About Lyle McCormick and/or Linda Taylor

Linda Taylor teaches literature and writing at Oglethorpe University. She has published well over 100 poems in a number of journals including The Georgia Review, The Kenyon Review, The Ohio Review, Black Warrior Review,…

When at the Forest Hill cottage, Linda enjoys sitting and writing on the front porch where she can hear the many variety of birds.

Lyle McCormick is recently retired from more than 12 years working as a contractor with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although not a published writer, he says being at the cottage on Forest Hill brings him back to himself.

Lyle McCormick and/or Linda Taylor purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Lyle McCormick and/or Linda Taylor chose Central Coast

We fell in love with this cottage for its fir wood floors, which we day lighted, and it's large, old fashioned windows. We fell in love with this quaint cottage for its beautiful setting near old growth forest and both rock and sandy beach, and enjoyed the 2+ years of renovating and furnishing it. It was a creative project for us.

What makes this cottage unique

Linda loves to use it as a place to work on poetry and her novel. Lyle loves the serenity of the surroundings and the rejuvenating effects of being by the ocean and the national forest. We both enjoy the walks on the 804 that we make everyday, getting breakfast at the Green Salmon coffee shop, watching the sunsets, and experiencing the local culture in this friendly, small town.

Comfortable and cozy

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay very much. The cottage is cute, clean and has everything you need including washer and dryer which are some times hard to find in a reasonably priced rental. Even though the house is on the east side of hwy. 101 we could still hear the ocean. So nice to hear when drifting off to sleep in the comfortable bed. Lots of music, games and books for entertainment. We spent a lot of time at the beach and came back to cook and rest. Thank you to the owners Lyle and Linda for sharing their home with travelers and to Pat who keeps the cottage clean and organized.

Owner's Response: Thank you for mentioning and thanking Pat, who does such a wonderful job not only cleaning but managing the cottage when Linda and I cannot be there. Thank you, too, for not only mentioning some of the amenities such as the washer and dryer, but also emphasizing the comfortableness and coziness of the cottage. Those qualities, as well as the feeling of being welcomed, are what Linda and I most want for our guests. I hope you can come back soon!.

This cottage was warm and inviting. It is surrounded by nature with a large yard and lovely sunroom

  • 4 of 5

The owners Lyle and Linda and caretaker Pat, quickly responded to my questions. The charming village of Yachats has a nice selection of restaurants and gift shops. I found everything I needed at the C&K grocery which has a nice selection of organic and some gluten free foods. The city of Yachats provides a variety of activities such as the Agate Festival.which was very informative and a lot of fun.

Waldport is a nearby town that has a hardware store. Newport which is about 30 min. drive from Yachats has a Waldgreens Pharmacy and limited physicians services.

Newport offers some beautiful scenery including the Yaquina Lighthouse, an Aquarium and the OSU Hatfield Marine Science center including a very interesting. museum. Heading south from Yachats you'll see the beautiful Heceta Light house and an active group of sea lions. You can see the sand dunes in Florence from this rest stop.

The pounding of the waves could be heard and felt up at the house and on clear nights, the Milky Way was breathtaking.

While the interior could be updated a bit including a full size sofa in the living room.

The cottage was spotless when we arrived

and its 'obvious that the cottage is well maintained.

I was kindly reminded of two safety issues. Follow the tide tables and never turn your back on the ocean. Sneaker waves can appear out of nowhere and pose a severe safety problem. Keep yourself and kids away from rocks and logs that are close to the water.

Pets; especially small pets must be close to you on a leash at all times. Coyotes, mountain lions and cougar can be nearby in the woods. Bears don't have a deep hibernation due to the warmer weather.

It was a beautiful six week experience and I hope to visit Yachats again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for pointing out so many ways that Yachats and the Central Oregon coast are so charming. Lynne, you are the first guest that suggested the interior might use some updating. Linda and I spent many months and many thousands of dollars updating the house from the way it was when we purchased it, and much time and care went into making sure the updates did not detract from its original charm. The cottage is charming, but is not huge, and there is no way a full-size sofa would fit in the living room, so we have a love seat which fits the size and character of the room and the entire cottage. The safety issues, as you present them, are not very inviting. Yes, one can watch the tide tables, but one of the beautiful things about the Ocean is how different it is when the tides are going out and coming in. If you stay on the 804 trail, you will be safe. Also, because we are on the edge of the Siuslaw National Forest, there are coyotes and bears, etc. However, if you keep your pet on a leash, as you suggest, and don't let them out unattended at night, there should be no problem. The issue of the pet's safety is no longer an issue for anyone staying at our cottage, for we no longer accept any pets.

