14. HOLDEN BEACH, NORTH CAROLINA

No building in Holden Beach can stand over 35 feet tall, and that city ordinance goes a long way in describing the small-town atmosphere here. The family-friendly spot, which sometimes sees visits from loggerhead turtles, boasts nearly a dozen miles of pristine coastline.

Saturday to Saturday rental. No partial weeks or Sunday to Sunday rentals.

If you prefer to book online, email me and I will provide you the link.

You will love your stay in this airy and bright beach cottage. Skylights and large windows bring the sunshine in. The interior is cheerful, comfortable and filled with light.

The house is on two levels, the first containing the living area, dining room, kitchen, powder room, two bedrooms, one full bath and a laundry area.

One bedroom is on the back of the house with French doors overlooking the private deck, marsh and Intracoastal waterway. This bedroom is furnished with a queen bed.

The second bedroom on this level is on the front of the house and is perfect for the kids! A pyramid bunk bed set will sleep 4 kiddos comfortably. Each bedroom has its own flat screen TV.

The living/dining area is cozy and comfortable with beautiful hardwood floors and plenty of room for gathering and eating.

The kitchen is bright, open and spacious with everything you need for your vacation cooking needs.

The second level consists of a loft area perfect for reading or playing games. It has its own deck. The master bedroom is also on the second level. It is a large and comfortable retreat with a queen bed, cable TV and its own bathroom. You will also enjoy the large French doors opening to a private deck overlooking the marsh and Intracoastal waterway.

The decks and porch are furnished with chairs and rockers for your relaxation. The front decks offer an ocean view and always have a lovely breeze. They are also perfect for people watching! The back decks and screened porch are a peaceful and relaxing place to watch the birds and wildlife in the marsh and the boats on the Intracoastal.

Nearby beach access. Saturday to Saturday rental.

Hi speed WiFi is included in your rental as is the check out cleaning. Bed linens are also provided.

Holden Beach is the perfect location for all you want to do on a vacation. Holden Beach itself is quiet and unspoiled and definitely a family beach. The beach is uncrowded, perfect for kite flying, sand castle building (there's a weekly contest!), bocce ball, volleyball or just laying in the sun. Look for turtle nests! When you see trenches being dug, it's almost hatching time. Go to the beach at night to see the 'boil' (turtles hatching). Anyone you see with a Turtle Patrol teeshirt will be happy to give you all the info on the turtle nests. Free concert on Sunday nights at the Holden Beach Pavilion. A small waterslide, several putt-putt courses, bumper boats and other amusements are available on the causeway. You will also find some small shops, a couple of ice cream parlors and fresh North Carolina seafood restaurants.

Within a few minutes drive, you can be a one of many excellent golf courses. If you crave a little excitement after a relaxing day on the beach, Myrtle Beach is only 40 miles away with its nightlife, fabulous outlet shopping and many amusements for the kids.

The southern charm of historic Wilmington, NC is also 40 miles away. You can stroll the quaint streets of downtown Wilmington filled with unique shops and restaurants, or you can visit the USS North Carolina Battleship. You can take a carriage ride or a riverboat tour. Many movies and TV shows are filmed in Wilmington, so you may well recognize some of the locations! 'Revolution' is one of the current ones being filmed there. 'Iron Man 3' wrapped up filming in Wilmington recently. The Nicholas Sparks movie 'Safe Haven' was filmed in Wilmington and Southport. Star sightings are a common occurrence in Wilmington!

New film 'Tammy' with Melissa McCarthy filmed in nearby Shallotte.

The historic North Carolina town of Southport is only a 45 minute drive. Beautiful historic homes and charming shops on the Cape Fear River make for a lovely day of sightseeing. Southport has some wonderful restaurants, too. You can also take a ferry from Southport across the Cape Fear to Fort Fisher, an important Civil War location. Keep your eye out for alligators sunning themselves along the riverbank. Just a few minutes drive from Fort Fisher is the North Carolina Aquarium. If you care to explore, a few miles up the road you can see Kure Beach and Carolina Beach. Or, for a little different experience you can take a ferry from Southport to Bald Head Island. This island can only be reached by ferry or boat and there are no cars allowed on the island. You can walk around the small downtown area or rent a golf cart or bicycle and ride around the whole island and look at the magnificent homes with their amazing ocean views.

