tom humphrey purchased this cabin in 1999
Very relaxing & comfortable home with all-new appliances. Eagles, osprey, hummers, ducks, deer, and quail are regular visitors to this property depending on season. Beautiful sun-downs with exceptional views. There is no other property in the region that compares...natural beauty but with proximity to all of the amenities.
It is apparent that this house was designed by an architect who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright- many unique built-in features, a 65' wall of granite, with e-glass lofted 15' ceiling and wonderful natural light down middle of home. A wall of windows on lake-view side. A 36' dock with kayak rack (+2 kayaks) and mooring buoy is suitable for all kinds of boating activities.
This property has 2 houses on it. They are set obliquely to each other and have separate entries which D&K always use; their lower level walkway is not in a position to look into the main house. All of the extensive windows have mini-blinds which are easy to manipulate. Our long-term friends in the A-frame take care of the property year-round and are unobtrusive and helpful next door neighbors with good knowledge of the region regarding golf, hiking, wineries, etc. which most have found to be valuable. The lot has ~250ft of frontage with 1 acre of property and thus the houses have much more separation than many of the lakefront properties in the area which in many cases are 60'-80' frontage with 10' building set-backs from adjoining properties. There are no other structures nearby; the principle A-frame deck is on the opposite side of the main house and not visible from the main house. There is a pergola between the 2 houses that has adjacent flower gardens which are tended. The house is architecturally designed with ~60' of e-glass down the peak of the roof which extends a couple of feet into the upper bedroom. The house has beautiful and extensive views of the lake at it's greatest width. Nightly sundowns occur straight out from the deck. Sunrise happens every morning and is also glorious. The downstairs bedroom is much cooler but not dank and musty but can be darkened if desired. It also has multiple windows out to the lake. There are a few roly-poly's on occasion on the tile floors as we do not believe in using insecticides on the property; however they do not venture elsewhere and can easily be removed if offensive. Cobwebs do occur rather quickly on external walls even with regular maintenance. There are no carpets in the house so it is a very hygienic environment which is professionally cleaned each week. This is a very natural and beautiful setting which feels rather remote even though it is within a few kms of d/t Vernon. Osprey, eagles, deer, and california quail are frequent visitors, and even a rare coyote or bear have visited the property. The kokanee spawn right on our beach every fall. Most of our guests have truly enjoyed the setting at Scotch.
We booked Scotch on the Rocks based on the beautiful pics and description of the property. On arrival, we were immediately surprised to see an A-frame cottage which appears to be on the same property, and we were wondering if it was part of the property we had rented. However, it turns out the neighboring home, in which caretakers Karen and Dennis live, is within 30 feet of Scotch, with an adjoining walkway to patios. The proximity of the homes made privacy a big issue, though by no fault whatsoever of Karen and Dennis, who as described by others, are unobtrusive but helpful. We never once saw them using their front patio. However, the side patio with a garden belongs to them, and when they were tending it, we could see them through the large glass door that opens to the patio and has no blind or curtain to provide some privacy. There were no blinds on any of the large windows, which provide a beautiful view, but made us very aware of what we were wearing/not wearing at all times! Furthermore, we could hear them talking in their home, leading us to the natural conclusion that we could probably be heard as well. The location of this home provides an amazing view and solitude since it's close to the end of a dead end road, and would have been perfect if not for the above issues. The skylight overhead extended right into the upstairs bedroom, which also has a large overhead window with no blind, so if you're not an early riser, you will become one, as the morning light streams in at sunrise. Because of this, we moved downstairs after the first night, which as mentioned by another reviewer, was musty and dank. It's a walkout bedroom, but when I opened the door, it was full of cobwebs and bugs, who apparently appreciate the cool concrete patio it opens onto.
The house definitely has state of the art appliances and was built to afford the best view of the lake. We most enjoyed our time on the patio, which was well equipped with numerous stacking chairs, a dining table, one lounger, a modern propane fire pit, and there were folding adirondack chairs in the closet.
There were some other issues within the home that would be easily remedied, and I have chosen to email the owner privately with these concerns as I am quite certain they will remedy if made aware. However, we believed it was important that renters are aware that the neighbors appear to be on the same property, which may be fine for some but was not what we expected based on the photos.
We stayed at Scotch on the Rocks June 2016 for a week. We had a blast! The pictures do not do it justice. Beautiful place, amazing view of the Okanagan!
What a wonderful Vacay ... Great place for relaxing and entertaining ... Steps to the lake not good when raining, but when dry ... Perfectly fine;) We had relatives visit on 2 different occasions and were able to host with no problem ... We are very thankful for this place being dog friendly ... Both of our well behaved dogs had a lot of fun! The pictures of the inside do not do the place justice ... If u see them ... Just remember it's way better! I read the other reviews and any negative comments are really not justified in my opinion. We will be back! Also, the caretakers are very nice people;)
The property location and amenities are top notch. The property caretakers next door are very helpful; striking a balance between friendly and staying out of the guests' way.
The cottage is roomy but only 2 bedrooms, including one in the basement walk-out which is a bit musty.
Rates charged for this place, however, are very high (similar to top-end resorts).
Beautiful property, what you see is what you get! This part of Okanagan Lake is fairly quiet, but still close (15 min. drive) to Vernon and shops. Tom the owner was very responsive and helpful, no problems whatsoever with payment, etc. Also, Dennis and Karen the neighbours who live next door were delightful -- very hospitable and helpful, while also respecting our privacy. We rented a boat for a couple days, and enjoyed lots of time swimming off the dock or sitting on the patio watching the lake. We'll be back!
We rented this property for 8 days while visiting family in the Okanagan. Overall it was an excellent experience, good value for the cost, and we would highly recommended it.
The location is spectacular. We spent most early mornings and late evenings sitting on the patio looking out over the lake. Since we are from Ontario, the chance to sit out at dusk in July with no mosquitos was glorious.
The dock and waterfront were adeqhaate for keeping and lauching our canoe and motor launch. The brand new dock was easy to access either from the water or from our boats. The property came equipped with two high quality kayaks, paddles, lifejackets, and safety kits, and were were able to make good use of them.
The building it very attractive and fully equiped. The kitchen appliances are new and the utensils and cooking gear more than sufficient.
The beds were clean and comfortable, with clean bedding and towels provided.
The caretaking staff, who live next door, were exceptionally friendly and could not do enough to help us and make our stay as carefree as possible.
It is a short drive into the city of Vernon and food shopping and places for dinner out were quite adequate.
The steps down the the waterfronts - over 50 of them - are steep and rugged and may pose a problem for the elderly or those whose best days of fitness are well behind them. But otherwise they were not a problem.
This property is ideal for one or two couples, or a couple and one or two children (who would have to share a double bed). In our case, a couple and a grandson.
We encountered no hassles at all in making the reatal reservation and transacting payment. The listing description and photos accurately portrayed the property.
Overall, just a great place.
~3 kms north of Ellison Provincial Park and adjacent mountain biking park with a large variety of hiking & biking trails. Can hike to Crystal Springs or Predator GC in 1.5-2 hrs. Silver Star skiing ~ 30-40 minute drive. It is very pleasant to kayak down to Ellison and hike around/have lunch at a lakeside picnic table. Some good wine-tasting in the area including Gray Monk and 50th Parallel.
