About the property

Welcome to Shangri-La on the Russian river, a relaxing and regenerative vacation home in the 'heart' of the Sonoma County Wine Country. The river 'comes alive' through the lens of a wall of windows and a wraparound deck which creates a front row seat to exotic wildlife, seasonal landscape, and the ever-changing river.

This Craftsman 1940's style cottage is airy and light, which is enhanced by newly installed skylights throughout the living areas. The cottage features a gourmet kitchen with stainless steel Frigidaire Professional 4 burner gas range, stainless steel dishwasher, stainless steel Frigidaire refrigerator, and microwave. A kitchen door opens up to the wraparound deck and easy access to the outdoor gas grill. All bedrooms are cozy and feature newly purchased queen size beds. A new LA-Z Boy sofa/sleeper with an upgraded air comfort mattress provides another sleeping option in the living room.

Original art by internationally acclaimed artists gives this vacation home a European sensibility. Dining on the birch table with Italian inspired William of Sonoma tableware furthers this eclectic atmosphere. The dining table, with retractable leaf, seats up to 10 guests. A kitchen door opens onto the deck, with easy access to an outdoor gas grill and the wraparound deck. You will enjoy great outdoor living while enjoying an espresso, fine wine, or a barbecue masterpiece while dining on Teak outdoor furniture that seats up to 9 guests.

The living room has open wood beamed ceilings with a ceiling fan, abundant windows with new window treatments and skylights. The queen size LA-Z Boy sleeper/sofa is tastefully positioned and is easily converted to sleeping position. Guests enjoy a large selection of books, over 1000 DVD's, many board games, foosball, a 60' HD TV with cable and a Blu-Ray player, radio, and WiFi service.

The spa is completely private, accommodating up to 6 guests, and offers an enhanced experience with nature as one views the stars at night while listening to the gentle song of the river. The Sunroom opens up to the spa and deck through sliding glass doors and has a wall of windows with a spectacular view of the river. This same room has a couch which easily converts to a single bed. Built in cabinets provide plenty of extra linens and towels for the spa and bathroom. Between the two bedrooms is a Jack and Jill bathroom with soaking tub and freestanding shower.

A detached 'Game room' sits next to the main house. This 'bonus' room opens onto a Zen style wooden deck overlooking a meditation garden and stairway to the beach. The 'Game room' has a newly remodeled bathroom with shower, sink and commode. This room also has 2 sofa/sleeper beds and a Murphy bed. For sports fans, there is a classic wooden foosball table by Harvard.

Seasonal guests can use 4 large river tubes with paddles. This season begins when the river dam is in place (approx. July 4th through Labor Day). A private railed concrete stairway leading from the East garden to the River's edge is easy access to water sports, swimming, fishing and sunbathing on the beach. An outdoor shower is conveniently located near the river stairway for a quick and easy rinse-off when returning from the beach.

The cottage is surrounded by trees include huge redwood and bay trees. A fence surrounds the property. There is ample off-road parking on the property. The cottage is secluded with only one nearby neighbor.

Day passes to the Parkpoint Health and Swim Club are available for reasonable rates and just minutes away. Sonoma Lake, Wineries and Sonoma adventures are all at your doorstep while staying at the Healdsburg Riverside Retreat. Additionally, the owner, who is a Sonoma County Certified Tourist Ambassador, is available to help you create an exciting itinerary during your stay.

Come and enjoy a Zen like getaway in the mystical setting of Shangri-La on the Russian river!!!!

River Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 days and had a wonderful time. This home checked all of the boxes: River access for "River Sits", a large porch with a fantastic view, a large living room for us to hang out, a modern kitchen and plenty of parking. Not to mention the hot tub and the get-a-way unit in the back. This house allowed us our alone time, as well as our together time. What a refreshing way to wind down our summer. We will definitely be back!!! Thanks for sharing this little piece of paradise with us.

Northern CA / Russian River Retreat - at its best !

  • 5 of 5

I have been fortunate enough to stay at this lovely, picturesque and tranquil retreat. I'm so happy that there are still a few places around like this today that one can enjoy a true retreat - yet so close to San Francisco (one of the most magnificent cities in the world!)

I’m embarrassed to say that I’m only now writing a review after a few stays at this jewel on the Russian River. I don’t review many things – so, forgive the nature of my writing style.