A few of our favorite restaurants:

Captain Pete's, Holden Beach - Elegant fresh seafood dishes, mixed drinks and a nice wine selection. Especially lovely at sunset!

Provisions, Holden Beach - seafood and burgers with a stunning view of the boats going up and down the Intracoastal.

Brentwood Restaurant, Little River, SC - perfect for a special occasion. Great French food and a very reasonable Prix Fixe menu including wine!

Sugar Shack, Ocean Isle Beach - Great Jamaican food in a fun and lively atmosphere. Make reservations! The wait can get very long in the summer.

Live Oak Café, Southport - sophisticated Southern cuisine.

Calabash Creamery, Calabash, NC - delectable homemade ice cream with a huge selection of flavors. You can go here after visiting one of the many fantastic seafood restaurants that Calabash is famous for. Make time for a stroll though Callahans of Calabash. It's a gift store, but so much more. You have to see it to believe it!

About owner/property manager

We live in the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia and relish the time we get to spend at Holden Beach. As we cross that beautiful bridge and get a glimpse of the sparkling Atlantic, our cares slip away. We are at the beach all summer and available should there be any unresolved problems and would love to hear from you even if there are no problems!

Why owner/property manager chose Southern Coast

We looked at dozens of houses before we found 'Moondance' and it was love at first sight. The beautiful views and the open layout captivated us.

What makes this cottage unique

We fell in love with the gorgeous house from the moment we walked in and we knew it had to be ours. It is so bright and open it takes your breath away when you first walk in a get a glimpse of the marsh and the waterway. We hope you will love it, too.

Our Beach Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a very relaxing, enjoyable stay at Moondance. It is such a bright, cheery summer cottage! We enjoyed our coffee each morning in the screened in back porch overlooking the marsh and waterway. So very peaceful. We have rented many places through VRBO and I have to say Debbie was a pleasure to work with. Always responded to my emails or texts right away and was very helpful and accommodating. Thanks, Debbie, for sharing your beautiful home with us😊

Nice Accomodations - Great Views

  • 5 of 5

Our stay here was great. The views out the back from the decks and the screened in porch overlook the marsh and the inter-coastal waterway. It was interesting watching the changing of the marsh with high and low tides. Deer and other animals passed through most every day. The walk to the beach is pretty short and the beach was never crowded. The kids downstairs bedroom was perfect for our four granddaughters. Would definitely stay here again.

Peaceful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had the opportunity to rent this lovely home split between one couple and one family, and it was the perfect arrangement. The upstairs master was quiet and very private, while the downstairs bedrooms (with a second bedroom that serves as a master) was ideal for the family with children to spread out. The views are so tranquil and private. The walk to the beach access was only 5 or so houses down the road and very approachable. We were delighted to watch some turtles hatch with some assistance by the local volunteer Turtle patrol. My only critique is that this is the first VRBO home I have stayed in that had no paper products to start with, not even a leftover roll of toilet paper, but that could be because it is managed by a local vacation rental agency. Be forewarned and bring your own towels and all paper products. Other then that, we had a very relaxing and fun time staying at this lovely home, and I would return in the future!

Owner's Response: Hello Pam! Thank you so much for your kind review! We are so happy that you liked our home and had a wonderful vacation. We are delighted that you were able to see the turtles hatching. It's such a memorable experience. We are sorry that you were inconvenienced by the lack of certain products. We have rented many VRBO properties ourselves and you are right, they have always had paper products, towels, spices, etc. to start off. This rental is a little different, as you say, because we do have a local rental company managing the property. Our VRBO listing is intended to supplement rentals for the weeks the rental company is not able to fill. It would be impossible for us to keep those items supplied for both types of rentals. Although we have not heard this concern before, I am taking your review as a suggestion and I will make sure that I change the description so that it is clear that those things are not included so no one is surprised or unprepared. Thanks so much! Debbie
