This unique location is becoming a hub for working professionals. You may never want to head into Downtown during your stay. If you are able to pull yourself away, the multiple transportation options for getting into the city make it a cinch!
The boat is in a protected part of the marina, but there can be some occasional movement during the day when boats pass by. At night the waters are very calm and some guests even find that a bit of gentle swaying relaxes them and makes for a very restful sleep. The houseboat is berthed on a brand new floating 5 foot wide wooden dock, so its just one step up onto the boat's deck at any tide. The docks are lighted and very stable The dock is connected to the parking lot by a long ramp with handrails; this ramp can be a bit steep at maximum low tide (twice a day), but there are built in treads for climbing. The ramp can be difficult at the lowest tidal points for folks with difficulty walking. The good part is that the tide does go in and out, so the majority of the time it is at a 30 degree angle or less. Its a safe first nautical experience for people of all ages who have never been on a boat before.
After a long day of touring the city there is nothing better than being dropped off at your boat by the water taxi, stepping onto the deck and relaxing on your own private sun deck with a cold drink in hand, listening to the soothing sounds of the ocean as you enjoy the views, sights and sounds of Boston Harbor!

Why Ryan/Deb chose Chelsea
These houseboats are a great way to enjoy being on the water without giving up conveniences of typical shore based lodging. With direct water and power this boat functions exactly like your home, but with a gentle rocking that reminds you that you are experiencing something truly unique.

Loved the little house boat .
Without a car getting around can be changeling at first . We ended up taking the bus to the subway most of the time . At home we never take the bus and have no subway ...so we were a bit nervous at first . Cab fares were very reasonable ....$8 to the airport : to downtown Boston $12-$14 . However , for us , the subway was like a ride at Disney Land .
There were just two of us and the size was just right .
Judy and Skip from Springfield Oregon .
There were only 2 of us and size wise the house boat was perfect .
You will absolutely love your stay!
These houseboats provide a great alternative to a high priced downtown hotel. Plenty of room for all to spread out an enjoy. There is a grilling platform out on the docks to enjoy for all guests. Very friendly owners throughout the marina are very helpful with tips and advice for things to see.
Parking is free, which is unheard of! Uber/Lyft/Taxi make the 10 minute trip into downtown quick and economical.
Unique Place to Spend a Couple Days
The kids enjoyed this unique place to spend the weekend. There were tons of jellyfish to watch, clams to see and a lobster pot to pull up and check. They liked the upper deck best, as well as noticing the change that came with the tides. We enjoyed talking to the permanent residents.
The space is small but efficient and generally works well. It was adequately clean and adequately stocked. The bedding was clean. The wifi was spotty at best and didn't really work.
Our boat had a good 7% list to one side since the septic system hadn't been emptied for some time. There was some issue with the contractor who was supposed to do it. Rock On tried to help by placing big drums of water on the other side, but we only got to a 4% list. The tilt was disconcerting.
As others have mentioned, there can be airplane landing noise at all times. During our stay, the planes were there for a short time one evening and then in spurts throughout the next day and night.
The small marina is in a working harbor. There is a drawbridge which is a lot of fun to watch, but there are loud horns announcing the lift. These horns go off at any time. Also, the cars driving across the open metal deck are quite loud.
We walked to the playground at the end of the street and the natural area across the street from the playground, where you can stand under planes just about to land. Mostly, we just hung out and relaxed.
"Andromeda" houseboat (1 of 3 they have) doesn't live up to glowing reviews
Beds are very comfortable, the houseboat is clean, and all accoutrements are pretty much as stated in the listing
Location: The Boston Bay Marina is directly in line with one of Logan's runways. While that runway is in use, planes taking off will pass roughly 1000 feet directly overhead every 5 to 10 minutes. This can start as early as 7:30 AM and be as late as 1:00 AM. During our time on the boat (just evenings and during the night), there were planes passing overhead nearly 30% of the time.
Water Taxi: The free water taxi is a "courtesy" service by appointment only, not a scheduled service to board at the next pick up time. It is only available when not too busy. You're out of luck during peak times. We only learned it was by appointment upon our arrival, and only learned about its full limitations when we first called for a pickup. As a result, the water taxi was no use to us and we had to drive into the city. The result was $98 in tolls and parking garage fees, as well as the added stress of navigating Boston’s streets and traffic.
