I am a custom home builder in the Houston area. My wife is our real estate broker. We love to travel.
We love going skiing in Colorado. The biking, hiking and views are spectacular.
We loved our stay in Crested Butte and at this property. The owners have taken great care to transform this property from a family vacation home to a vacation rental property that feels like a home away from home. It is very clean and well appointed and it had more than enough of everything - storage space, dishes, cups, bathrooms, hot water, etc to accommodate our large group. This two level townhouse has 4.5 bathrooms - a full bath in each of the 3 king bed bedrooms, another full bath in the futon/tv room and a half bath in the entryway. Given the size of our group and the cold temperatures, we wondered if we would run out of hot water….. we never did. What a pleasant surprise!
Although it is not possible to ski in and out of this townhouse, one of the lifts is not far. We had been advised that due to the proximity to the ski slopes and the regularity of the Crested Butte Shuttle service, a car was not needed to vacation in Crested Butte. I would say that although this was true, a car would have improved our experience. This property is approximately a 8-10 minute walk from the nearest shuttle stop on the Snodgrass Condo Route. For the winter of '13/'14, that means that there is only one shuttle per hour (leaves Base at :55 past the hour, drops off/picks up at nearest bus stop at top of the hour). From Base to Crested Butte however, there are 4 shuttles per hour. And, the drivers are very nice & helpful. When we caught a shuttle from town and were afraid we would miss the Snodgrass route, the driver radioed ahead to let our Condo bus know to wait. Not having a car limited our ability to take advantage of some of the other things the CB area has to offer. Snowmobiling, sleigh rides and hot springs are all near by, but not accessible on a bus route. So, for an optimal experience in the Crested Butte area, we would suggest a car rental. If you decide to fly in to Gunnison and don't rent a car (as we did), Dolly's Mountain Shuttle are super for transport to and from the airport, but be sure to book in advance.
In my opinion, the only thing that the owners could do to improve the property as a rental is to assemble an information binder. We managed to figure out the where to catch the shuttle and it's schedule, the lift schedules, how to operate the dvd player, etc. But, it would be lovely to have some pertinent information assembled for guests.
Overall, this was a fantastic property and I highly recommend it!
Beautifully appointed as the pictures show, but room for improvement as an overall experience.
First, I was surprised to find it was a duplex. Retrospective review of photo at the edge of cropping belies that possibility, but use of the word "house" in description seemed disingenuous.
Second, we felt to be intruding rather than welcomed. Several of us were unable to unpack luggage due to dresser and bathroom drawers being full of owners items. We eventually cleared one shelf of one cupboard in the kitchen for our food, but felt guilty doing so. The refrigerator was over half full and the freezer was almost completely full. We had to rearrange it just to fit a single quart of ice cream.
Finally, inadequate kitchen items. This was shocking. There were only 2 small glasses, one water glass, and two mismatched wine glasses. There were a few random sippy cups etc, and there may have been more wine glasses elsewhere, but we had to use disposable red solo cups and wash cereal bowls after the parents ate so the kids would have bowls. Many other kitchen items were in abundance, but glasses and bowls are basic.
We may have been the first renters, so I hope I am helping the owners grow into their role rather than being hypercritical. There already has been positive change as they did reclassify the bedroom count and sleep number to reflect having converted the fourth bedroom to a tv game room. A few more small changes will make this a much more enjoyable experience.
