Wonderful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect place to stay for a relaxing, no stress weekend! The area is so beautiful and my dog and I would explore the beautiful area and enjoy nature. She especially loved the deer! Everything was available for our use and the bed was super comfy! I never slept better! Thanks so much to James for sharing his home with us. We would love to return!

Haven in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed this little "tree house" in Northern Michigan. My husband, two daughters and I found it so relaxing to return to this retreat after our busy days of exploring the Benzie area. We were minutes from Frankfort, Crystal Lake and all the surrounding areas. My daughters slept in the little downstairs room and my husband and I were very comfortable in the upstairs loft. We had breakfast with deer as they roamed the property that looks out to a lovely meadow on one side. I would recommend this home to anyone who doesn't mind climbing a few stairs or the adorable club footed tub.

Secluded but close to everything

  • 5 of 5

The whole family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Dune Forst Retreat. The house is very unique, eclectic and clean. The three floors, each with unique spaces, makes the house seem bigger than it is. The kitchen is very open, the deck is nice and shaded. And it is a great area to hike, there are some houses in the area but is overall very private.

I recommend a stop at the Elberta beach, very quiet and beautiful. We also loved the sandwich/wine shop right in Elberta - they also rent bikes and kayaks, no need to drive into Frankfort unless headed there. We did not miss cable one bit with a good selection of movies and CDs to play, with classic toys for the kids.

James was great, he will greet you upon arrival and fill you in on everything bc the house is hard to find first time around.

Clean, beautiful home in the woods.

  • 4 of 5

Dune Forest Retreat is a beautiful home made with wood from the surrounding forest, and built by the owner. Architecturally, it's very unique and impressive with gorgeous woodwork and an open, airy feeling throughout. It's just a short drive to the lake and beach areas, and maybe 10-12 minutes into Frankfort/Crystal Lake areas. The owner obviously takes great pride in the home, and keeps it very clean. Other renters have mentioned the lack of privacy. The house itself is very private, nestled in the woods. Inside, though, you can hear everything in every room from everywhere. So when people talk about lack of privacy - they really mean that what happens in the bathroom or bedroom is available for the auditory pleasure of everyone else who happens to be in the house. No big deal for us, but for others, it might be a problem. ;-) Don't come to this house if you are looking for amenities like wi-fi, cable, or even a microwave - again, this was totally okay for us, but might not be okay for others, and actually, our cell phone signal was fairly strong in the house, which was kind of a pleasant surprise since we were coordinating with other family members in town. The shower situation is a little dicey with a rigged system in an old claw-foot tub. Worked okay and had plenty of hot water (which isn't always the case in these lake rentals), but if you're a bigger person, you might feel a little claustrophobic. There are lots of books, a few kids toys, a stereo/music collection, and so on. We also saw a fair number of big, black ants, which wasn't great but also seems kind of normal for a house made of wood in the middle of the forest. The price was great for a very pretty space and the two beds were comfortable. Overall, this was a lovely house for a very affordable rental price.

Beautiful and Quiet Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights. We loved the private and quiet setting, and the home was beautiful. James, the owner, met us there and showed us around the house. He was very nice and helpful. A perfect getaway for us! We enjoyed the nearby towns of Elberta and Frankfort. My husband did a little fishing. We rented bikes and biked along Crystal Lake. If you stay here expect no wifi or cable, and a very tiny tv with a nice little collection of DVDs, but when you want to get away from it all, this is the PERFECT place!!! :) We will definitely be coming back again.

Cottage was nice size and smelled great. Owner was friendly. Disappointing in that it was not as secluded as we expected. Refrigerator was half full of other peoples' food and closets had owner's clothes in them. We also expected a 10-15 minute walk to Lake Michigan but there was no direct access. The television did not work. We are used to renting places with a water view and really missed that.
