Overview

About the property

Casa de Perlas is a desirable 3 bedroom villa located close to the Jardin

Maximum occupancy: 6 people -- No children under 16. Infants fine.

**Please note: We enjoy our home from early November to April each year, with a break from mid December to New Years Eve. The house might be available for a week or so during the those months, while we travel on short notice.

As you enter Casa de Perlas, your first impression will be of light, graciousness and elegance. The first living area is an outdoor salon, complete with oversized comfortable furniture with seating for 6, a large wood burning fireplace and stone floors covered by antique Persian rugs. There is a separate music system dedicated to this outdoor living area with combined CD player and iPod player. An elegant powder room services this part of the home and pool area.

The house continues through a covered outdoor corridor, lined with stone columns, carved arches and elegant Palladian style mirrors. The mirrors reflect plantings around the solar (and gas) heated plunge pool in the private central courtyard: it is a wonderful oasis after a day of taking in the art galleries and local markets. The pool and gardens are automatically lit at night to add to the enchantment of this area of the home. Imagine yourself relaxing in the Sala, listening to your favorite playlist, with a glass of wine after refreshing swim.

At the end of the corridor, you will enter the large, bright Great Room: filled with original art from the owner’s travels in Asia, stunning antique rugs, very high ceilings and the highest quality furniture, it is sure to be one of your favorite areas of the home. A large stone gas fireplace anchors one wall, which divides the living area from the dining room and kitchen. The living room is intimate with comfortable sofas to curl up in. All of the lights and chandeliers are on dimmers so you can create a warm and intimate atmosphere for dining, conversation, or just relaxing.

The built in surround sound system has a high end Harmon Kardon receiver which drives the satellite TV CD player, iPod accessory, Blue Ray player and the 50” plasma screen. In one of two grand custom-built armoires, there is a selection of current movies for your enjoyment while you are in the home. In the other armoire, there is a complete selection of fine glassware, elegant table linens and cocktail accessories.

The owners appreciate fine food and entertain frequently, and it shows in this spacious, fully equipped cook’s kitchen. All appliances are stainless steel: a 5-burner gas range, dishwasher, dual fridge/ice maker/freezer, and microwave. In addition, you are welcome to make use of the stocked pantry, and convenient small electrical appliances (Cusinart, immersion blender etc) All Clad pots and pans and a selection of French and German knives and a stocked walk in pantry. All of the water in the house is drinkable and triple filtered with a UV and reverse osmosis process for safety and comfort.

Before you leave the kitchen, which enjoys glorious light all day from overhead skylights, you will notice the monitor screen for the security system. It is a fully monitored system, with screens and intercoms in the kitchen and master bedroom linked to the outside front door, so you need never open the house to strangers.

The second floor is the main sleeping area of the home. The bedrooms are separated by the courtyard, which ensures complete privacy for all. The luxurious and elegant master bedroom is the first door on your right, and has 2 large (screened) windows overlooking the courtyard and pool. It features a firm hotel quality king bed, a gas fireplace, an air con/heating unit, and a ceiling fan. There are 2 large closets for your use.

A wonderful Oriental rug and lined black out custom draperies provide warmth and quiet elegance. All of our bedrooms have high thread count Italian bed linens and the bathrooms are supplied with luxurious Turkish cotton towels and pure cotton bathrobes. In the elegant, sky lit Master bathroom, there is a double vanity, a generous walk in marble lined shower with bench, and a separate water closet with linen storage.

At the end of the corridor is the bright and smartly decorated second bedroom. It usually serves as the owner’s guest bedroom, and offers a hotel quality, four-poster firm queen bed with 2 large closets, and a large window with a built in upholstered bench for reading in the afternoon. The elegant adjoining bathroom is large and light filled: it offers a deep modern style tub (a rarity in San Miguel) with shower, double vanity and stunning custom oversized mirrors. Hair dryers and makeup mirrors are provided in both bathrooms.

The last room on this floor is the library/third bedroom: warm and inviting, it is a perfect place to relax with a book or compose emails to home. The library has all of the modern conveniences you would expect in a home of this caliber: wireless modem, which serves the whole house, laser printer and the Vonage phone for free long distance calls within North America.

Snuggle into the soft leather sofa and put your feet up on the ottoman as you relax in front of the gas fireplace. The Library also has the 2nd television in the house: 32” flat screen TV with surround sound speaker system, satellite TV and Blue Ray Player. The third bed is queen sized, and is contained in a custom armoire which the housekeeper will make up for you on request. This library/bed room shares access to the spacious bathroom and overlooks the pool and central courtyard.

A well-lit staircase leads to the most magical place in this very magical home: the beautiful roof top terrace. Acting as another complete living room and entertaining space, it enjoys wonderful views of the city day and night. Graced with flowering bougainvillea vines, pots of fragrant rosemary, and a prolific lemon tree, it is a heavenly place to read or just to relax.

