Cocolobo is an exceptionally private and romantic, 3-bedroom villa that sits high on top of the hill that towers over Reef Bay National Park. The house enjoys 320 degree views of pristine coastline, virgin rain forest and tropical mountains. A short drive and then a hike will take you down the hillside to the white sand beach at Reef Bay, which is St. John's most virgin National Park beach where snorkeling, swimming and beach walks are private and inviting. A one mile hike along the shore - easiest at low tide - brings you to a second beach at the head of Reef Bay while other trails take you on more challenging hikes through the National Park to Lameshur Bay, Bordeaux Mountain or Ram Head. It's a 4 mile drive into Cruz Bay, but the road from Cruz Bay dead ends at Reef Bay and very few tourists wander out to this still secluded location.
This 3-level home is built on the edge of a steep hill that plunges into the Caribbean Sea at Reef Bay. You park on the upper level and enter into the 1200 sq/ft. great room, which contains the living, dining and kitchen areas plus a full bath. The great room is surrounded on 3 sides by more than 60' of 8 foot tall windows which insure spectacular views wherever you stand or sit. There are three small observation decks facing north and east, while glass doors open to the sun deck and pool on the south side of the house. Exterior covered stairs lead to the master bedroom on the middle level, and stairs on both sides of the house lead to the two guest bedrooms on the lower level.
In each of the three bedrooms you'll sleep to the sound of surf breaking on the beach below you. The over sized (400 sq/ft) master bedroom has a king bed, lots of closet space, and marvelous views from everywhere in the bedroom and bath. The two guest bedrooms (queen and twin beds) are smaller (160 sq/ft.) and are on a level below the master bedroom. The guest bedrooms share a tiled bath that is located between them. All bedrooms have beautiful views and face east for a memorable morning sunrise, while ceiling fans and the trade winds insure excellent ventilation. The third bath with shower is located on the upper level, off the great room.
In the living area of the great room you’ll enjoy 18’ beamed cathedral ceilings, walls of glass, overstuffed furniture, and oriental rugs over a Terra cotta tiled floor. For entertainment you have a 42” flat screen TV/DVD/VCR, plus an AM/FM stereo with CD, an iPod player, and WiFi. There's also a full bath with shower in the great room.
There are three choices for dining. The mahogany table in the dining room seats 6-8 persons, an antique table in the kitchen seats six, and there is also a teak table seating four in the garden patio on the west side of the house
The fully tiled, 300 sq/ft. kitchen combines the look of a country kitchen, with the tiled floors, tiled counter tops and rich mahogany trim of the Caribbean. An electric cook-top stove with oven, side by side refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, bar sink plus double ceramic sinks, microwave, toaster, blender, coffeemaker, mini food processor and a complete selection of cookware and dinnerware are provided. An outdoor gas BBQ grill, washer/dryer, beach chairs, and all linens, and telephone are included.
When we drove out to Reef Bay for the first time it was hard to imagine what awaited us at the end of the scenic drive to Reef Bay. We had seen photos of Cocolobo but still, when we first walked into the great room and looked out at the view we just kept muttering, “oh my God,” over and over. The views looking east, south and west were absolutely beautiful that first day we came to Cocolobo, and they haven’t changed a bit since that day. We not only like looking into the National Park as it stretches for miles along the coast of St. John, we like being in the Park – walking along the beach, swimming and snorkeling when the surf is gentle, and hiking along national park maintained trails to Rams Head or Lameshur Bay. We think that America’s national parks are one of our countries great treasures, and the unspoiled coastal landscapes of the National Park on St. John surely rank this as one of Americas most beautiful and unique National Parks. Having the Park as our neighbor makes all the difference in the world, for we know our amazing view of this green and blue world will never change. When it comes to which St John home has the most amazing view of undisturbed coastline and virgin mountains and forests, we know that Cocolobo is the hands down sure winner.
There’s absolutely no question that this hill top location overlooking the south coast of St. John - from Rams head in the east all the way to St James and St. Thomas islands in the west – is one of a kind on this island. We’ve read a lot of VRBO reviews where owners claim to have a unique location and the word unique gets bandied about pretty freely. But in the case of Cocolobo, it definitely applies for this location is the only one of its kind on St. John, with the best views of the south coast National Park to be found anywhere in the Virgin Islands.
The relative seclusion of Cocolobo also gives it an awesome sense of privacy, tranquility and solitude. You’re the last villa on a dead end road that few people ever bother to explore, and the occasional tourists who do wander out this way say “we’re lost” and turn around long before they get to Cocolobo. You’re not alone out here, there are other villas in Reef Bay and you have neighbors, but they’re mostly screened from view by tropical vegetation, so the sense of being alone and at one with nature is quite strong. Glorious sunrises, sunshine all day on your pool and deck, colorful sunsets (especially in the winter months) and evenings with moonlight shimmering across an endless sea - these are some of the natural treasures that Cocolobo serves up. Every guest that has stayed at Cocolobo agrees that this is a hellava unique hideaway; there’s nothing quite like it.
For lovers and romantics, this house also has a soft and amorous side. The décor reflects the ideas of all three designers, so there’s a blend of interesting pieces - overstuffed furniture, handsome antiques, 14 candelabras, etc. The colors are bold, and the accessories engaging and it all comes together to create a comfortable and inviting interior décor. When combined with the bold elements of nature that surround you, it all produces a uniquely private and romantic environment, with a distinctive dash of adventure and excitement.
My wife and I have been traveling to St John for years and were completely blown away by the view Cocolobo has to offer. We specifically loved the privacy where we felt away from it all. The "home away from home" ambiance had us talking about our next trip to this very spot. Caribbean Villas was a pleasure to work with as well! Having this not be our first time working with owners and/or management companies, they definitely made a positive impact for this particular stay. I will absolutely recommend Caribbean Villas and Cocolobo to our friends!
The villa was simply amazing from the privacy, the decor and the mind blowing views! This was the third villa we rented and will be the last because it doesn't get any better than this villa! We will be starting a tradition to come back to Cocolobo every year! Hands down the best views anywhere on the island!
