About Cathy & John

We are both retired river guides, who put together the hiking guide to Curry County, From Sea To Summit. We have extensive hiking and boating experience in this remote region.

Cathy & John purchased this house in 1994

Why Cathy & John chose Southern Coast

This house is an old spirit, a friendly old spirit and when you walk in the door you will recognise the simple pleasure of a uncluttered home that's rich in the town's history.

What makes this house unique

Our house is one of the few 100yr old houses left in our village, its a wonderful smaller house with an extra lot to fill with organically grown berries and many colors of roses. Short walks take you to long views!!

Fun, quirky, and delightful, with great attention to details!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in the Powder House; the place had a story and a lot of personality. Our hosts provided extensive information on things to do in the area, an artistic touch at every turn, and lots of personal touches that were well thought out. We loved the garden and patio areas, as well as the sunroom bed area which was perfect for a warm nap in the day and fun to see the stars at night. There was a charcoal grill to use, but no briquettes; it would have been nice to know we should get some ahead of time, but other than that, we had a wonderful stay! Thanks again!

Owner's Response: Sheena, Thanks much for the review; there are many wonderful things to see and do on the Wild Rivers Coast. We are happy that you enjoyed the house, we lived at The Powder House for many years and still miss naps in the sunroom!! We will get the briquettes over there, thanks for the feed back. Glad you had a good time! Hope to see you again! John and Cathy

The Powder House is a fun, funky, colorful place to enjoy a relaxing vacation. We liked not having a television and caught up on our reading, music (my husband on his guitar), worked crossword puzzles and just relaxed. The house is very clean, beds are comfortable, and on a cold morning, the space heaters were appreciated. Loved the various collections of different things inside and outside of the house!

Comfortable stay in beautiful town

  • 5 of 5

I loved this place--one of my favorites in a long time! Easy to take incredible beach, bluff, and forest walks from this place. Loved the garden, the room with the bed looking on to the garden, the upstairs bedroom where I slept better than I have in years. Two writers/hikers celebrating 25th anniversary and could not have found a better place to do it.

A home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

We, a couple with dogs, stayed at The Powder House for a long weekend during the heart of spring and found it truly to be a home away from home! It was clean, well stocked, and homey, with natural light and small spots of flowers throughout. On the rainy days we hunkered down inside, read and played games, and cooked and enjoyed meals. On the sunny days, we drove south to the northern most stands of Redwoods and to play/hike along what is one of the most beautiful stretches of Oregon coastline I've seen, and north to check out the lighthouse and stunning rivers. Being in Port Orford was really a great jumping off point from which to explore the area, and there was a lot of useful information in the house that aided in our explorations. There's also beaches in Port Orford within walking distance from the house. Oh, and the bed was comfy! Thank you John & Kathy for a welcoming stay!

'One of Port Orford's charming and historical gems.'Located in Port Orford, Oregon

The Gateway to Oregon's Wild Rivers Coast.

A bright and cheery historic house, the Powder House has stood it’s ground for 100 years. The towns explosives (powder) were stored behind its walls, at least one baby was born upstairs. Folks settled in for the radio era, the TV era and now the internet era; the house still stands proudly just painted bright blue. Folks come tho take long naps, read thick books, barbecue fish, pick berries from the garden, smell the roses, or just to sit and listen to the spirit of this house that stands at the center of our little village.