Indeed, you will find yourself spending hours curled upon the comfortable sofa or day bed on the roof, watching the hummingbirds dart among the flowers, and perhaps planning your evening out at one of many good restaurants in San Miguel. (We are passionate and picky about our dining: you will find our curated suggestions in our House Guide. And good does not necessarily mean very expensive here.)

If you decide to cook alfresco, there is an out door kitchen with an impressive built-in charcoal BBQ grill, bar fridge and copper bar sink. The outdoor dining table can seat 6 or 8. A custom antique armoire has been adapted for entertaining: it houses the stereo system that services the rooftop, wine glasses and has a marble top for beverage service.

There is also a powder room on this level for your convenience. Behind the powder room, there is another small terrace where the owner grows culinary herbs such as mint, rosemary and thyme that you are welcome to enjoy.

Other Information:

Our industrious and accommodating housekeeper keeps the home sparkling 5 days a week, and is also an expert laundress. She also manages the garden and the pool so you will have nothing to do except relax and enjoy.

The bilingual house manager is on call to handle any issue or emergency, personal or house related. He also owns a licensed tour company, and will arrange transportation from the airports in Mexico City as well as private tours of the surrounding areas.

This home has all of the conveniences that you should expect of a house of this quality: modern plumbing and electricity, whole house water purification systems (including a water filter system in the fridge and a special dedicated triple filtered faucet at the sink) and security system.

It is truly a wonderful place to act as a base for exploring SMA, but some of our guests have said that they find Casa de Perlas so beautiful and so complete, that they never want to leave it!

About Cheryl Young

Ben and I met in San Miguel de Allende in January of 2010: it was his 6th year wintering here and I was on my way through to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.

We fell in love and our love affair with each other and San Miguel continues. Like many other visitors to San Miguel, we came intending to rent another home, and ending up buying our dream.

Cheryl Young purchased this house in 2011

Why Cheryl Young chose Zona Centro

An American couple built Arboles 2B about 8 years ago: he is an experienced contractor and she is an artist, working here and in Taos New Mexico. This house was their fifth project here, and we naturally think that it must be the best. Every day, we see another detail, another feature, another flowering plant blooming, which makes us appreciate all of the effort and attention that they put into the project. We spent a few months in San Miguel completing the furnishings and adding artwork. Much of the artwork on the walls in the living room is from my travels in Laos, Vietnam and China. We hope to continue to add art from Mexico, Asia and our travels in Europe.

We sincerely hope that you fall in love with San Miguel just as we did, and want to come back again and again. There is vibrancy and an energy here that we have not found anywhere else in world, and we love to help others discover it too.

What makes this house unique

LOCATION! LOCATION! and need we say it again, LOCATION ! Casa de Perlas is truly a perfect choice for a restful holiday that also offers easy access to the city on your own terms. Located on a quiet, tree lined side street filled with other single family homes, it is only a short walk to interesting boutiques, fruit & vegetable markets, spas, yoga studios, and restaurants, both casual and formal.

RELAX IN LUXURY

Rumor has it that San Miguel has more festivals than any other town in Mexico! So after you have enjoyed the excitement, colour and music in the central square ( “The Jardin”), you can retreat to your oasis in the city, Casa de Perlas. Take a dip in your own private plunge pool, relax by the fire, and then ascend to the rooftop for sunset views. The air is filled with the fragrance from the lemon tree and the pots of flowering rosemary. Completely set up for comfort, it is a wonderfully luxurious spot to read, relax and watch the hummingbirds flit amid the vibrant bougainvillaea. It is the crowning glory of a truly glorious home.

Guestbook comments from the manager

“We had so many lovely moments in your home. Had to drag ourselves away to explore San Miguel. Thank you for providing so many comfortable, beautiful spots to relax and take it all in. We had Chef Julian Garcia (contact information for Chef Julian is in the House Book) prepare us a 7 course dinner in the home. Highly recommend this to anyone staying here. The meal was delicious and we loved sitting in your elegant dining room enjoying the meal. After dinner, we retired to take a dip in the warm pool and a fire on your rooftop terrace. Ahhh, relaxation. Cannot wait to return.”

Everything we Expected and Much More!

  • 5 of 5

When we were looking online for a vacation property, one of our concerns was that the house would not meet our expectations when we saw it live. We were so happily reassured when we walked through the doors of Casa de Perlas! Everything was exactly as shown in the photos and more. The house is comfortable, luxurious and fully equipped in every respect. And Berenece the housekeeper, was simply the best: hardworking, accommodating and always pleasant. It is truly the whole package and we will recommend it to friends & family.

