About the property

Sweet 1-bedroom cottage immersed in nature and beauty on 20 acres w/ ocean views

Perched above a spring-fed babbling brook on 20 private landscaped acres, the Creekside Cottage offers the peace, serenity, privacy and nature that will melt away your stress. Nine miles (20 minutes) from downtown Hilo, on the lush and scenic Hamakua Coast with ocean views.

Perfect for a couple seeking a romantic getaway. Escape from the tourist traps and the hustle-bustle of city life, and relax in the vibrant natural environment of authentic Hawaii.

Enjoy your own private waterfall and the private swimming hole below it.

No city lights to dim the night sky: great star-gazing!

Utter peace and quiet - no traffic noise, no city sounds, no nearby neighbors.

Utter privacy: between you and the nearest road is a eucalyptus forest.

The cottage is ideally suited to two people. But in addition to the queen sized bed in the upstairs bedroom, there's an inflatable twin-sized bed in the living room that will sleep an additional person. You just plug it into the wall socket, turn it on, and in less than 2 minutes you have a comfortable airbed on 8 legs. And if you're traveling with small children, there are 2 child-sized foldout floor mattresses in the living room.

1 full bathroom plus 1 half-bath.

Fully equipped kitchen.

Screened-in lanai.

East Hawaii, the Hilo side, is the lush beautiful side of the Big Island. And the Creekside Cottage is perfectly located for the most convenient access to all the spectacular sights and adventures Hawaii is famous for. (The west or Kona side is barren desert, and a 2+ hour drive to any of the natural wonders.) All the waterfalls and river canyons the Big Island has to offer, are located along the Hamakua Coast, and the Creekside Cottage is in the midst of them - nestled in a beautiful river valley in the Hamakua Coast district. Stunning 400-ft Akaka Falls is located in the next river valley up the coast, 5 miles away. World-famous Waipio Falls, with a double 1,000-ft waterfall, is a little farther up the coast to the north. The most pristine snorkeling reefs and tide pools in the Pacific ocean are close by, on the easternmost point of the island. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - with the active volcano, fascinating lava tubes, and hundreds of miles of hiking trails - is less than an hour to the south. (If you were to stay on the other side of the island, in touristy Kona, you'd have to drive more than 2 hours to get to the Volcanoes Nat'l Park.)

Within 15 minutes of the Creekside Cottage are 3 beautiful botanical gardens and 2 thrilling zip lines. The owners have zip-lined in numerous parts of the world, including in Costa Rica where zip-lining was first invented, and we can testify that the zip line at Akaka Falls is one of the most thrilling in the world.

NOTE: Even though this property is only 9 miles from downtown Hilo, it's really very rural. This means there are no city lights or sounds, only the sounds of nature. But it also means no city water or gas or cable TV or telephone land line. The water supply is a rainwater catchment system, purified with filtration and UV light (perfectly safe - we've been drinking it for 7 years). The stove and water heater are fueled by propane: if you discover the stove won't light & the water won't heat it means the propane tank is empty, so you'll call the property manager and he'll come and switch from the empty propane tank to the full one. There is no cable TV available in this location, and satellite is not an option at the Creekside Cottage because it's bordered by a forest of tall trees that block the signal. The cottage does have a TV monitor and a Netflix-enabled DVD player, so if you have your own Netflix account you can download movies through the WiFi to the DVD player. And yes, there is WiFi: though there's no cable in the area, we do have satellite internet at the Kapehu house, and we've installed a wireless bridge to bounce the signal to the cottage. This slows the signal down, so if you require very high-speed internet while on vacation, you'd be better off renting a different place. There is no air conditioning. It doesn't get hot (at 900 feet elevation) but it's always humid, and if humidity is a problem for you, you may have to rent an air conditioned hotel room. Homes in Hawaii typically don't have air conditioning. There is also no heat in the cottage, but there are extra blankets for the occasional cool winter night.

