About the property

Cottage on the River and Marsh - Great Views, Quiet Area, Very Peaceful

River Tide cottage is both waterfront and marshfront. In remote, Shellman Bluff, GA, it's just 12 minutes from I-95 and 20 minutes to the small towns of Richmond Hill and Darien. Best of all, it's just 40 minutes to Savannah or St. Simons Island.

Features: WIRELESS INTERNET and three flat screen TV's with 72 channels. BLU RAY and DVD.

If you're looking for a quiet place to unwind, this is it. Feast your eyes on the miles of tidal marsh and blue water. Take in the salty air and the peace of this unique environment. Watch the herons, egrets, ducks and pelicans feed in the marsh. Relax under our palms, cut our camellias in February, or sample our back yard tangerines and winter kumquats and loquats. Most of all, enjoy our screened porch facing the sunset. Use our backyard dock to swim, kayak and visit. Clean your shrimp, fish and crabs at the dock sink. (We keep nets and traps). Cook them on our outdoor gas grill. While you're here, take the state ferry out to Sapelo Island or visit the exotic bird sanctuary at Harris Neck Nat'l Wildlife Refuge, 10 minutes away. Our high seasons are Summer, Spring, and Fall, but we also have sunny winter months, where the average highs are in the low sixties. This is the Low Country at its best.

Our home is not fancy, but it's more than comfortable, always spotless and you can trust that we've thought of everything. There are ample stocks of glassware, cookware, dishes, pots/pans, towels, sheets and so many small touches. But in the end, visiting here is all about the water, the marsh views, and the dock. The home is on a wide tidal creek just 300' from the White Chimney river that leads to the Intra-Coastal Waterway (ICW) and Sapelo Island. The water is navigable much of, but not all of the day. It comes and goes twice daily with the tides. At high tide, the water is 6 feet deep and feels very protected at this end of the creek. For boaters, there is a deep water public ramp 1/2 mile from the house... you can see it from our dock. Also, we keep four kayaks and several floaties for your use as well. Getting out on the marsh in a kayak or swimming in the fresh salt water is one of the best reasons to visit the area. (Be sure read up on the tides before you go out!)

Things To Do: e-mail us for an activities list. For shoppers, the 'Darien Outlet Mall' is on I-95 just 20 minutes away. Finally, enjoy our 'corn hole' games, croquet, and bocce games. Be sure to use our kayaks on the river.

Amazingly, The New York Times travel editor visited Shellman Bluff in 2006. You can Google 'AMERICAN JOURNEYS; Shifting Sands and a Slow Pace on the Georgia Coast' to see the article.

Come and enjoy!

About Tom Ellicott

We live in Atlanta, but always wanted a home in the Low Country. We bought this property for the waterfront lifestyle, the marsh, and to get away from it all. We love that there are only 14,000 people and 2 stop lights in the entire county. That's our kind of place. (GA RE LIC #300532.)

Tom Ellicott purchased this house in 2013

Why Tom Ellicott chose Georgia

We love the remote location. Looking for sandy roads and no traffic? Looking for a night sky filled with stars? This is it. It's like a step back into the 1950's. And we love the nearby fresh seafood restaurants... Truly, there are 5 of them are within 3 miles and while there is enough nearby shopping to be convenient, you'll never deal with cars, crowds, or traffic. Clydes convenience store (it serves a good breakfast and lunch too!) is just 5 minutes away and The Piggly Wiggly is 10 minutes away. Also, go to Hunters restaurant at Shellman Bluff for great fried shrimp or fresh fish. Or buy fresh seafood at 'DockSide' (literally around the corner) then use our grill and dine on the screened porch for the sunset dinners. Or go over to JT's, AKA, the 'Flip Flop Bar /now called the Old Rebel bar' ... for pizza and live music. Slow local pace, but everything you'll need. Also, be sure to head up to the Sunbury Crab Co for a scenic and fun meal in Midway, GA, just 15 minutes up the highway.

Notes:
The place to be at the River House is on the screened porch. There is a small dining table (for 4) on the side porch in addition to seating for 6 on the back. Just sit and enjoy the water and bird life. There is always bird activity! Morning coffee on the screened porch - or at the dock house - is my favorite time of the day. But my Mom's favorite time of the day is 'wine time' on the porch at sunset. Take your pick:) We have lots of guests with kids. Kids love the dock and the salt water. Because it's 'tidal', the water is only 6' deep at the dock and it feels very protected at our end of the river. Swim, splash, kayak, use rafts, but enjoy the water!

Great location for nature lovers

  • 4 of 5

We are outdoorsy people so we loved the location of this home. It was quiet, great for bird watching, we enjoyed the provided kayaks and the fire pit. The décor and beds could really use an update, but the home was comfortable.

