About the property

New Peaceful, Private 2 Bedroom Plus Loft, Sleeps 8, Beach, Firepit, Dock

An amazing retreat for a summer adventure, winter wonderland, or colorful Autumn vacation you will never forget. This cozy restored cabin has a covered deck looking over the beach and water. Peaceful waters for your boat. Two plus bedrooms have all new queen beds, and the fun upstairs has a new queen and 2 extra long new twin beds. All new appliances: washer dryer, trash compactor, dishwasher, and all a kitchen needs. Living area both up and down stairs, flat screen with DVD, private beach, fire pit, canoe, and dock, spectacular views, often see wildlife including moose. Enjoy this amazing, peaceful location all four seasons. Gorgeous scene of top rated wedding in 2012. Priest Lake is one of the most beautiful, clean, peaceful lakes in the world. Hiking, bicycling, fishing, boating, and snowmobiling offer some of the best activities you'll ever find. Thousands of miles of trails, wonderful wildlife, and this magical place will create a most memorable vacation.

We rent from Friday evening to next Friday morning so you have a full weekend at the cabin.

Because of the septic and water systems, as well as the restored cabin, we are very strict about the 8 guest rule. Please look at the bed configuration (2 bedrooms with queen beds and upstairs loft area with 1 queen bed and 2 extra long twin beds) for sleeping arrangements as we do not allow sleeping on the couches, moving furniture or additional beds (other than small portable cribs for babies).

Cell phone coverage depends on your service and the weather. The cabin has a phone, however you must bring a phone card as there is no long distance coverage.

All cooking and eating dishes, pots, pans etc. are provided; however, we ask you bring paper plates and cups if you plan to eat outdoors or around the fire pit, and fire proof cooking utensils if you plan to cook around the fire.

The dock is long enough for 21 foot boat and deep enough for inboard boats.

Water is gradual depths with sandy wading to deep water swimming. Public sand bar across the Thorofare allows for additional shallow swimming.

Thorofare is calm water great for canoe, kayak, paddle boards, and row boats as well as all watercraft.

Fishing is allowed in the Thorofare and has several varieties of fish. Renters often catch fish off the dock or from the canoe.

We have a marked walkiing trail from the cabin to the Upper Lake and several hiking or biking trails close by; including the famous water slides on Lion Creek.

If you have more than 8 in your family, you are welcome to also rent the cabin "Red Moose" just down the beach and use both cabins.

About Jeannie Cocks

My father fished and boated on this lake since the 20's and as a child we traveled from Spokane to camp and play on a nearby beach. This site was originally Forest Lodge and many famous people stayed there including movie star Nell Shipman and her over 100 animals for filming. We jumped at the chance to purchase and restor this incredible site; and as a family have worked for 7 years to restore the forest and cabins in this historic, beautiful place.

Jeannie Cocks purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Jeannie Cocks chose Coolin

We wanted to save this amazing, beautiful site from developers and restore the historic cabins and keep the natural forest. We own 15 acres behind the cabin as a natural habitat and are bordered on the west side by National forest so it is not only gorgeous but also peaceful.

What makes this cabin unique

We have restored the cabin to be very comfortable with its great views of water, mountains, forest, and amazing night sky. Our sons and daughters have built cedar lined fire pit area and rock lined paths; and we are always cleaning the forest. We provide a canoe, and traveling up the Thorofare is an experience of a lifetime - you might even see a moose at the water's edge; then relax for evening smores by the fire. Thorofare water is calm for swimming, and boating and just across the sandbar out the Thorofare entrance is the main lake for all water activities. Beautiful walking trails right from the property and many hiking opportunities close by. Famous rock water slides hike nearby.

Always peaceful waters in front; with the lake just around the sand bar. Easy boating on the winding beautiful Thorofare between the lakes and boating on both lakes; fishing, and swimming. Acres of hiking area on the property, in the forest or on trails to the Upper Lake. Snowmobile trails all around right from the cabin. Quiet evenings on the deck often view wildlife including eagles, moose, deer, rabbits, and beaver. We limit the parking area to no more than three vehicles, (no motor homes or campers) and one boat or RV trailer. We will provide firewood for campfire for a fee . If there is a camp fire ban or it pours rain all week we will refund the money.

Priest lake incredible

  • 4 of 5

Preist lake is so beautiful. Not bad staying on thoroughfare but not as nice view as lakefront and some boating traffic. Also loud RV crowding neighbors really detracted from the solitude. Did get to upper lake and see bears! Cabin is lovely- hot upstairs, really needs a fan and best for 6 or less people. The owners extremely picky about check in and check out proceedings. Why pay a cleaning fee if have to leave it spotless, dishes done and laundry done? I would return to Priest lake but find another rental house.

Owner's Response: We are happy that 99% of our renters are wonderful, caring, and respectful people. We appreciate people taking care of our home but we DO NOT ask for all laundry to be done. It is nice, however, when renters sweep food off floors and clean spills from microwave, oven, furniture and floors; and offer to pay for broken items. We do ask that food not be eaten on the couch, and hope people will respect our property. The neighbors two lots down are there with motor homes only one week out of the year but they are 100 feet away, and usually keep to themselves. We hope renters will read about the amenities and realize that although the beds sleep eight, two of them are queen beds and it might be difficult for eight unrelated people to sleep comfortably.