Still fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

I have been fortunate enough to enjoy a few weeks every year in this stunning home. The level of comfort and attention to every detail is exceptional and Berence, the always helpful housekeeper, is a delight. Over the years, the owners have added original artwork which makes Casa de Perlas even more special. It is apparent that they care deeply about their guests' experience. One of my highlights was the in-home massage: it is one of the best I have ever had. (Contact information is in the House Book along with other great recommendations for dining, tours etc. ) I forward to my eighth visit!

A museum of amazing hospitality and detail

  • 5 of 5

Wow! I am still stunned by the beauty and ambiance of Casa de Perlas. It was the most stunning home of over 100 homes we have stayed in over the years around the world. The value for what you get , I cannot describe. I felt like royalty staying in a museum. The open air concept, the decorative details represented from all over the world, Berenice the housekeeper (or rather, the personal attendant), the top floor terrace (where we spend many dinners and enjoying fireworks), the easy walk to the Jardin, and many more wonderful memories are all highlights of our trip to San Miguel for New Years. This has to be one of the best places in the world to spend New Years. My daughter asked everyday, "Can we go to the festival today?" Everyday was a fiesta on the town square. Thank you, Laura for answering every question and every call we made. I want to move to Casa de Perlas.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your glowing review! We think of Casa de Perlas as our castle, and yet it is still an elegant, warm and comfortable home for travellers such as yourself. Our housekeeper is indeed a treasure, and I am so glad that you were able to take advantage of everything San Miguel has to offer at that time of year. Fireworks, fiestas, and views from the roof top terrace! What could be better? And we look forward to seeing you again.

The Ultimate Girl's Getaway!!!!

  • 5 of 5

I arrived in San Miguel with a group of co-workers and by the end of the week we left as best friends! San Miguel and your stunningly beautiful home played a crucial role in the transformation. The girls all agreed Casa de Perlas was everything I had promised and more. Over the course of the week we all found an excursion that scored high on the excitement meter, horse backing riding in the canyon, zip lining over the canyon, a personalized historical tour, art tour, a day at the SPA and unique SHOPPING OPPORTUNITIES, something for everyone. We booked our final dinner at The Restaurant on Cheryl's recommendation and we were blown away, the food was fabulous only to be topped by the service. I would be remiss if I did not thank the ever efficient, pleasant and helpful Berenece whose attention to even the smallest detail makes Casa de Perlas a 5 STAR home away from home! I am so looking forward to my next glass of bubbly sitting upstairs enjoying a crackling fire and the spectacular view of the city. Thank you for opening your home.

Owner's Response: Thank you Linda. We do love our home too! It offers all the best of San Miguel, with the close proximity to the lively centre of town, as well as the opportunity to retreat from the action and relax in front of the fire on the roof top or in the pool. We call our beautiful pool area “The Grotto”, since it is so private and surrounded by lush greenery. And we agree, our housekeeper is absolutely wonderful. We look forward to having you stay with us again. B&C

The perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

What a gorgeous house! From the rooftop views to the grotto like pool, and everything in-between, it was a perfect romantic vacation spot for my husband and I. Full of flowers and hummingbirds darting here the there, the roof top terrace was so peaceful and tranquil that we never wanted to leave. And there was an outdoor kitchen, complete with bar fridge and BBQ, so it meant that we never had to! (Unless we wanted to, and being “foodies”, of course we did: I just read an article that said the town has become the gourmet capital of Mexico, outside of Mexico City). And the housekeeper was absolutely a delight: so warm and welcoming. I cannot recommend Casa de Perlas highly enough!

Set high in the hills north of Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende dates back to the 16th century, and has well-preserved baroque architecture, winding cobblestone streets and is wonderfully romantic. It will remind you of the ancient quaint little towns of Italy and France. In 2017, San Miguel took the prize for the “Best City in the World to Travel To”, as awarded by Travel & Leisure Magazine. And we have the very best of the city to offer you.

LOCATION, LOCATION and need I say it again LOCATION!

Our gorgeous home is centrally located: within minutes, you can be at the best restaurants, eclectic boutiques, warming & welcoming bars, and the local flower & vegetable market, San Juan de Dios, is almost just around the corner.

The most photographed image in all Mexico is just 6 minutes away; the famous “Paroquia”, our glorious pink church stands proudly in front of the “living room” of San Miguel, the “Jardin”. When I give a Historic Tour (on a volunteer basis for a children’s charity here), I say with confidence that if you sit long enough in the Jardin, you will see everyone you know in San Miguel stroll by. You must not miss the Paroquia lit up at night, and take the opportunity to hire one of the roaming mariachi bands. As them to play their favourite song, as you sit, gazing up at the church, and feeling grateful that you found San Miguel and Casa de Perlas.

QUIET LUXURY

You will find Casa de Perlas on a quiet, tree lined side street filled with other single family homes.

Rumor has it that San Miguel has more festivals than any other town in Mexico! So after you have enjoyed the excitement, colour and music in the “Jardin”, your oasis in the city, Casa de Perlas.
