Dirty, unkept property, with a rude difficult homeowner

  • 1 of 5

We have stayed at dozens of HomeAway properties all over the country and state of Michigan and have never had an experience like we did at this property! The pictures and reviews all looked great, but once we arrived we were very disappointed with the reality. The fridge was disgusting with old bologna and half drunk juices in it, moldy unrecognizable vegetables in the drawer, sticky, dirty shelves. The freezer was so disgusting, once my husband opened it we were even more grossed out than by the moldy food in the fridge. It was so bad we didn't even unpack our cooler. We were equally disappointed with the bathroom which had moldy bathmats, dirty uncleaned mirror, and a dingy shower curtain. Then when we explored the downstairs living room and bedroom, the mildew smell was overpowering, even after turning some fans on and opening windows for a while. The yard was unkept with litter strewn about and just little attention paid to the details, with old dirty rags and broken lawn funiture in the yard. After all of this we decided to leave after staying here after our first night. We were celebrating our anniversary and had to struggle to find a new property that was available for us on such short notice, but thankfully we found an adorable SPOTLESS property that we were very happy with. When we notified the owner the next morning and respectfully told him we were leaving due to the cleanliness of the house and asked if he would refund us our remaining nights stay, he spent the rest of the day arguing with us about how he always cleans it this way and to read all of his other positive reviews! We are still fighting with him to try and get any of the rest of our 4 nights stay money back and were EXTREMELY disappointed in him and this property! While it is a charming cabin tucked away in the woods (also note that parking is extremely difficult and limited!) all we really wanted and expected was for it to be cleaned properly! We have stayed in plenty of cabins up north and don't expect everything to be perfect, but clean and free of mildew is not too much to ask. Do yourself a favor and skip spending your money (that you'll never get back) on a property where the owner can't even meet the basic necessities. Not sure what experiences the other people with positive reviews had, but all I can speak to was ours and it was extremely poor.

Cozy, handcrafted cabin in the lush Michigan forest.

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is beautiful and was handmade by the owner, who we had a chance to meet and is very nice! It is exceptionally clean inside and is a perfect place to relax after a long day of activities. The cabin is secluded and surrounded by wildlife. It's a short walk/Drive to lake Michigan and an 8 minute drive to lovely Frankfort and Crystal lake. Bring your dog and enjoy it like we did! P.s. we luckily just had our dogs nails clipped but the floors and cabin are one of a kind and deserve proper etiquette to preserve them.

It was amazing

  • 5 of 5

We rented this for our honeymoon. It's tucked into the woods and out of the way of everything so you will enjoy peace and quiet. It's also very close to Elberta and Frankfort, less than 5 minutes. House is amazing. Clean and rustic. Would definitely rent this again

Beautiful place off the beaten path but close enough to everything

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay - the cottage is beautiful. The homeowner was very helpful as it is located a little off the main roadway. This cottage has great character and was perfect for our trip.