Was exactly what my family needed. Everything was perfect....from seeing my kiddos catch fish from the doc in the early mornings to hitting the canoe and fishing in it in the evening.(YES they caught fish) The cabin was super clean. Loved being away from it all. With the weather in the 100's the cabin stayed surprisingly cool! I parked my 21' boat at the doc and had no issues with the thoroughfare. Loved the closeness of gathering huckleberries and the slate water slides. Recommend hitting the lake in AM hrs.. Was perfect glass. Loved being the first boat on the water. I recommend this cabin to everyone.

Accommodating Owners and Beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Red Bear. Jeannie was very accommodating as well as friendly. The cabin is clean, inviting, and beautifully situated on the thoroughfare between Upper and Lower Priest lake. We enjoyed paddling the thoroughfare, sitting around the beautiful fire pit, and relaxing in the forest. There were no insects, few other boaters, and incredible views all around. Hiking in the area is also top-notch. Previous VRBO rentals have disappointed as the kitchens were poorly equipped. Jeannie has thought of everything at Red Bear. We were delighted to discover everything we needed was provided. We felt right at home...but better. :)

A glorious place to re-unite and renew!

  • 5 of 5

Having restored an historical old home in the midwest, I think my family's appreciation of this wonderful cabin and the surrounding acreage probably surpasses most people's. The location is, I think, perfect: on a peaceful river with fishing, swimming, hiking canoeing, wildlife just ourside the door. My two granddaughters ( ages 8 and 9), my two sons, and I could not have wanted for more!! The girls felt as though the upstairs loft was their own personal hideaway, and the guys and I loved the modern kitchen and grille, our private space downstairs, and hours of sitting on the front porch or fishing off the dock. We ALL loved time around the comfortable, well-stocked fire pit---hours every night after a full day of beautiful hiking or canoeing experiences. As "Nana", I appreciated the laundry! The scenery is breathtaking, and a WONDERFUL trail within the National Forest is just a short canoe trip away. We all agree that we'd recomend this cabin ( now affectionately referred to by us as "our cabin") to anyone who loves nature, appreciates beauty and maintaining it, and wants to "unplug" from the fast-paced, day-to-day stresses of life.

Owner's Response: Yes, it is a one of a kind, amazing site, on one of the most pristine lakes in the world. The property has all the advantages of being on the water of the Thorofare between the lakes, but also just across the sand bar is the main lake; so the site offers gorgeous views in all directions and every water sport you like while at the same time it is a peaceful site located next to the National Forest.

If you are looking for a wonderful family experience in one of the most beautiful settings in Northern Idaho, look no further. We spent a wonderful weekend together with my wife, son, daughter and my 6 month old granddaughter at this retreat. Having spent many summer weekends in the area camping at Lion's Head State Park when our children were young, we felt that it would be great to bring our grand daughter along for her first outdoor experience with in the comfort of a cabin. Well, I scored big points with my wife, kids and even the little one when we pulled up to the "Red Bear Cabin." Quoting my 27 year old daughter, "This is five star camping." The grounds and structure felt very much like home. This was of no surprise after seeing what the owner's labor of love resulted with. The attention to detail and the comfort that was a product of this remodel was felt throughout the stay. The longer we were there, the more we felt at home. I loved the feel of the thoroughfare passing along the dock which connects the upper and lower Priest Lakes. I loved my morning runs through the state park and along the sandy beach as the sun warms the sand. I loved being with my family in an outdoor environment with the comforts of home at our fingertips. I appreciate the trust was was given to me by the owner and I would highly recommend this cabin for anyone with similar goals.

Already planning the next stay

The cabin is absolutely what we hoped it would be, and more. The location is perfect and provides a quiet atmosphere combined with ample amount of amenities to keep you comfortable. Sadly, we left our boat at home this trip but will definitely bring it the next time we stay here since the dock provides convenient access to both Priest Lake and Upper Priest Lake via the "Thorofare". Although, if you don't have a boat, there is a canoe available for use. We were impressed with the touches the owners added to make it feel like you're at home as well as how clean it was. You can really tell that the owners work hard and have pride in the cabin. We look forward to our next stay!

Owner's Response: Traveling down the beautiful Thorofare is definitely a highlight of Priest Lake whether you paddle or motor. The winding, slow moving, water provides incredible views, including the possibility of viewing moose, eagles, herons, beaver, muskrat, and other wildlife. A great place for a boating picnic before opening into the Upper Lake for hiking, skiing, berry picking or just relaxing on one of the many beaches.

Newly restored. Located right on the peaceful water of the Thorofare yet just across the sand bar to the main lake, surrounded by National Forest and private 18 acres. And, although listed as Mosquito Bay, we are actually not in that bay and there are NO MORE MOSQUITOS THAN ANY OTHER AREA ON THE LAKE. We have a Private beach and dock. Spectacular site for canoeing or boating up the world renowned gorgeous Thorofare or on the lake. Starting point for amazing hiking, canoeing, boating, swimming, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing, bird watching, wildlife viewing, peaceful camp fires, relaxing in the all day sun, or spectacular star gazing.
