Stonewood on the New River

Follow a serene, mountain road with rolling pasture and grazing cattle to a tree-lined gravel street that meanders beside the New River. Nestled under mature trees in a second-home neighborhood on the river, this home will delight you. It boasts both the authentic interior of a log cabin and the contemporary pleasure of a great room with vaulted ceiling and light, lots of light.

A country kitchen greets you with seating for 4, a dishwasher, washer/dryer, ample kitchen utensils to prepare gourmet meals, and a butcher block as an extra work space. Hardwood floors and pine paneling lead you to the living room with a real-stone propane fireplace, comfortable seating for an evening by the fire, or a lazy bath in the downstairs, clawfoot tub. The owner is an artist and built a great room with three walls of glass, ample seating, quaint dining table, freestanding propane fireplace, trundle bed which pulls out to a king sleeper, sink and bar, and a sunny deck.

Decorated in antique-country chic, the home is a walk back in time, especially the inviting bedrooms on the second floor. Two bedrooms share the second full bath. One bedroom has a double bed, bunk beds, and a television for a cozy playroom and sleep space for the kids. The second, master bedroom has a double bed and private television.

If you can tear yourself away from the home, step outside and enjoy a river breeze on the sprawling front yard. Or tube, fish, or picnic on the riverfront lot, acquired by the cabin owner for their and your enjoyment, just a few steps away across the gravel road. Or warm yourself on a cool autumn evening at the fire pit. Or barbeque on the back deck with tables and seating for 8. Or swing in the shade or dine at the outdoor picnic table. Or settle in with a cup of coffee or glass of wine or a good book on the covered rocking chair porch with a gate to secure your pup. Or rinse off in the outdoor shower after a tough day of trout fishing.

The owners have also provided a “Things to See and Do” notebook with area attractions and local restaurant menus for when you want to venture out to the Jeffersons.

The possibilities are endless for mountain relaxation at Stonewood on the New River.

Nice Cabin!

Great location and cute neighborhood! Loved the sunroom, as it added much needed natural light. West Jefferson is a 20 min. drive (for groceries, etc).

Very nice property!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed staying at this property very much. The directions to get there were easy. There were lots of knick knacks around the place to look at and start conversations over. The only negative that I would say, along with the garbage disposal not working, we tried to run the dishwasher and it started leaking all over the floor so we had to stop it. Other than that, we had no issues.

Beautiful place but needs some updating

  • 2 of 5

Our initial take was that it was a gorgeous place and very spacious - upon nightfall as we headed to bed the master bed had a comforter that was very noisy almost remind you of a raincoat every time you made a move and the beds were not comfortable at all. Upon just pressing down on the twin beds you could instantly feel metal springs so that was definitely a no go. We debated sleeping in the chairs the second night as our daughter had claimed the daybed in the art room. Upon removing the linens from the beds we saw that one bed had something leaked or spilled down the side of it on both sides - not very appealing. When making breakfast I went to get a glass dish to bake in to discover it had some rodent remnants left behind in it. Loss of appetite to say the least. With some serious cleaning and new mattresses I belive this place could be awesome.

Nice place, not for small children.

  • 3 of 5

We really loved the cabin's location as it was secluded and quiet and an easy walk over to the river. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous. The cabin itself was nice, however it is full of small knickknacks everywhere which made it difficult with our nearly 2 year olds. Otherwise, it had a beautiful artist room with lots of windows and screen doors which we loved for the cool nights. The washer and dryer were handy as well as the vacuum and other little things you'd want for household convenience. My only wish is that the outside deck would have been somewhat cleaned before we went. There was a thick layer of pollen, webs, bird poop and dirt all over the furniture, benches and tables which took me forever to clean so that we could actually enjoy it.

My husband, daughter and I spent a wonderful week at the cabin. My son lives around the corner, so it was the perfect fit for us. Close to great hiking. we also rafted in the New River. I would definitely stay there again!

Owner's Response: Love to hear that our visitors have enjoyed their stay... and even better, that they have taken advantage of all this area has to offer including hiking, biking, canoeing and rafting on the historic New River. We are minutes away from many superb destinations including Appalachian State University, home of the Mountaineers where lots of great football games take place, tons of cultural activities, and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