Custodial duties: While clean with fresh linens and towels, we discovered a most unpleasant odor of septic gases in the bathroom. It wasn't inhabitable for more than a minute or two at a time. And the smell would spread throughout the houseboat. With temps in the high 80’s and very high humidity, opening windows was not a viable option. The smell was simply not tolerable. There has been no word of apology from the manager, nor has there been any contact with us to ask about our stay. We actually never saw or spoke with Ryan, the person described as the manager in the listing. A completely different gentleman was left in charge of the houseboat. Though addressed the next day, the first night was miserable. It should have been checked before our arrival.
Other annoyances: The dishes provided were not microwaveable. We had to stand on a chair to adjust the A/C. The two electrical outlets on either side of the sliding glass door do not work, yet the TV, DVD, and a lamp were plugged into them just the same. The window up in the loft had no blinds and faces east. Each evening we needed to haul the cushions from the sleep sofa into the far end of the loft and put them in front of the window, and each morning put them back on the sofa. One of the dining chairs was extremely lose and wobbly. Had we used it, it might have broken apart.
Rock on Rentals ROCK! Boston Marina Bay - it doesn't get better than this!
So we have finally unpacked all our bags and spent many hours regaling stories of Boston to our friends but the one thing that was the hit of the holiday from everybody concerned were the nights spent on the Lyra. Although my hubby and father in law are keen sailors, we have only ever stayed on water for day trips so I was slightly anxious about staying a whole weeks holiday but I shouldn't have been. The pictures of all your accommodations reflect exactly what they are, so there are no surprises on arrival. We loved the peace and quiet of the harbour, but with the hussle and bussle of Boston downtown only a water taxi ride away. The fact that it was free of charge was a bonus! The house boat was superb - clean, spacious, and fully equipped with everything you need. An added bonus was the bathroom is a proper bathroom with a fully working shower - lots of hot water too and plenty of pressure! There are two decks - lower and upper, all equipped with tables & chairs. Nearby, you can walk to the shop to pick up some groceries or a take away pizza, if you fancy sitting on the deck in the evening, watching the sun going down or even having the pleasure of waving at the boats go by.
Also Ryan, I cannot fail to mention the warm hospitality given to us by yourself. It was great to see a friendly face around, who always had 5 mins to chat and hear about our day (I know, we were early risers!) - the whole rental set up is a credit to you.
Thanks again, we have recommended you to all of our friends and if we are ever in Boston again, we will certainly spend time on your spot of paradise in Boston!
P.S. there's also free wi-fi (very important for any teen!) travelling!
Truly a Great Winter Option!!
The idea of renting a houseboat on Boston’s harbor in the winter raised a lot of eye brows. I spent two nights with my kids and their cousins (4 teenagers) and we all had a great time!
From it's the great location, comfort of the house boat's climate control, plenty of living accommodations, Wi-Fi (biggy for the teens), even the small entertainment center (TV & DVD player) and the water taxi service made the whole adventure a BLAST. When we had questions or needed help, the house manager was “Ryan” on the spot and quickly took care of business.
I made recommendations to others to check it and have a great time like we did. A trip the kids won’t forget and something we’ll definitely do again. Thanks!!
This houseboat is located in the up and coming East Boston Neighborhood of Boston. It is minutes away from the airport, and dozens of great restaurants and shops. There is a grocery store less than a half mile away, and a convenience store on the corner. As mentioned above, we offer a discounted water taxi service to the guests of our boats for $25/pp round trip (normally 35/pp round trip) into Rowes Wharf in Downtown Boston. Watch the drawbridge open from your roof deck as barges and tugboats pass by, supplying Boston and the Northeast with the needed commodities for commerce! While not as picturesque as other locations within Boston, this area is very safe and extremely quiet. The protected part of the harbor the boat is moored in rarely gets any wake or rough water from passing storms, in fact it is the location most boaters store their boats when inclement weather threatens. This location is perfect for anyone who wants to experience being on water but has a fear of sea sickness!