About Tom and Marcy

We are 68 and 73, and this is intended to be our retirement home. Until then, we're making it available for others to enjoy. Most of the time we live in the Sandia Mountains in New Mexico, and we spend as much time as possible in Hawaii. Our property manager Nick lives near the Cottage - he will be the one to greet you when you arrive and make sure you have everything you need to feel at home during your stay.

Tom is a lawyer and law professor specializing in the needs of Native Americans and indigenous peoples. Marcy is a retired psychotherapist and a musician/songwriter and church music director. We're active outdoor adventurers and love wilderness backpacking.

Though the rental income on the Hawaii property doesn't cover all the expenses on it, it helps a lot - so we thank you for renting it and helping us make our retirement dream come true!

Why Tom and Marcy chose Pepeekeo

We've been visiting Hawaii 2 or 3 times a year for many years. The Big Island is our favorite island because it provides so much variety - from high mountain tops to snorkel reefs, to wilderness hikes, to the active volcano. On every vacation, we always spent a couple of days looking at real estate, until our broker was like family. When we first saw this property in Dec 2010, we were riveted by its beauty. When we stood gazing at the lush green valley and sparkling ocean, we both knew this was the place we'd been searching for.

What makes this house unique

Having spent most of our lives in the southwestern desert, to have two streams and our own private waterfall and private swimming hole is nothing short of heaven. And where else can we pick our own oranges, papayas, bananas, pineapples avocados to complement every meal? The serenity and peace, the openness of the landscape, the out-in-the-country feeling, are soothing to the heart and soul.

What's really unique about this property is it's ideal location. Even though it's only 15 or 20 minutes from downtown Hilo with all all the shops and restaurants and medical facilities, when you're at the Creekside Cottage you feel completely immersed in nature and beauty. And even though it's secluded, there's a wonderful spacious feeling to the wide open green valley.

Definitely Peaceful!!!

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is as described, a very peaceful, beautiful setting. The kitchen was well stocked. We had everything we needed. The internet is slow and absent at times, which was disclosed on the paperwork so I cannot fault the owners for that. I just want to make others aware of this fact if there is the need to work while on vacation. (Sad, but true some of us do.) I gave it a 4 out of 5 just because there are a couple things that show the wear of the house. Also, the washer and dryer are not located inside the house. One has to go outside and around the back to do laundry. However, these small details are not major issues. It is more about letting others know the full details. Would I stay here again?? Absolutely!

The perfect secluded getaway

  • 5 of 5

A very comfortable, cheerful place. Clean and beautiful and well-maintained with great views. Glad to have the washer/dryer for our wet swim suits. And the place is totally, totally private. It felt like being in the wilderness, yet the location is conveniently close to Hilo. During our visit, there were people staying in the other house on the property, the Kapehu house, but we never saw or heard them because there's a considerable distance between the two houses, not to mention plenty of foliage and a creek between them.

We were forewarned that East Hawaii is the rainy side of the island (that's why it's lush & green), and winter is the rainy season besides. But we had sunshine every day of our 2 week December stay. It did rain several times, but it cleared up in an hour and the sun returned. It rained really hard at night a couple of times, causing flash flood alerts to appear on our phones. But we found the sound of the rain on the roof at night to be a romantic plus.

The owner was very easy to communicate with and the property manager was instantly available when we had a question.

Our recommendations:

1. Stay at least a couple of weeks, because there is so much to do in East Hawaii. Two weeks there wasn't quite enough for us.

2. Visit the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens, less than 2 miles from the cottage. Awesome variety of tropical flowers from around the world. It will be at the top of our list when we return to Hawaii.

3. Snorkel at the Kapoho tide pools in Puna, but go on a weekday to beat the crowds. You'll see a wide variety of colorful fish and corals.

4. Hike the Kilauea Iki trail in HI Volcanoes Nat Park.

5. Check out the Waipio valley. The overlook sight is spectacular, but we then walked down the steep road to the beautiful beach below. On our way back up, we were offered a ride by a surfer in a 4wd truck.