Nice place, wretched house water

  • 1 of 5

While the house was neat, clean, nicely furnished and on the marsh...the water for use in the house was the very worst we have ever experienced. Not only was it not suitable for consumption as advised by the rental agent, the smell was beyond description. We ran the water long enough to clear any problem with the water heater but never cleared during the entire stay. It has the same smell as the paper mill located several miles away. Do not bathe with or wash clothes in this water. It is a real shame that such a nice place has such a terrible problem.

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying with us. We tell folks up front in our welcome materials that the home has well water and that bottled water is much preferred. Our well water is not delightful, that's for sure. But it's perfectly safe and fine to bathe in and to use for laundry and to drink (though I almost always buy bottled water). I use it for coffee too.... and we wash clothes in it regularly. I will admit, the water has an unpleasant sulphorous scent. Obviously, our guest was not pleased, that's for sure:) But we have rented this home scores of times... and this is the first time we've had a review like this. We work so hard to deliver a clean, pleasant, well furnished and well equipped home. I'm sorry to see this one feature highlighted. To be clear, the home has well water. It's drawn from the aquifer and it's been tested for safety at the St. Simons Island federal lab. I'm sorry it did not please you... and I understand. My mom hates it too:)

Very clean and well maintained.

  • 5 of 5

The house was very spacious and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked and we enjoyed using Netflix on the day we had rain and storms roll through. The dock provided plenty of entertainment. We used the cast net, crab trap, and also paddled around in the kayaks. The screened in porch was perfect for enjoying the outdoors without the bugs! Tom was great in informing us about the water (definitely not a delicate taste!) and the bugs, so we were not caught off guard. It was a great place to relax and unwind!

Perfect place to unwind and relax...

  • 5 of 5

I don't know where to start...the house is great, the location was perfect, and the views were amazing. I thought the house looked great via the pictures but it was even better in person. The house is super clean and you can tell that the home is well taken care of.

My favorite locations were the screened-in porch where you could read, watch the tides or the birds and just relax. The other favorite was the green recliner in the main room, I could have slept there.

The entire booking process was a breeze and Daniella was so easy to work with. I am hoping I can make a return trip in a few months as this might be my new destressor location.

Thanks Tom for sharing your home, it was exactly what I needed.

Beautiful and Convenient

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for a few days in August for our anniversary. The property itself was very clean and exactly as promised. We always felt safe, even walking our dog on the street at night. The location is also very convenient to Savannah, Saint Simon's, Jekyll, etc. but you don't need to travel anywhere but the back yard to have a wonderful time! The location was easy to find, but remote enough that we both felt we were able to truly disconnect from the work world and have a real vacation. Having coffee and watching the tide roll in while the Yellow-Crowned Night Herons, Snowy Egrets, Osprey, and Wood Stork all played was simply fantastic. We cannot wait to come back!

Also, the home is located in close proximity to several highly-rated hole-in-the-wall restaurants. They kayaks provided by the owners are in great condition. Highly recommended--I'd love to live here.

Located in Shellman Bluff, this home is typical of Coastal GA fish camp areas... The lots are about 115' wide on the river.. and like this one, most have docks. The street is not fancy... it has all types of homes. But they all have live oaks draped in Spanish moss, some palms, and more marsh and water than the eye can take in. You can swim, crab or fish off our dock. Park your boat or trailer in our driveway. There are also 4 good nearby fresh seafood restaurants; look for today's catch of fish, blue crabs, shrimp, and oysters. Speaking of seafood restaurants... Drive over to Crescent to try Pelican Point or head up to Midway to try the Sunbury Crab Company and don't miss Skippers in Darien. Google them. Trust me, these are not like your chain restaurants! Also, don't forget to golf in Shellman Bluff... The Sapelo Hammock Country Club is just 5 minutes away and is open to the public and surprisingly affordable.

There are so many nearby things to do. But they all spell 'Food' and 'Nature'. The birdlife is other-worldly. Watch the pelicans dive at the Shellman Bluff pier. Visit the Harris Neck Nat'l Wildlife Refuge to observe the spoonbill cranes and wood storks. But mostly, visiting Shellman Bluff is about the feeling that overtakes you when you're by the marsh. But be sure to get out on the water: use our kayaks or let one of the Shellman Bluff captains take you out on an affordable water tour. Also, explore the nearby barrier islands: Blackbeard, St. Simons, Jekyll, Tybee, Hilton Head, Amelia, or take the ferry to Sapelo or even Cumberland Island. These are some of the last great undisturbed barrier islands on the east coast. And if you're up for it, head down to the great Okefenokee! Here at the house, have fun with our cornhole boards, play croquet on the lawn, or use our kayaks. Just enjoy the outdoors.

Experience the mystery and sacredness of one the last stretches of the East coast that is truly remote. It's like a step back in time.

Cell Service: Verizon works well. ATT service is good also. The house has local phone service, cable TV, and wireless internet.
