset. The gas grill is a nice bonus, too. The weather was fabulous. The beach is...well, the beach! Great eating and shopping are available in abundance on Oak Island as well as in nearby Southport and Wilmington. But the unit appears to have been upfitted as cheaply as possible...and it shows.

Access to Ocean is fabulous

  • 4 of 5

Just step across the street and you're on the beach. You can see and hear the beach from the front porch. The two queen bedrooms has wonderfully comfortable beds and the 2nd bedroom has a stacked washer/dryer in it. There are no closets but hooks are provided on the doors to hang a couple things. The kitchen is large and very well furnished with anything you would need for cooking. Wifi was at at times slow so watching Netflix was a little frustrating but nothing I would not have expected really. I don't think it has really been totally renovated because some blinds are very damaged and the porch was equipped with only 3 chairs moved there from the outdoor table on the back deck. The AC worked great, the fans worked great and the owner is attentive and responded quickly to the couple questions I had. If you're looking for a home that serves all your needs, is clean and so close to the beach, this is it. If you're looking for adorable and modern, you will be disappointed. Overall, it was a great 10 days and truly is just steps from the ocean so no need to carry that huge bunch of stuff everyone else has to lug over to the beach!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. It's fair and comprehensive. We have added 4 new porch rocking chairs, and are in the process of replacing the blinds that were showing some age. Thank you again for your review!

Quaint and Charming!

  • 5 of 5

Sept/Oct. What a delightful vacation at Turtle Trail l

We loved this darling little rustic craftsman style cottage that sports lots of character. We enjoyed wonderful ocean view from the front room and on occasional lazy mornings from queen bedroom. There's a comfy 2nd bedroom with washer dryer unit tucked in the closet. There is a natural wood upper loft with twin beds. Perfect for our grandsons. This cute little get away really has it all with a/c , ceiling fans in every room, a fully equipt kitchen, a screened front porch, an outside deck with furnishings and a large gas grill.

We were especially drawn to this charming cottage because the owner truly is pet friendly. With our three girls being family we were seeking a place where our dogs would be welcome. We were thrilled to learn that Oak Island is also dog friendly and allows pupsters on the beachfront on leash. These special treats are hard to find and mean so much to those of us who love our pets.

What a perfect location We just stepped across the road to the sandy beach access for lots of fun filled days in the sun. We loved the quiet feel of the island life here on Oak Island with lots of friendly folks and plenty quaint neighbouring villages. Lots to do and unique little shops along the way. Of course if you feel like eating out there is a plethora of wonderful restaurants to enjoy. We especially enjoyed Island Way, Turtle Island and Little Bits for the best hamburgers. We also bought the absolute best seafood from Haag & Sons Seafood Market.

The owner Tom has been a blessing. He met all of our needs promptly and without hesitation. He was genuinely concerned about our comfort and made our stay extra special.

We hate to leave. Even our girls look sad. We will certainly miss the wonderful ocean view while sipping our early morning coffee on the front porch with the girls lying at our feet. We hope to be back again soon.

Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

Can't beat the location, right across the street from the beach. Great section of the island too, walking distance to the pier but still not crowded at all. The owner was very responsive before, during, and after our rental.