5. Get some fresh-caught mahi mahi at the Suisan fish market in Hilo, and sear it lightly for your dinner. Fresh-caught ahi is excellent, too.

6. Whenyou visit the nearby Akaka Falls you'll go through the tiny town of Honomu. Stop in at Mr. Ed's bakery there for some unusual tasty treats.

We highly recommend East Hawai and the Creekside Cottage!

nice quiet accommodation

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I spent five beautiful days here in September 2017. The tranquility and seclusion is really very pleasant. In the house everything was as promised.

The housekeeper was on time for the handing over of the house and also very nice.

Therefore a recommended accommodation

Each morning it felt like I woke up in heaven

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful little house, beautifully maintained inside and out, gorgeous views. Peaceful, private. Wish we could have stayed forever. Owner was responsive and promptly answered our questions. Caretaker was thoughtful and seemed genuinely interested in us and making sure we had everything we needed. Perfect location. Couldn't ask for more. If we ever get back to Hawaii we'll come back here. Recommend it highly.

Serenity with a few drawbacks

  • 3 of 5

This property was amazing from a quiet, cozy and quaint point-of-view. Definitely very peaceful and the setting is jaw-dropping. The only reason I'm giving 3/5 for a review is there are some negatives we experienced. The biggest issue is the bed - comfort level is basically an army cot. I do not have a bad back at all but sleeping on this mattress threw out my neck and back so much I'm still recovering and it ruined that portion of the trip due to pain. Also the door did not lock from the inside (mechanism was clearly broken). I know the owner will say it's completely safe and no crime to worry about, but there should still be a functioning lock for peace of mind. Further we had next to no hot water. It ran out after about 15 minutes of use and even after waiting until the next day there was no additional hot water and we were stuck with ice cold showers. Finally the fridge was quite dirty with plenty of dead fruit flies, which made us avoid using the kitchen facilities altogether due to questioning the cleanliness.

Owner's Response: We pay our caretaker to be on call for our guests, but these guests never called on him. They preferred to suffer, and complain later. We tell all our guests, in advance in the printed check-in instructions: never hesitate to contact our caretaker should you need ANYTHING. He lives 7 minutes away and is ready to come and help at any time with anything. Then he tells them the same thing again, verbally and in person. So, (1) If these guests had called him and told him they were out of hot water, he would have come immediately to turn the switch from the empty propane tank to the full one, and they'd have had hot water immediately because it's an instant-on Paloma. (They could have even turned the switch themselves.) Their lack of hot water was due to their failure to mention it. (2) Our caretaker usually greets guests on their arrival and shows them the details they need to be aware of, but these people arrived in the middle of the night and let themselves in. They did not see the two locking mechanisms which lock the doors from the inside manually. Though our caretaker didn't meet them on their arrival, he stopped by the next day to ask if they needed anything, and they didn't mention the hot water, or ask how to lock the doors. If they had called him any time, he'd have come over and showed them the locks. (3) I'm very surprised that our housekeeper forgot to clean the fridge after the previous check-out. She's extremely meticulous and detail-oriented, and this is the first time she missed a spot that I know of. I will tell her about it. But again, if the guests had told the caretaker that the fridge hadn't been cleaned, he would have had the housekeeper come back immediately to clean it for them. Finally, we try so very hard to please everyone, that when other guests complained about the previous pillow-top mattress being too soft for someone with a back problem, we bought a new firm mattress, for over $1000. Now after this review from this fault-finding person, we've purchased a thick memory foam topper for the mattress, so it feels soft and cushy yet still provides support.

The perfect place for our honeymoon!

  • 5 of 5

Quietest, most peaceful place we've ever been to. Gorgeous grounds, beautifully maintained, great views, lovely cottage nicely decorated, great location close to all the sights. We'd recommend it to anyone who wants complete privacy surrounded by beauty in a convenient location!

We've been to this property before - our extended family rented the large Kapehu Retreat House nearby, and we fell in love with the property, so when we planned our honeymoon we knew this was where we wanted to stay. And we hope to come back again.
