Beautiful Property, Difficult Owners and Rules

  • 2 of 5

This property is beautifully situated on the lake. The grounds are well-kept. The house is well stocked, especially the kitchen. There is a BBQ but one burner did not light when we tried to use it. The row boat is not seaworthy; the keel is rotted out. There is ample room for many people to sleep between the large beds and the couches. Our biggest problem was with the rules and the owners. The rental agreement states ALL linens and towels have to be washed, dried, folded, and placed on the ends of the beds before the 1100 am check out. For us that was 4 sets of bedding and at least 5 towels, plus kitchen towels- a few loads of laundry. I requested, and was granted, a 1pm check out in order to have time to do all of the wash. There was also a steep penalty in the rental agreement of $25/15 minutes for late departure. Then when we arrived there was a binder with a departure check list that included sweeping all of the floors, and wiping down all of the counters, taking out the trash, and other things. I became very concerned that I would not receive my deposit back after seeing this extensive list. On our day of departure, we were all set to leave except for one load of laundry, the owner arrived at 1107 am, entered the house, and asked when we were leaving. I informed her that I had been given late check-out, she denied this, I showed her the email thread through the Home Away app and she still attempted to deny it, she even grabbed my phone from my hand to scroll through the thread! She then agreed we did have late check-out. I told her we only had one load of laundry in the machine, and asked if we could leave it. She granted that request. The non working items could have just been a small annoyance, but the unclear cleaning rules and the confrontation at the very end of the trip really make me wary of this property owner. Technically we should only have had to do the laundry, as written in the agreement that I signed, but I did not want to have to fight for my deposit back for not doing the other cleaning. Typically other properties might request putting in the first load of laundry or running the dish washer before departure and then have a cleaning free-at least that is clear and stress free, rather than this situation. We would not recommend this property not stay here again.

Truly a hidden gem especially for Wells College families. I had 8 family members that needed a place to stay for Graduation and this was the perfect spot. Less then 10 minutes from the school. A home away from home plus so much more. Relaxing lake with dock and canoes to use. The kitchen has everything you possibly need to host a fun dinner for friends and family. Lots of space both inside and outside. I highly recommend this jewel 👍?👍?👍?👍?👍?

This is a beautiful home on a beautiful property. It is spacious yet cozy; the layout is nice for a big group to relax together. Photos give an accurate picture of the layout. There are plenty of chairs (table and lounge) and two nice tables for meals (and more outdoors on the porch). The kitchen has lots of counter space for several people to prepare meals together. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans and dishes of all kind. Beds are comfortable and clean, as was the entire home. We enjoyed the fireplace as well.

It was VERY easy to communicate with the owners; they responded very promptly and were friendly and accommodating.

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here with a few of my buddies While we fished a tournament on Cayuga Lake . House was spacious, clean and had all the amenities needed for weeks stay .

Being right on the lake it was great when you want to take a break during the day and just drive your boat up to the dock space have some lunch and head right back out . Beautiful sunsets and a great location if you're interested in on Beautiful sunsets and a great location if you're interested in winery tours.

Had the pleasure of meeting the owner jim and he made us feel right at home .

Look forward to heading back here soon

Awesome lake front getaway!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great long weekend at Cayuga lake. We came in from Michigan to watch a Cornell football game and this turned out to be a great vacation rental for a larger group. We had 3 children ages 8-12, two senior citizens and one adult and it was enough room so we weren't on top of each other. The kids loved to waterfront, we stayed in October so we didn't swim but still loved the view:). We used the ovens to bake pies and that worked great, the stovetop was in working order, but the burners were a little slanted and that was somewhat difficult. The washer, dryer and dishwasher were very nice features and the beds were comfortable for a great nights rest:). It turned out to be a 40 minute drive into Ithaca which seemed long at first, but the scenery was so nice we really ended up enjoying the drive too despite the length of it. The Internet was easy to use and fast so I could actually submit paperwork from there to my job and download documents. The cable package is nice and the kids were in heaven because there were so many more channels than we have at home. Overall I recommend this rental highly and we will make it a yearly stop until my nephew's days at Cornell are done.

Owner's Response: We are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay and even happier you are coming back! Next year we hope you'll have time to enjoy the local area as well. We take pride in accommodating our guests. The burners are removable, and may not have been put back properly after cleaning. We would have welcomed your call to take of that. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

About James & Candace Casey

Jim and I met in college, fell in love with each other, and Cayuga Lake. We married, started a business, raised our young children and left the region 20 years ago. We maintained lifelong friendships, and always longed to return. About a year ago the opportunity arose to buy this piece of paradise. We revamped the house and had many happy guests last season from another website. Because we're not ready to retire yet we share this lake house with our guests and hope you make many happy memories here.

Why James & Candace Casey chose Union Springs

The beauty of this region unfolds season after season, never failing to amaze us. Boating, swimming, water skiing on Cayuga Lake is heaven on earth. The Finger Lakes are even better 30 years later with new wineries, and business enterprises growing, and preserved history. The Woman's Rights Hall of Fame, Seward's Home, Harriet Tubman House, concerts, wineries, fresh produce, Cheese Trail, Aurora Inn. Rochester and the salt city, Syracuse are both less than an hour away.

What makes this house unique

It's a great house for entertaining inside and out on the lake with all the water activities set on a large property with village amenities.

The view of the lake is ever changing. Who knew sunsets could last so long with colors in the clouds and sky even after the sun goes down?