A beautiful and comfy place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with my mom in the past and just loved it there. I recently got engaged and we wanted to do something nice to celebrate. My fiancé never experienced Oregon before. He just loved his experience there! Sad to leave but we'll definitely love to stay again!

Thank you,

Chris and Julie

Owner's Response: What a treat it has been to have you stay again, and a what a compliment it is that based on the experience of your earlier stay with your mother, you chose our cottage as the place to bring your new fiancé and introduce him to Oregon. It pleases Linda and me very much that you found the cottage to be comfy, for we renovated and furnished it with the hope that not only we but our guests, as well, would find it to be warm and inviting. Perhaps we succeeded too well for we, too, are always sad when it comes time to leave. However, it's great to hear that you definitely want to stay again...for both of you will always be welcome. Again, thank you.

Fabulous Gettaway from the heat in Sun City Summerlin

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is just far enough away from the 101 Hwy to be very quiet. We enjoyed not only the home and all of its amenities, but also the wonderful shielded outside porch in the back. Only wished that, as a photographer, I had been there while the 15 ft. X 15 ft. red rhododendron and the 8 ft. X 8 ft. white rhododendron were in full bloom (May June?) The cottage had everything we needed.

Besides walking the 804 we found a great walking beach 1/2 way towards Waldport, where we walked for about 2 miles every day. (This wonderful daily walk made me feel 10 years younger - which is a miracle since I shall be 75 soon.) On the Beachside Beach I found not only agates but also jasper according to the Rock Shop owner down the lane.

The weather during our 37 day stay was wonderful. It's wonderful to be able to open the windows and let the fresh air in (instead of the 100 + heat in the Las Vegas area) I happen to love a llittle drizzle - since it just curls my hair more. I had brought along a little flat screen TV in order to watch my shows and international movies via my ROKU. Since the cottage offers great WIFI, the ROKU was possible.

WE SHALL RETURN !!!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR COTTAGE.

Owner's Response: Once again our wonderful guests have discovered things we have not been aware of in and on the wonderful beaches in and around Yachats. We knew it was a great area for agates, but we never knew one could find jasper. Also, our walking has been pretty much restricted to the 804, so thank you for discovering the great walking beach as you go toward Waldport. The outside deck is waiting, so PLEASE DO RETURN!!! We love SHARING OUR COTTAGE with such lovely guests as you and your husband.

Perfect for our family

  • 5 of 5

What a sweet little home with everything we needed to enjoy our stay. Our 4 year old enjoyed the yard, rock shop at the end of the street and, of course, all the wonders Yachats offers. Kitchen stocked for cooking (even has sharp knives) and comfortable beds. We're looking forward to staying again!

Owner's Response: When one thinks of Yachats they often think of the hiking paths at Cape Perpetua, Devil's Churn, delicious seafood at one of the Yachats restaurants, and the scenic dive south on Highway 101. Yet, when one looks at the world through the eyes of a 4 year old, one often discovers even closer treasures, such as a grassy lawn set against the backdrop of the Siuslaw National Forest, or a rock shop at the end of our quiet street. We look forward to your next stay.

A Yachats Treasure

  • 5 of 5

We loved Yachats last year, loved the town and came back this year in May. We stayed at the Cottage and it made our stay even better than the previous year. The cottage is magnificent, attention to detail makes the stay so comfortable, it's clean, quiet and minutes from town. Thank you Lyle and Linda and of course Pat.

Owner's Response: Thank you,, and a special thanks for mentioning and thanking Pat. Linda, with my help, is responsible for the attention to detail, but Pat deserves the credit for the ongoing care of the cottage, as well as being a resource for our guests should they have questions. Thank you, too, for mentioning the quiet as well as the proximity to Yachats. That's one of the reasons Linda and I fell in love with the cottage when we first saw it. It is far enough out of town to feel in the country, and our guests sometimes report seeing deer or other wildlife in our yard or along the road. Yet, at the same time, the center of Yachats is only a mile away. Thank you, and we look forward to having you as our guests again.

Yachats, known as the “Gem of the Oregon Coast”, is adjacent to Cape Perpetua, which is its highest point, offering breath taking views the ocean, headlands, and forest. The town itself is also known as a friendly gathering place for artists, artisans, writers, free spirits, and lovers of nature. This community provides a rich context for anyone involved in these things. In addition to a great place for fishing and crabbing, the town offers good restaurants with live music, and festivals in spring, summer, and fall. Although the Spring, Summer and Fall are spectacularly beautiful, many come in the Winter to watch the storms come in off of the ocean. The town provides activities for children and youth, and the neighboring towns of Florence and Newport offer many recreational activities including dune buggy rides, whale watching trips, and helicopter rides. The Alsea, one of two lovely rivers near us, is particularly known for canoeing, kayaking, camping, and other recreational opportunities.
