Wonderful home base for Oregon Coast relaxation and hiking

  • 5 of 5

The house is painted the most cheerful shade of blue, and inside await delicious baked goods and a comfy home with all the basics that you will need. We enjoyed hiking Humbug Mountain, and checking out Port Orford Heads State Park, and Cape Blanco.

Cozy retreat on the wild southern Oregon coast

  • 5 of 5

Just the two of us, but great for two couples or a family. Plenty of room for privacy, but also great spaces to share. The Powder House is really comfortable. The kitchen is well-equipped and, between the food co-op, South Coast Gourmet and Ray's Market, there are some great ingredients to cook with. So many great places to explore! We hiked headlands and beaches, explored the art galleries, visited the docks and tasted some great South Coast beers. Several calm days of nearly 60 degree weather on the beach in the middle of December! We definitely need to come back with more time to explore this wild, unspoiled coastline and backcountry. Cathy and John were excellent hosts and are great sources of local beta!

Cheerful, charming, cozy; great location for vacationing!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed every minute of our one-week stay in the Powder House. It was pleasant and relaxing just to spend time hanging out in the house, e.g. to read a book, be on your device, sit in the sun on the back deck. At the same time, the location close to Port Orford's center and Highway 101, makes it a great base for walks around town or parks or beaches, grocery shopping, day trips in the car, restaurants, etc.

The house is well equipped: full kitchen, washer/dryer, wifi, Music CD player, comfy beds, linens, towels (no TV which was fine for us). The colorful interior decor is cheerful, fun, clean.

All in all a lovely place to stay, in the lovely town of Port Orford. We're ready to come again.

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

We've had two stays here, and we always have a great time. I love the location, and really appreciate the character of the house itself. The color scheme is amazing! The owners seem like genuinely good people who care about their house and your comfort/enjoyment.

Great location to breathtaking beaches and hikes, charming house, excellent owners, clean

  • 4 of 5

When we arrived there were fresh, handmade scones for us from the owners. We loved cooking and eating on the back deck- feels like a secluded garden. Walking distance to battle rock- the beach is amazing. Easy interchange with owners, down to earth and friendly, they had plenty of helpful information in the house for hikes, beaches, and other activities in town. Kitchen well stocked. Beds comfortable. Only criticism was that curtains did not fully cover window in downstairs bedroom. We had a great time!

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed your visit and your stay in our house. The drape fabric is a family heirloom; my grandmother worked for Janzen and I ended up with her boxes of fabric. I loved the one with ladybugs hanging laundry etc. so I turned them into drapes, but didn't realize how much the sun would fade, and shrink the fabric. I guess I will have to retire them and sew some new ones. Thanks for you input! Hope to see you again!

'One of Port Orford's charming and historical gems.'Located in Port Orford, Oregon

The Gateway to Oregon's Wild Rivers Coast.

A bright and cheery historic house, the Powder House has stood it’s ground for 100 years. The towns explosives (powder) were stored behind its walls, at least one baby was born upstairs. Folks settled in for the radio era, the TV era and now the internet era; the house still stands proudly just painted bright blue. Folks come tho take long naps, read thick books, barbecue fish, pick berries from the garden, smell the roses, or just to sit and listen to the spirit of this house that stands at the center of our little village.