With the recent rains, the Russian River was bustling and full of life. The wild life seem to love this area of the river. Blue heron, deer, hawks, beaver… The cottage is located at a most precious part of the Russian River. Just a few minutes away from downtown Healdsburg but it feel as if it's thousands of miles away from the SF city life. Yet, remarkably close by car to SF - just a short ride up 101.

Specifically - the cottage is located at an elbow of the river. This location makes it feel as if it’s a million miles away from civilization. Looking out the back is what appears to be a water color painting that a famous painter may have brushed … But, this is real ! From sunrise to sunset – as well as night time with the moon shining through the skylights – the cottage has a warmness about it. A real homey feeling that welcomes you. And, doesn’t wish for you to leave.

With all the comforts of home – it is also a place where you can leave it all behind you. Along with comfortable beds to sleep … (the cottage can sleep a LOT of people should you choose…) and located directly up a very nice set of cement steps (with sturdy steel railing) from the river. The lovely sound of the rushing Russian River and the wildlife is exactly what the doctor ordered! I feel as if I could stay and stay – and stay. The stresses of everyday life are left behind.

As I stated at the top – I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to stay at the cottage more than once now. And, there have been upgrades and elements of the infrastructure that have been improved upon. For my taste – it is “just right” but I’m quite sure the owners will continue to make the cottage nicer and nicer without ruining the Northern California / Russian River Retreat atmosphere and hominess that they have today.

Not too rustic and not too modern. Very, very comfortable and lovely. With the rustic being focused clearly on the beautiful nature out the back deck and windows.

Charming with some quirks

  • 3 of 5

Charming little house in a great location. We really loved it and wanted it to become a favorite to come back to. We rented it for 3 nights over the Thanksgiving holiday just for our family of 4 - wife, myself, and 2 little kids.

On the plus side - the sun room is amazing, the hot tub was great, the easy access (though with a section of slippery muddy trail below the stairs) was great. Quiet except for occasional car driving by. Isolated so that you can barely notice any neighbors. TVs with DVD/bluray players, and a ton of DVDs to watch. Good WiFi. Big living room with lots of seating space and carpet space for kids to play. The owner was nice and helpful, and very responsive to emails.

We had a good time, and could have been even better if we managed to get any sleep...

Our main issue was the uncomfortable beds. We are not usually sensitive to that, but both my wife and I had trouble falling and staying asleep.

Combining that with the fact it rained some of the time we were there, the noise from the rain on the roof was so loud, we barely slept while it was raining.

Much more minor issues that you might want to be aware of:

- Cleanliness was good as long as you don't look under the beds or sofas. Since we wanted to move the sofas a bit for better movie viewing, and also had to look under the beds for toys dropped by the kids, we discovered the cleaners really could have been a lot more thorough.

- Noise: the sound proofing is pretty poor, so every car driving past, sounds like it just drove through the bedroom. Maybe this was made worse because of the wet roads.

- While the house has a second bathroom, it's in the detached game room and not in the main house. when it's cold/wet having to walk out to that other unit is a pain. Also since we were not really using it, we didn't heat it up, so made do with the 1 bathroom.

- The bedrooms are very small. Not much beyond standing room between the beds and walls/furniture.

- Some of the appliances are very (very) old. The microwave oven is I would guess possible from the first ever sold. Amazingly, it works, but not so well. Had trouble getting packs of microwave popcorn to be predictably done. Luckily the fridge, stove, cofee maker, toaster oven, are much better.

We would certainly want to go back there if the beds ever got replaced...

wonderful relaxing getaway!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here with our twin 5 year old sons and could not have had a better time! We were visiting from Va and planned to visit vineyards but could hardly stand to leave the cottage! This cottage truly has one of the best spots on the Russian River with lots of beach area, an island, calm areas and some gentle rapids...perfect for the kids as well as very relaxing for adults! The house was very clean and had a fully equipped kitchen. We enjoyed getting all the delicious groceries we needed at the near by John's Market and cooking at the cottage. We also really enjoyed the huge dvd collection! We don't watch a lot of TV but it was a nice treat to watch movies at night. My boys are now Star Wars fanatics! The game room was also a great bonus. We had the privilege of meeting the owners before checking who are very nice and accommodating. We'd love to make it back. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Family and friends gathered at the aptly-named Riverside Retreat for a long weekend. We had a

fantabulous time. The home is beautifully appointed, well equipped, comfortable and inviting. The amenities are first rate. The kitchen is spacious and stocked with everything one needs for cooking. We ate all of our meals outside on the huge deck that provides a wonderful view of the river. The hot tub is delightful. We are already looking forward to our next stay!
