Twillingate is a wonderfully charming island community located on Newfoundland's northeast coast, just at the entrance to Notre Dame Bay. It is one of Newfoundland's oldest seaports and during the 1800's was the most active and prosperous community in northeastern Newfoundland.

Iceberg Capital of the World

Known as the iceberg capital of the world, Twillingate is a prime spot for viewing giant icebergs between May and July each year. Daily boat tours will make this a close encounter and a photographer’s delight.

Islands Connected by Bridges

Twillingate is an island off the coast of Newfoundland off the coast of Canada. Today it is connected to Newfoundland by a series of bridges and causeways, creating one of the province’s most scenic routes. The town is about 100 kilometers north of Lewisporte and Gander.

From Cod Community to Tourism Town

This town of about 2,500 people once thrived on the cod fishery. Since the cod moratorium in 1992 tourism has become one of the main industries of Twillingate’s economy. A visit to this breathtaking spot will quickly confirm why: unspoiled hiking and walking trails, the famous summer Fish Fun and Folk Festival, concerts and theatre, picturesque coves, inlets, beaches, fishing flakes and stages, warm and friendly people and late summer and early fall berry picking all create a wonderful holiday experience.

Ancient Beothuk Roots

Archeological discoveries confirm that Twillingate and the region were home to the now extinct native Beothuk nation and relics can be viewed at the Twillingate Museum, the Beothuk Interpretation Centre and, if you know what to look for, along the beaches and coastline that was once home to the ancestors of Shawnadithit and Mary March.

Communities and Amenities

Twillingate include two municipalities, the Town of Twillingate and the Town of Crow Head. Twillingate has a fish plant, hospital, fire department, stadium, swimming pool, marine service centre, trailer park and campground, hardware store, clothing store, liquor store, winery, seniors home, two banks, schools, super markets, two pharmacies, three boat tours, garages, seven churches, hiking trails and several convenience stores.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2006

About the owner: In 2006 Deborah and Wilma bought a little house in Lower Jenkins Cove in Durrell Twillingate and set out to rebuild it in this quiet outport cove. With the help of drawings by architect Philip Pratt (also architect of The Rooms, the provincial museum, gallery and archives in St. John's) the little house was transformed into a modern coastal interior with a traditional saltbox house exterior. The plan was originally to create a vacation spot in the town where Deborah grew up. Soon it became clear that this property had to be shared with others. It was the beginning of a foray into tourism. Above the Tickle, a second vacation home, followed in 2009 and in 2011 they decided to go even bigger. They purchased and renovated the Anchor Inn Hotel in Twillingate which has since won provincial awards as Tourism Business of the Year and more recently Accommodator of the Year. It is based on a belief that visitors work for, plan and look forward to a trip and vacation in Twillingate and that it is their responsibility to provide this unique experience for guests. The Anchor Inn Hotel and Suites is also the location of Georgie's Restaurant, Captain's Pub and the Blue Barrel Gallery Cafe. Visitors to any of the properties are encouraged to visit any or all these facilities to make their stay even more memorable.

Why the Owner Chose Twillingate, NL, Canada:
Amber Retreat is true to its name. It is a true retreat in outport Newfoundland, set in a quiet cove at the start of the lovely Spiller's Cove trail and close to the edge of the water in scenic Durrell on Twillingate's south island. It is a place where small families, two couples of a small group of friends can unwind, laugh, relax and enjoy the salt air and coastal vistas.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Modern amenities in a private and quaintly quiet setting. Large outdoor decks and BBQ and lovely indoor-outdoor living space. Fully equipped kitchen for cooking and baking - pick the berries outside on the trails and cook homemade jam to take away... or make delicious partridgeberry muffins for breakfast. Only a 8 - 10 minute drive to the centre of town and 2 minutes from the nearest grocery store.
